1 ¶ By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, yea, we wept, when we remembered Zion.

Là, presso i fiumi di Babilonia, sedevamo e piangevamo, ricordandoci di Sion;

2 W e hanged our harps upon the willows in the midst thereof;

sui salici di quella terra avevamo appese le nostre cetre.

3 w hen there, those that carried us away captive asked us for the words of the song; with our harps of joy hung upon the willows saying, Sing us one of the songs of Zion.

Là, quelli che ci avevano condotti in cattività ci chiedevano le parole di un canto, sí, quelli che ci opprimevano chiedevano canti di gioia, dicendo: «Cantateci un canto di Sion».

4 H ow shall we sing the song of the LORD in the land of strangers?

Come avremmo potuto cantare i canti dell'Eterno in un paese straniero?

5 I f I forget thee, O Jerusalem, my right hand shall be forgotten.

Se mi dimentico di te, o Gerusalemme, dimentichi la mia destra ogni abilità;

6 I f I do not remember thee, my tongue shall cleave to the roof of my mouth; if I do not prefer to lift up Jerusalem as my chief joy.

resti la mia lingua attaccata al palato, se non mi ricordo di te, se non metto Gerusalemme al di sopra della mia piú grande gioia.

7 ¶ Remember, O LORD, the sons of Edom in the day of Jerusalem; who said, Raze it, raze it, even to the foundation thereof.

Ricordati, o Eterno, dei figli di Edom, che nel giorno di Gerusalemme dicevano: «Demolitela, demolitela fin dalle fondamenta».

8 O daughter of Babylon, who art to be destroyed; happy shall he be, that rewards thee as thou hast served us.

O figlia di Babilonia, che devi esser distrutta beato chi ti darà la retribuzione del male che ci hai fatto!

9 H appy shall he be, that takes and dashes thy offspring against the stones.

Beato chi prende i tuoi bambini e li sbatte contro la roccia!
