1 ¶ Nevertheless this darkness shall not be the same as the affliction that came upon her when they lightly touched the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, nor afterward when they more grievously afflicted her by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, in Galilee of the Gentiles.

(08-23) Ma le tenebre non dureranno sempre su colei che ora è nell'angoscia. Come nei tempi passati egli ha coperto di obbrobrio il paese di Zabulon, e il paese di Neftali, cosí in avvenire coprirà di gloria la terra vicina al mare, oltre il Giordano, la Galilea dei gentili.

2 T he people that walked in darkness have seen a great light; those that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them has the light shined.

(09-1) Il popolo che camminava nelle tenebre ha visto una grande luce; su coloro che abitavano nel paese dell'ombra della morte, si è levata una luce.

3 A s thou hast multiplied the nation, thou hast not increased the joy. They shall rejoice before thee as they rejoice in the harvest and as men rejoice when they divide the spoil.

(09-2) Tu hai accresciuto la nazione, hai aumentato la loro gioia; essi gioiscono davanti a te come si gioisce alla mietitura, e come si giubila quando si divide il bottino.

4 F or thou hast broken his heavy yoke and the staff of his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, as in the day of Midian.

(09-3) Poiché tu hai spezzato il giogo che gravava su di lui, il bastone sulle sue spalle e la verga di chi l'opprimeva, come nel giorno di Madian.

5 F or every battle of him who fights is with shaking of the earth and the rolling of garments in blood; but this shall be with burning and consuming of fire.

(09-4) Poiché ogni calzatura di guerriero nella mischia e ogni mantello rotolato nel sangue, sarà destinato ad essere arso e sarà esca del fuoco.

6 F or unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and the government is placed upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called The Wonderful One, The Counsellor, The God, The Mighty One, The Eternal Father, The Prince of Peace.

(09-5) Poiché un bambino ci è nato, un figlio ci è stato dato. Sulle sue spalle riposerà l'impero, e sarà chiamato Consigliere ammirabile, Dio potente, Padre eterno. Principe della pace.

7 T he multitude of his dominion and the peace shall have no end upon the throne of David and upon his Kingdom, ordering it and confirming it in judgment and in righteousness from now on even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of the hosts will perform this.

(09-6) Non ci sarà fine all'incremento del suo impero e pace sul trono di Davide e sul suo regno, per stabilirlo fermamente e rafforzarlo mediante il giudizio e la giustizia, ora e sempre. Questo farà lo zelo dell'Eterno degli eserciti.

8 ¶ The Lord sent a word into Jacob, and it has lighted upon Israel.

(09-7) Il Signore manda una parola contro Giacobbe, ed essa è caduta

9 A nd all the people shall know, even Ephraim and the inhabitant of Samaria, that say in pride and arrogance of heart,

(09-8) Tutto il popolo la conoscerà, Efraim e gli abitanti di Samaria, che nel loro orgoglio e arroganza di cuore dicono:

10 T he bricks are fallen down, but we will build with hewn stones; the wild fig trees are cut down, but we will put cedars in their place.

(09-9) «I mattoni sono caduti, ma noi ricostruiremo con pietre squadrate; i sicomori sono stati tagliati, ma noi li sostituiremo con cedri».

11 T herefore the LORD shall set up the adversaries of Rezin against him and join his enemies together,

(09-10) Per questo l'Eterno susciterà contro di lui gli avversari di Retsin e spronerà i suoi nemici:

12 t he Syrians before, and the Philistines behind; and they shall devour Israel with open mouth. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

(09-11) i Siri dall'oriente, i Filistei dall'occidente, che divoreranno Israele a bocca spalancata. Malgrado tutto ciò la sua ira non si calma e la sua mano rimane distesa.

13 B ut the people did not turn unto him that smote them, neither did they seek the LORD of the hosts.

(09-12) Tuttavia il popolo non torna a colui che lo colpisce e non cerca l'Eterno degli eserciti.

14 T herefore the LORD will cut off from Israel head and tail, branch and rush, in one day.

(09-13) Perciò l'Eterno reciderà da Israele capo e coda, ramo di palma e giunco in un solo giorno.

15 T he ancient and venerable to look upon is the head; the prophet that teaches lies, he is the tail.

(09-14) L'anziano, e il notabile sono il capo, e il profeta che insegna la menzogna è la coda.

16 F or the governors of this people are deceivers, and those who are governed by them are lost.

(09-15) Quelli che guidano questo popolo lo fanno sviare, e quelli che sono da loro guidati sono divorati.

17 T herefore the Lord shall have no joy in their young men, neither shall he have mercy on their fatherless and widows, for every one is a hypocrite and an evildoer, and every mouth speaks folly. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

(09-16) Perciò l'Eterno non si compiacerà dei suoi giovani, né avrà compassione dei suoi orfani e delle sue vedove, perché tutti sono ipocriti e perversi, e ogni bocca proferisce follia. Malgrado tutto ciò la sua ira non si calma e la sua mano rimane distesa.

18 F or wickedness burns as the fire, it shall devour the briers and thorns and shall kindle in the thickets of the forest, and they shall mount up like the lifting up of smoke.

(09-17) Poiché la malvagità arde come un fuoco, che divora rovi e pruni e divampa nel folto della foresta, che salgono quindi in alto come una colonna di fumo.

19 T hrough the wrath of the LORD of the hosts the land is darkened, and the people shall be as the fuel of the fire; no man shall spare his brother.

(09-18) Per l'ira dell'Eterno degli eserciti il paese brucia e il popolo è come esca per il fuoco; nessuno ha pietà del proprio fratello.

20 A nd he shall snatch on the right hand and be hungry, and he shall eat on the left hand, and they shall not be satisfied; they shall eat each man the flesh of his own arm:

(09-19) Si strappa via a destra, ma si è ancora affamati; si divora a sinistra, ma non ci si sazia; ognuno divora la carne del proprio braccio:

21 M anasseh, Ephraim; and Ephraim, Manasseh; and they together shall be against Judah. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

(09-20) Manasse, divora Efraim, ed Efraim Manasse; e insieme sono contro Giuda. Malgrado tutto ciò la sua ira non si calma e la sua mano rimane distesa
