1 ¶ My son, attend unto my wisdom, and bow thine ear to my intelligence;

Mon fils, sois attentif à ma sagesse, Prête l'oreille à mon intelligence,

2 t hat thou may keep council and that thy lips may conserve knowledge.

Afin que tu conserves la réflexion, Et que tes lèvres gardent la connaissance.

3 F or the lips of the strange woman drop as a honeycomb, and her mouth is smoother than oil,

Car les lèvres de l'étrangère distillent le miel, Et son palais est plus doux que l'huile;

4 B ut her end is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a twoedged sword.

Mais à la fin elle est amère comme l'absinthe, Aiguë comme un glaive à deux tranchants.

5 H er feet go down to death, her steps uphold Sheol,

Ses pieds descendent vers la mort, Ses pas atteignent le séjour des morts.

6 l est thou should ponder the path of life, her ways are unstable; thou shalt not know them.

Afin de ne pas considérer le chemin de la vie, Elle est errante dans ses voies, elle ne sait où elle va.

7 H ear me now therefore, O ye sons, and do not depart from the words of my mouth.

Et maintenant, mes fils, écoutez-moi, Et ne vous écartez pas des paroles de ma bouche.

8 R emove thy way far from her, and do not come near the door of her house,

Éloigne-toi du chemin qui conduit chez elle, Et ne t'approche pas de la porte de sa maison,

9 l est thou give thine honour unto others and thy years unto the cruel,

De peur que tu ne livres ta vigueur à d'autres, Et tes années à un homme cruel;

10 l est strangers be filled with thy wealth, and thy labours be in the house of a stranger,

De peur que des étrangers ne se rassasient de ton bien, Et du produit de ton travail dans la maison d'autrui;

11 a nd thou mourn at the last when thy flesh and thy body are consumed

De peur que tu ne gémisses, près de ta fin, Quand ta chair et ton corps se consumeront,

12 a nd say, How have I hated chastening and my heart despised reproof

Et que tu ne dises: Comment donc ai-je pu haïr la correction, Et comment mon coeur a-t-il dédaigné la réprimande?

13 a nd have not obeyed the voice of those who chastened me, nor inclined my ear to those that instructed me!

Comment ai-je pu ne pas écouter la voix de mes maîtres, Ne pas prêter l'oreille à ceux qui m'instruisaient?

14 I have been in almost every kind of evil, in the midst of society and of the congregation.

Peu s'en est fallu que je n'aie éprouvé tous les malheurs Au milieu du peuple et de l'assemblée.

15 ¶ Drink waters out of thine own cistern and running waters out of thine own well.

Bois les eaux de ta citerne, Les eaux qui sortent de ton puits.

16 L et thy fountains be dispersed abroad, and rivers of thy waters in the streets.

Tes sources doivent-elles se répandre au dehors? Tes ruisseaux doivent ils couler sur les places publiques?

17 L et them be only thine own and not for strangers with thee.

Qu'ils soient pour toi seul, Et non pour des étrangers avec toi.

18 T hy fountain shall be blessed; and rejoice with the wife of thy youth.

Que ta source soit bénie, Et fais ta joie de la femme de ta jeunesse,

19 L et her be as the loving hind and pleasant roe; let her breasts satisfy thee at all times; and be thou ravished always with her love, without eyes for anyone else.

Biche des amours, gazelle pleine de grâce: Sois en tout temps enivré de ses charmes, Sans cesse épris de son amour.

20 A nd why wilt thou, my son, be ravished with a woman belonging to someone else, and embrace the bosom of a stranger?

Et pourquoi, mon fils, serais-tu épris d'une étrangère, Et embrasserais-tu le sein d'une inconnue?

21 F or the ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD, and he weighs all his goings.

Car les voies de l'homme sont devant les yeux de l'Éternel, Qui observe tous ses sentiers.

22 H is own iniquities shall take hold of the wicked, and he shall be imprisoned with the cords of his sins.

Le méchant est pris dans ses propres iniquités, Il est saisi par les liens de son péché.

23 H e shall die because he did not submit to chastening; and due to the greatness of his folly he shall go astray.

Il mourra faute d'instruction, Il chancellera par l'excès de sa folie.
