1 ¶ Then Zophar, the Naamathite, answered and said,

Allora Zofar di Naamath rispose e disse:

2 M y thoughts certainly cause me to answer, and therefore, I make haste.

«Per questo i miei pensieri mi spingono a rispondere, a motivo dell'agitazione che sento dentro di me.

3 I have heard the check of my reproach, and the spirit of my intelligence causes me to answer.

Ho udito un rimprovero che mi disonora, ma il mio spirito mi spinge a rispondere in base al mio intendimento.

4 D ost thou not know this that always was, since man was placed upon earth,

Non sai tu che da sempre, da quando l'uomo fu posto sulla terra,

5 t hat the triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the hypocrite but for a moment?

il trionfo dei malvagi dura poco e la gioia degli empi non dura che un istante?

6 T hough his excellency mounts up to the heavens, and his head reaches unto the clouds,

Anche se la sua grandezza giungesse fino al cielo e il suo capo toccasse le nubi.

7 y et he shall perish for ever like his own dung; those who have seen him shall say, What is become of him?

perirà per sempre come il suo sterco; quelli che l'hanno visto diranno: "Dov'è?"

8 H e shall fly away as a dream and shall not be found: yea, he shall flee away as a vision of the night.

Volerà via come un sogno e non si troverà piú; si dileguerà come una visione notturna.

9 T he eye which saw him shall see him no more; neither shall his place behold him any more.

L'occhio che lo guardava, non lo scorgerà piú; anche la sua dimora non lo vedrà piú.

10 ¶ His poor sons shall go forth begging, and their hands shall restore that which he stole.

I suoi figli cercheranno di guadagnarsi il favore dei poveri e le sue mani ristabiliranno la sua ricchezza.

11 H is bones are full of the sins of his youth, which shall be buried with him in the dust.

Il vigore giovanile che gli riempiva le ossa giacerà nella polvere con lui.

12 I f wickedness was sweet in his mouth, if he hid it under his tongue,

Anche se il male è dolce nella sua bocca se lo nasconde sotto la lingua,

13 i f it seemed good unto him, and he did not forsake it, but savored it within his mouth,

non tollera di lasciarlo andare ma continua a tenerlo in bocca.

14 h is food shall be changed in his bowels, it shall be the gall of asps within him.

Il suo cibo però nelle sue viscere si trasforma e diventa un veleno di aspide dentro di lui.

15 H e has swallowed down riches, but he shall vomit them up again; God shall cast them out of his belly.

Egli vomiterà le ricchezze che ha inghiottito; Dio stesso gliele farà uscire dal ventre.

16 H e shall suck the poison of asps; the viper’s tongue shall slay him.

Ha succhiato veleno di aspide, la lingua di una vipera lo ucciderà.

17 H e shall not see the rivers, the floods, the brooks of honey and butter.

Non vedrà piú corsi d'acqua né torrenti, che scorrono con miele e burro.

18 H e shall restore the work that was not his; according to the substance that he took; neither shall he devour, nor rejoice.

Restituirà ciò per cui ha faticato senza neppure ingoiarlo; non avrà alcuna gioia dai profitti del suo commercio.

19 B ecause he oppressed and forsook the poor; because he has violently taken away houses which he did not build,

Poiché ha oppresso e abbandonato il povero, si è impadronito con la forza di una casa che non aveva costruito.

20 t herefore, he shall not feel quietness in his belly; he shall not escape with that which he desired.

Poiché la sua ingordigia non ha mai conosciuto requie, egli non salverà nulla delle cose tanto desiderate.

21 N othing is left that he did not eat; therefore, his goods shall not last.

Nulla sfuggirà alla sua voracità, perciò il suo benessere non durerà.

22 I n the fullness of his sufficiency, he shall come into anguish; the hands of all the wicked shall come upon him.

Nel colmo della sua abbondanza si troverà in strettezze; la mano di tutti quelli che soffrono si leverà contro di lui.

23 ¶ When he is about to fill his belly, God shall cast the fury of his wrath upon him and shall rain it upon him and upon his food.

Quando starà per riempire il suo ventre. Dio manderà su di lui l'ardore della sua ira, che pioverà su di lui mentre sta mangiando.

24 H e shall flee from the weapons of iron, and the bow of bronze shall strike him through.

Egli può sfuggire a un'arma di ferro, ma lo trafiggerà un arco di bronzo.

25 H e shall draw forth an arrow from his quiver, and like lightning it shall strike through his gall; terrors shall come upon him.

Si estrae la freccia che esce dal suo corpo, la scintillante punta esce fuori dal suo fiele; i terrori lo assalgono.

26 A ll darkness is kept for his secrets; a fire not blown shall consume him; his successor shall be broken in his tent.

Tenebre totali sono riservate per i suoi tesori, lo consumerà un fuoco non attizzato; quelli lasciati nella sua tenda saranno in angoscia.

27 T he heavens shall reveal his iniquity; and the earth shall rise up against him.

Il cielo rivelerà la sua iniquità e la terra insorgerà contro di lui.

28 T he increase of his house shall be taken captive; they shall be scattered in the day of his wrath.

Le rendite della sua casa saranno rimosse, portate via nel giorno della sua ira.

29 T his is the portion of a wicked man from God and the heritage that God appoints unto him by his word.

Questa è la sorte che DIO riserva all'uomo malvagio, l'eredità che gli è assegnata da Dio».
