1 ¶ And afterward Moses and Aaron went in and told Pharaoh, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Let my people go that they may celebrate a feast unto me in the wilderness.

Moïse et Aaron se rendirent ensuite auprès de Pharaon, et lui dirent: Ainsi parle l'Éternel, le Dieu d'Israël: Laisse aller mon peuple, pour qu'il célèbre au désert une fête en mon honneur.

2 A nd Pharaoh said, Who is the LORD, that I should hearken to his voice to let Israel go? I do not know the LORD, neither will I let Israel go.

Pharaon répondit: Qui est l'Éternel, pour que j'obéisse à sa voix, en laissant aller Israël? Je ne connais point l'Éternel, et je ne laisserai point aller Israël.

3 ¶ And they said, The God of the Hebrews has found us; therefore we shall go three days’ journey into the desert and sacrifice unto the LORD our God lest he encounter us with pestilence or with the sword.

Ils dirent: Le Dieu des Hébreux nous est apparu. Permets-nous de faire trois journées de marche dans le désert, pour offrir des sacrifices à l'Éternel, afin qu'il ne nous frappe pas de la peste ou de l'épée.

4 T hen the king of Egypt said unto them, Why do ye, Moses and Aaron, keep the people from their works? Go unto your burdens.

Et le roi d'Égypte leur dit: Moïse et Aaron, pourquoi détournez-vous le peuple de son ouvrage? Allez à vos travaux.

5 P haraoh also said, Behold, the people of the land now are many, and ye make them cease from their burdens.

Pharaon dit: Voici, ce peuple est maintenant nombreux dans le pays, et vous lui feriez interrompre ses travaux!

6 A nd Pharaoh commanded the same day the taskmasters of the people and their officers, saying,

Et ce jour même, Pharaon donna cet ordre aux inspecteurs du peuple et aux commissaires:

7 Y e shall no longer give the people firewood to make brick as until now; let them go and gather firewood for themselves.

Vous ne donnerez plus comme auparavant de la paille au peuple pour faire des briques; qu'ils aillent eux-mêmes ramasser de la paille.

8 A nd the tally of the bricks which they made before, ye shall lay upon them; ye shall not diminish any of it; for they are idle; therefore they cry, saying, Let us go and sacrifice to our God.

Vous leur imposerez néanmoins la quantité de briques qu'ils faisaient auparavant, vous n'en retrancherez rien; car ce sont des paresseux; voilà pourquoi ils crient, en disant: Allons offrir des sacrifices à notre Dieu!

9 L et more work be laid upon them that they may occupy themselves with it; and let them not regard words of deception.

Que l'on charge de travail ces gens, qu'ils s'en occupent, et ils ne prendront plus garde à des paroles de mensonge.

10 ¶ And the taskmasters of the people went out, and their officers, and they spoke to the people, saying, Thus saith Pharaoh, I will not give you firewood.

Les inspecteurs du peuple et les commissaires vinrent dire au peuple: Ainsi parle Pharaon: Je ne vous donne plus de paille;

11 G o ye, gather firewood where ye can find it; yet none of your work shall be diminished.

allez vous-mêmes vous procurer de la paille où vous en trouverez, car l'on ne retranche rien de votre travail.

12 S o the people were scattered abroad throughout all the land of Egypt to gather brush for firewood.

Le peuple se répandit dans tout le pays d'Égypte, pour ramasser du chaume au lieu de paille.

13 A nd the taskmasters hasted them, saying, Fulfil your works, your daily quotas, as when there was firewood.

Les inspecteurs les pressaient, en disant: Achevez votre tâche, jour par jour, comme quand il y avait de la paille.

14 A nd the officers of the sons of Israel, whom Pharaoh’s taskmasters had set over them, were beaten, and they demanded, Why have ye not fulfilled your quotas in making brick both yesterday and today, as until now?

On battit même les commissaires des enfants d'Israël, établis sur eux par les inspecteurs de Pharaon: Pourquoi, disait-on, n'avez-vous pas achevé hier et aujourd'hui, comme auparavant, la quantité de briques qui vous avait été fixée?

15 ¶ Then the officers of the sons of Israel came and cried unto Pharaoh, saying, Why doest thou deal thus with thy slaves?

Les commissaires des enfants d'Israël allèrent se plaindre à Pharaon, et lui dirent: Pourquoi traites-tu ainsi tes serviteurs?

16 T here is no firewood given unto thy slaves, yet they say to us, Make brick. Behold, thy slaves are beaten; and thy people sin.

On ne donne point de paille à tes serviteurs, et l'on nous dit: Faites des briques! Et voici, tes serviteurs sont battus, comme si ton peuple était coupable.

17 A nd he replied, Ye are idle, ye are idle, therefore ye say, Let us go and sacrifice unto the LORD.

Pharaon répondit: Vous êtes des paresseux, des paresseux! Voilà pourquoi vous dites: Allons offrir des sacrifices à l'Éternel!

18 G o therefore now and work, for no firewood shall be given you, yet ye shall deliver the tally of bricks.

Maintenant, allez travailler; on ne vous donnera point de paille, et vous livrerez la même quantité de briques.

19 T hen the officers of the sons of Israel saw that they were afflicted after it was said, Ye shall not diminish any from the bricks of your daily quota.

Les commissaires des enfants d'Israël virent qu'on les rendait malheureux, en disant: Vous ne retrancherez rien de vos briques; chaque jour la tâche du jour.

20 A nd they met Moses and Aaron, who stood in the way, as they came forth from Pharaoh;

En sortant de chez Pharaon, ils rencontrèrent Moïse et Aaron qui les attendaient.

21 a nd they said unto them, The LORD look upon you and judge because ye have made our savour to be a stench before Pharaoh and his slaves, putting a sword in their hands to slay us.

Ils leur dirent: Que l'Éternel vous regarde, et qu'il juge! Vous nous avez rendus odieux à Pharaon et à ses serviteurs, vous avez mis une épée dans leurs mains pour nous faire périr.

22 T hen Moses returned unto the LORD and said, Lord, why hast thou so afflicted this people? Why is it that thou hast sent me?

Moïse retourna vers l'Éternel, et dit: Seigneur, pourquoi as-tu fait du mal à ce peuple? pourquoi m'as-tu envoyé?

23 F or since I came to Pharaoh to speak in thy name, he has afflicted this people; neither hast thou delivered thy people at all.

Depuis que je suis allé vers Pharaon pour parler en ton nom, il fait du mal à ce peuple, et tu n'as point délivré ton peuple.
