1 ¶ O LORD, thou hast searched me and known me.

Au chef des chantres. De David. Psaume. Éternel! tu me sondes et tu me connais,

2 T hou knowest my sitting down and my rising up, thou dost understand my thoughts from afar.

Tu sais quand je m'assieds et quand je me lève, Tu pénètres de loin ma pensée;

3 T hou hast girded my walk and my rest, and hast prepared all my ways.

Tu sais quand je marche et quand je me couche, Et tu pénètres toutes mes voies.

4 F or the word is not even upon my tongue, and, behold, O LORD, thou dost know it altogether.

Car la parole n'est pas sur ma langue, Que déjà, ô Éternel! tu la connais entièrement.

5 T hou hast formed my face and my insides and laid thine hand upon me.

Tu m'entoures par derrière et par devant, Et tu mets ta main sur moi.

6 T hy knowledge is wonderful beyond my ability to comprehend; it is high, I cannot understand it.

Une science aussi merveilleuse est au-dessus de ma portée, Elle est trop élevée pour que je puisse la saisir.

7 ¶ Where shall I go from thy spirit? or where shall I flee from thy presence?

Où irais-je loin de ton esprit, Et où fuirais-je loin de ta face?

8 I f I ascend to the heavens, thou art there: if I make my bed in Sheol, behold, thou art there.

Si je monte aux cieux, tu y es; Si je me couche au séjour des morts, t'y voilà.

9 I f I take the wings of the dawn and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,

Si je prends les ailes de l'aurore, Et que j'aille habiter à l'extrémité de la mer,

10 e ven there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me.

Là aussi ta main me conduira, Et ta droite me saisira.

11 I f I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall shine because of me.

Si je dis: Au moins les ténèbres me couvriront, La nuit devient lumière autour de moi;

12 E ven the darkness does not hide from thee; but the night shines as the day; the darkness is as the light.

Même les ténèbres ne sont pas obscures pour toi, La nuit brille comme le jour, Et les ténèbres comme la lumière.

13 F or thou hast possessed my kidneys: thou hast covered me in my mother’s womb.

C'est toi qui as formé mes reins, Qui m'as tissé dans le sein de ma mère.

14 I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; marvellous are thy works, and that, my soul knows right well.

Je te loue de ce que je suis une créature si merveilleuse. Tes oeuvres sont admirables, Et mon âme le reconnaît bien.

15 M y body was not hid from thee, even though I was made in secret and brought together in the lowest parts of the earth.

Mon corps n'était point caché devant toi, Lorsque j'ai été fait dans un lieu secret, Tissé dans les profondeurs de la terre.

16 T hine eyes did see my substance yet being imperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which were then formed, without lacking one of them.

Quand je n'étais qu'une masse informe, tes yeux me voyaient; Et sur ton livre étaient tous inscrits Les jours qui m'étaient destinés, Avant qu'aucun d'eux existât.

17 ¶ Therefore, how precious are thy thoughts unto me, O God! How great is the sum of them!

Que tes pensées, ô Dieu, me semblent impénétrables! Que le nombre en est grand!

18 I f I should count them, they are more in number than the sand; when I awake, I am still with thee.

Si je les compte, elles sont plus nombreuses que les grains de sable. Je m'éveille, et je suis encore avec toi.

19 S urely thou wilt slay the wicked, O God; depart from me therefore, ye bloodthirsty men.

O Dieu, puisses-tu faire mourir le méchant! Hommes de sang, éloignez-vous de moi!

20 F or they speak against thee wickedly, and thine enemies take thy name in vain.

Ils parlent de toi d'une manière criminelle, Ils prennent ton nom pour mentir, eux, tes ennemis!

21 D o I not hate all those, O LORD, that hate thee? and am not I grieved with those that rise up against thee?

Éternel, n'aurais-je pas de la haine pour ceux qui te haïssent, Du dégoût pour ceux qui s'élèvent contre toi?

22 I hate them with perfect hatred; I count them mine enemies.

Je les hais d'une parfaite haine; Ils sont pour moi des ennemis.

23 S earch me, O God, and know my heart; try me and know my thoughts

Sonde-moi, ô Dieu, et connais mon coeur! Éprouve-moi, et connais mes pensées!

24 a nd see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way eternal.

Regarde si je suis sur une mauvaise voie, Et conduis-moi sur la voie de l'éternité!
