1 ¶ My son, attend unto my wisdom, and bow thine ear to my intelligence;

Figlio mio, fa' attenzione alla mia sapienza, porgi l'orecchio al mio intendimento

2 t hat thou may keep council and that thy lips may conserve knowledge.

affinché tu custodisca la riflessione e le tue labbra ritengano la conoscenza.

3 F or the lips of the strange woman drop as a honeycomb, and her mouth is smoother than oil,

Poiché le labbra della donna adultera stillano miele e la sua bocca è piú morbida dell'olio;

4 B ut her end is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a twoedged sword.

ma alla fine ella è amara come l'assenzio, tagliente come una spada a due tagli.

5 H er feet go down to death, her steps uphold Sheol,

I suoi piedi scendono alla morte, i suoi passi portano direttamente allo Sceol.

6 l est thou should ponder the path of life, her ways are unstable; thou shalt not know them.

Essa non cammina sul sentiero della vita, ma tu non dai peso alla cosa, le sue vie sono erranti, ma tu non ti rendi conto.

7 H ear me now therefore, O ye sons, and do not depart from the words of my mouth.

Perciò ora, figli miei, ascoltatemi e non allontanatevi dalle parole della mia bocca.

8 R emove thy way far from her, and do not come near the door of her house,

Tieni lontana da lei la tua via, e non avvicinarti alla porta della sua casa

9 l est thou give thine honour unto others and thy years unto the cruel,

per non dare ad altri il tuo vigore, e i tuoi anni a uno senza pietà.

10 l est strangers be filled with thy wealth, and thy labours be in the house of a stranger,

Perché gli estranei non si sazino dei tuoi beni, e le tue fatiche non vadano in casa di uno straniero,

11 a nd thou mourn at the last when thy flesh and thy body are consumed

e non gema quando verrà la tua fine, quando la tua carne e il tuo corpo saranno consumati,

12 a nd say, How have I hated chastening and my heart despised reproof

e debba dire: «Come mai ho odiato l'ammaestramento, e il mio cuore ha disprezzato la correzione?

13 a nd have not obeyed the voice of those who chastened me, nor inclined my ear to those that instructed me!

Non ho ascoltato la voce di quelli che mi ammaestravano e non ho prestato orecchio a quelli che mi insegnavano.

14 I have been in almost every kind of evil, in the midst of society and of the congregation.

Mi sono trovato quasi nel male totale in mezzo alla folla e all'assemblea».

15 ¶ Drink waters out of thine own cistern and running waters out of thine own well.

Bevi l'acqua della tua cisterna e l'acqua corrente del tuo pozzo.

16 L et thy fountains be dispersed abroad, and rivers of thy waters in the streets.

Dovrebbero le tue fonti spargersi al di fuori, come ruscelli d'acqua per le strade?

17 L et them be only thine own and not for strangers with thee.

Siano per te solo e non per gli estranei insieme a te.

18 T hy fountain shall be blessed; and rejoice with the wife of thy youth.

Sia benedetta la tua fonte e rallegrati con la sposa della tua gioventú.

19 L et her be as the loving hind and pleasant roe; let her breasts satisfy thee at all times; and be thou ravished always with her love, without eyes for anyone else.

Cerva amabile e gazzella graziosa, le sue mammelle ti soddisfino in ogni tempo, e sii continuamente rapito nel suo amore.

20 A nd why wilt thou, my son, be ravished with a woman belonging to someone else, and embrace the bosom of a stranger?

Perché mai, figlio mio, invaghirti di una donna adultera e abbracciare il seno di un'estranea?

21 F or the ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD, and he weighs all his goings.

Poiché le vie dell'uomo stanno davanti agli occhi dell'Eterno, ed egli scruta tutti i suoi sentieri.

22 H is own iniquities shall take hold of the wicked, and he shall be imprisoned with the cords of his sins.

L'empio è preso nelle sue stesse iniquità e trattenuto dalle funi del suo peccato.

23 H e shall die because he did not submit to chastening; and due to the greatness of his folly he shall go astray.

Egli morrà per mancanza di correzione e perirà per la grandezza della sua follia.
