1 ¶ Now the feast of unleavened bread drew near, which is called the Passover.

Si avvicinava intanto la festa degli Azzimi, detta Pasqua.

2 A nd the princes of the priests and scribes sought how they might kill him, but they feared the people.

Ed i capi dei sacerdoti e gli scribi cercavano come farlo morire, poiché temevano il popolo.

3 T hen Satan entered into Judas surnamed Iscariot, being of the number of the twelve.

Or Satana entrò in Giuda, soprannominato Iscariota, che era nel numero dei dodici.

4 A nd he went and spoke with the princes of the priests and captains, how he might betray him unto them.

Cosí egli andò ad accordarsi con i capi dei sacerdoti e con i magistrati sul come tradirlo.

5 A nd they were glad and covenanted to give him money.

Ed essi se ne rallegrarono e convennero di dargli del denaro.

6 A nd he promised and sought opportunity to betray him unto them in the absence of the multitude.

Ed egli acconsentí, e cercava l'opportunità di consegnarlo nelle loro mani di nascosto dalla folla.

7 ¶ Then came the day of unleavened bread, when the passover lamb must be killed.

Or venne il giorno degli Azzimi, nel quale si doveva sacrificare la Pasqua.

8 A nd he sent Peter and John, saying, Go and prepare us the passover lamb that we may eat.

E Gesú mandò Pietro e Giovanni, dicendo: «Andate e preparate la Pasqua per noi, affinché la possiamo mangiare».

9 A nd they said unto him, Where wilt thou that we prepare?

Ed essi gli dissero: «Dove vuoi che la prepariamo?».

10 A nd he said unto them, Behold, when ye are entered into the city, there ye shall find a man bearing a pitcher of water; follow him into the house where he enters in.

Allora egli disse loro: «Ecco, quando entrerete in città, vi verrà incontro un uomo che porta una brocca d'acqua; seguitelo nella casa dove entrerà.

11 A nd ye shall say unto the husband of the house, The Master saith unto thee, Where is the guestchamber where I shall eat the passover lamb with my disciples?

Dite quindi al padrone di casa: "Il Maestro ti manda a dire: Dov'è la sala, nella quale posso mangiare la Pasqua con i miei discepoli?"

12 A nd he shall show you a large upper room furnished; there make ready.

Allora egli vi mostrerà una grande sala arredata; là preparerete la Pasqua».

13 A nd they went and found as he had said unto them; and they made ready the passover lamb.

Andati dunque, essi trovarono come aveva loro detto e prepararono la Pasqua.

14 A nd when the hour was come, he sat down at the table, and the twelve apostles with him.

E, quando giunse l'ora, egli si mise a tavola e i dodici apostoli con lui.

15 A nd he said unto them, With desire I have greatly desired to eat this passover lamb with you before I suffer;

Allora egli disse loro: «Ho grandemente desiderato di mangiare questa Pasqua con voi prima di soffrire,

16 f or I say unto you, I will not eat any more thereof until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.

poiché io vi dico che non ne mangerò piú finché abbia il suo compimento nel regno di Dio».

17 A nd taking the cup, having given thanks, he said, Take this, and divide it among yourselves,

Poi prese il calice, rese grazie e disse: «Prendete questo e dividetelo fra di voi,

18 f or I say unto you, I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God shall come.

perché io vi dico che non berrò piú del frutto della vigna, finché il regno di Dio sia venuto».

19 A nd taking bread, having given thanks, he broke it and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me.

Poi, preso il pane, rese grazie, lo spezzò e lo diede loro dicendo: «Questo è il mio corpo, che è dato per voi; fate questo in memoria di me»

20 L ikewise also he took and gave them the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.

Cosí pure, dopo aver cenato, prese il calice dicendo: «Questo calice è il nuovo patto nel mio sangue, che è sparso per voi.

21 ¶ But with all this, behold, the hand of him that betrays me is with me on the table.

Ma ecco, la mano di colui che mi tradisce è sulla tavola con me.

22 A nd truly the Son of man goes as it was determined; but woe unto that man by whom he is betrayed!

Certamente il Figlio dell'uomo se ne va, come è stabilito, ma guai a quell'uomo per mezzo del quale è tradito!».

23 A nd they began to enquire among themselves, which of them it was that should do this thing.

Allora essi cominciarono a domandarsi l'un l'altro, chi di loro avrebbe fatto questo.

24 A nd there was also a contention among them, which of them should be accounted the greatest.

E tra di loro sorse anche una contesa, intorno a chi di loro doveva essere considerato il maggiore.

25 T hen he said unto them, The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those that exercise authority upon them are called well-doers.

Ma Gesú disse loro: «I re delle nazioni le signoreggiano, e coloro che esercitano autorità su di esse sono chiamati benefattori.

26 B ut ye shall not be so, but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is prince, as he that doth serve.

Ma con voi non sia cosí; anzi il piú grande fra di voi sia come il minore e chi governa come colui che serve.

27 F or who is greater, he that sits at the table or he that serves? Is it not he that sits at the table? But I am among you as he that serves.

Chi è infatti piú grande chi siede a tavola, o colui che serve? Non è forse colui che siede a tavola? Eppure io sono in mezzo a voi come colui che serve.

28 B ut ye are those who have continued with me in my temptations.

Or voi siete quelli che siete rimasti con me nelle mie prove.

29 A nd I appoint unto you a kingdom as my Father has appointed unto me;

Ed io vi assegno il regno, come il Padre mio lo ha assegnato a me,

30 t hat ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

affinché mangiate e beviate alla mia tavola nel mio regno e sediate su troni per giudicare le dodici tribú d'Israele.

31 A nd the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has desired to have you that he may sift you as wheat;

Il Signore disse ancora: «Simone, Simone, ecco, Satana ha chiesto di vagliarvi come si vaglia il grano.

32 b ut I have prayed for thee that thy faith fail not; and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.

Ma io ho pregato per te, affinché la tua fede non venga meno; e tu, quando sarai ritornato, conferma i tuoi fratelli».

33 A nd he said unto him, Lord, I am ready to go with thee, both into prison and to death.

Ma egli disse: «Signore, io sono pronto ad andare con te tanto in prigione che alla morte».

34 A nd he said, I tell thee, Peter, thou shalt deny three times that thou knowest me before the cock shall crow this day.

Ma Gesú disse: «Pietro, io ti dico che oggi il gallo non canterà, prima che tu abbia negato tre volte di conoscermi».

35 A nd he said unto them, When I sent you without purse and provision bag and shoes, lacked ye anything? And they said, Nothing.

Poi disse loro: «Quando vi mandai senza borsa, senza sacca e senza sandali, vi è forse mancata qualche cosa?». Ed essi dissero: «Nessuna».

36 T hen he said unto them, But now, he that has a purse, let him take it and likewise his provision bag; and he that has no sword, let him sell his garment and buy one.

Disse loro dunque: «Ma ora chi ha una borsa la prenda con sé, e cosí pure una sacca; e chi non ha la spada venda la sua veste e ne compri una.

37 F or I say unto you that this that is written must yet be accomplished in me, And he was reckoned among the transgressors; for the things written concerning me have a fulfillment.

Poiché io vi dico che ciò che è scritto deve ancora essere adempiuto in me: "Ed egli è stato annoverato fra i malfattori" Le cose infatti che sono scritte di me hanno il loro compimento».

38 T hen they said, Lord, behold, here are two swords. And he said unto them, It is enough.

Allora essi dissero: «Signore, ecco qui due spade». Ma egli disse loro: «Basta!».

39 ¶ And he came out and went as he was wont to the mount of Olives, and his disciples also followed him.

Poi, uscito, andò come al solito al monte degli ulivi, e anche i suoi discepoli lo seguirono.

40 A nd when he was at the place, he said unto them, Pray that ye enter not into temptation.

Giunto sul posto, disse loro: «Pregate per non entrare in tentazione»

41 A nd he withdrew from them about a stone’s cast and kneeled down and prayed,

E si allontanò da loro, circa un tiro di sasso e, postosi in ginocchio, pregava,

42 s aying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me; nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.

dicendo: «Padre, se vuoi, allontana da me questo calice! Tuttavia non sia fatta la mia volontà, ma la tua».

43 A nd there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him.

Allora gli apparve un angelo dal cielo per dargli forza.

44 A nd being in agony, he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.

Ed egli, essendo in agonia, pregava ancor piú intensamente, e il suo sudore divenne simile a grumi di sangue che cadevano a terra.

45 A nd when he rose up from prayer and was come to his disciples, he found them sleeping for sorrow

Alzatosi poi dalla preghiera, venne dai suoi discepoli e li trovò che dormivano per la tristezza

46 a nd said unto them, Why sleep ye? rise and pray, lest ye enter into temptation.

e disse loro: «Perché dormite? Alzatevi e pregate per non entrare in tentazione».

47 ¶ And while he yet spoke, behold a multitude, and he that was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them and drew near unto Jesus to kiss him.

Mentre egli parlava ancora, ecco una turba; or colui che si chiamava Giuda uno dei dodici, li precedeva e si accostò a Gesú per baciarlo.

48 B ut Jesus said unto him, Judas, betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss?

E Gesú gli disse: «Giuda, tradisci il Figlio dell'uomo con un bacio?».

49 W hen those who were about him saw what would follow, they said unto him, Lord, shall we smite with the sword?

Allora quelli attorno a Gesú, vedendo ciò che stava per accadere, gli dissero: «Signore, dobbiamo colpire con la spada?».

50 A nd one of them smote the slave of the prince of the priests and cut off his right ear.

E uno di loro colpí il servo del sommo sacerdote e gli recise l'orecchio destro.

51 A nd Jesus answered and said, Suffer ye thus far. And he touched his ear and healed him.

Ma Gesú, rispondendo, disse: «Lasciate, basta cosí». E, toccato l'orecchio di quell'uomo, lo guarí.

52 T hen Jesus said unto the princes of the priests and captains of the temple and the elders, who were come to him, Are ye come out as against a thief with swords and staves?

Poi Gesú disse ai capi dei sacerdoti, ai capitani del tempio e agli anziani che erano venuti contro di lui: «Siete usciti contro di me con spade e bastoni come contro un brigante?

53 W hen I was daily with you in the temple, ye stretched forth no hands against me; but this is your hour, and the power of darkness.

Mentre ogni giorno io ero con voi nel tempio, voi non metteste mai le mani su di me; ma questa è la vostra ora e la potestà delle tenebre».

54 ¶ Then they took him and led him and brought him into the house of the prince of the priests. And Peter followed afar off.

Dopo averlo catturato, lo portarono via e lo condussero nella casa del sommo sacerdote. E Pietro seguiva da lontano.

55 A nd when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the hall and were set down together, Peter sat down among them.

Quando essi accesero un fuoco in mezzo al cortile e si posero a sedere attorno, Pietro si sedette in mezzo a loro.

56 B ut a certain maid beheld him as he sat by the fire and earnestly looked upon him and said, This man was also with him.

Una serva lo vide seduto presso il fuoco, lo guardò attentamente e disse: «Anche costui era con lui».

57 A nd he denied him, saying, Woman, I know him not.

Ma egli lo negò, dicendo: «Donna, non lo conosco».

58 A nd after a little while another saw him and said, Thou art also of them. And Peter said, Man, I am not.

Poco dopo lo vide un altro e disse: «Anche tu sei di quelli». Ma Pietro disse: «O uomo, non lo sono».

59 A nd about the space of one hour after, another confidently affirmed, saying, Of a truth this fellow also was with him, for he is a Galilaean.

Passata circa un'ora, un altro affermava con insistenza, dicendo: «In verità anche costui era con lui, perché è Galileo».

60 A nd Peter said, Man, I know not what thou sayest. And immediately while he yet spoke, the cock crew.

Ma Pietro disse: «O uomo, non so quello che dici». E subito, mentre ancora parlava, il gallo cantò.

61 T hen the Lord turned and looked upon Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord how he had said unto him, Before the cock crows, thou shalt deny me three times.

E il Signore, voltatosi, guardò Pietro. E Pietro si ricordò della parola che il Signore gli aveva detto: «Prima che il gallo canti, tu mi rinnegherai tre volte».

62 A nd Peter went out and wept bitterly.

Allora Pietro uscì fuori e pianse amaramente.

63 ¶ And the men that held Jesus mocked him and smote him.

Intanto gli uomini che tenevano Gesú lo schernivano, percuotendolo.

64 A nd when they had blindfolded him, they struck him on the face and asked him, saying, Prophesy, who is it that smote thee?

E, dopo averlo bendato, lo percuotevano in faccia e gli domandavano, dicendo: «Indovina, chi è colui che ti ha percosso?».

65 A nd they spoke many other things blasphemously against him.

E, bestemmiando, dicevano molte altre cose contro di lui.

66 A nd as soon as it was day, the elders of the people and the princes of the priests and the scribes came together and led him into their council, saying,

Appena fu giorno si riunirono gli anziani del popolo, i capi dei sacerdoti e gli scribi e lo condussero nel loro sinedrio, dicendo:

67 A rt thou the Christ? tell us. And he said unto them, If I tell you, ye will not believe;

«Se tu sei il Cristo, diccelo». Ma egli disse loro: «Anche se ve lo dicessi, non credereste.

68 a nd if I also ask you, ye will not answer me nor let me go;

Se poi vi interrogassi, non mi rispondereste né mi lascereste andare.

69 b ut from now on the Son of man shall sit on the right hand of the power of God.

Ma da ora in poi il Figlio dell'uomo sederà alla destra della potenza di Dio».

70 T hen they all said, Art thou then the Son of God? And he said unto them, Ye say that I AM.

Allora tutti dissero: «Sei tu dunque il Figlio di Dio?». Ed egli disse loro: «Voi dite giustamente, perché io lo sono».

71 A nd they said, What need we any further witness? for we ourselves have heard of his own mouth.

Essi allora dissero: «Che bisogno abbiamo ancora di testimonianza? Dal momento che noi stessi l'abbiamo udito dalla sua propria bocca».
