1 ¶ O LORD God, to whom vengeance belongs; O God, to whom vengeance belongs, show thyself.

O DIO delle vendette, o Eterno DIO delle vendette, risplendi.

2 L ift up thyself, thou judge of the earth: render a reward to the proud.

Levati, o giudice della terra e rendi la retribuzione ai superbi.

3 L ORD, how long shall the wicked, how long shall the wicked triumph?

Fino a quando gli empi, o Eterno, fino a quando gli empi trionferanno?

4 H ow long shall they utter and speak hard things? and all the workers of iniquity boast themselves?

Vomitano parole e fanno discorsi insolenti; tutti gli operatori d'iniquità parlano con arroganza.

5 T hey break in pieces thy people, O LORD, and afflict thy heritage.

Essi calpestano il tuo popolo, o Eterno, e opprimono la tua eredità.

6 T hey slay the widow and the stranger and murder the fatherless.

Uccidono la vedova e il forestiero, e mettono a morte gli orfani,

7 Y et they say, JAH shall not see, neither shall the God of Jacob regard it.

e dicono: «L'Eterno non vede, il DIO di Giacobbe non intende».

8 U nderstand, ye carnal ones among the people, and, ye fools, when will ye be wise?

Cercate di capire, o insensati fra il popolo, e voi sciocchi, quando diventerete savi

9 H e that planted the ear, shall he not hear? he that formed the eye, shall he not see?

Colui che ha piantato l'orecchio, non ode egli? Colui che ha formato l'occhio, non vede egli?

10 H e that chastens the Gentiles, shall he not correct? he that teaches man knowledge, shall not he know?

Colui che corregge le nazioni non le punirà, lui che insegna all'uomo conoscenza?

11 T he LORD knows the thoughts of man, that they are vanity.

L'Eterno conosce i pensieri dell'uomo e sa che sono vani.

12 ¶ Blessed is the man whom thou dost chasten, O JAH, and teach him out of thy law,

Beato l'uomo che tu correggi, o Eterno, e che istruisci con la tua legge,

13 t o cause him to rest in the days of adversity, until the pit is dug for the wicked.

per dargli riposo nei giorni dell'avversità, finché è scavata la fossa per l'empio.

14 F or the LORD will not cast off his people, neither will he forsake his inheritance.

Poiché l'Eterno non ripudierà il suo popolo e non abbandonerà la sua eredità.

15 B ut the judgment shall be returned unto righteousness, and all the upright in heart shall follow it.

Il giudizio sarà di nuovo fondato sulla giustizia, e tutti i retti di cuore lo seguiranno.

16 W ho will rise up for me against the evildoers? or who will stand up for me against the workers of iniquity?

Chi si leverà per me contro i malvagi? Chi si metterà dalla mia parte contro gli operatori d'iniquità?

17 U nless the LORD had been my help, my soul would have quickly dwelt with the dead.

Se l'Eterno non fosse venuto in mio aiuto, sarei presto finito nel luogo del silenzio.

18 W hen I said, My foot slips, thy mercy, O LORD, held me up.

Quando ho detto «Il mio piede vacilla», la tua benignità, o Eterno, mi ha sostenuto.

19 I n the multitude of my thoughts within me, thy comforts delight my soul.

Quando un gran numero di preoccupazioni mi assillavano, le tue consolazioni mi rincuoravano.

20 S hall the throne of iniquity have fellowship with thee, who creates toil under the guise of law?

Sarà forse tuo alleato il tribunale iniquo, che trama angherie in nome della legge?

21 T hey gather themselves together as an army against the life of the righteous and condemn the innocent blood.

Si radunano assieme contro il giusto e condannano il sangue innocente.

22 B ut the LORD is my refuge, and my God is the rock of my trust.

Ma l'Eterno è la mia fortezza e il mio DIO è la rocca in cui mi rifugio.

23 A nd he shall bring upon them their own iniquity and shall cut them off in their own wickedness; yea, the LORD our God shall cut them off.

Egli farà ricadere su di essi la loro malvagità e li farà perire per la loro iniquità; l'Eterno, il nostro DIO, li distruggerà.
