1 ¶ Nevertheless this darkness shall not be the same as the affliction that came upon her when they lightly touched the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, nor afterward when they more grievously afflicted her by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, in Galilee of the Gentiles.

(8-23) Бо не буде темноти для того, хто утискуваний. Перша пора злегковажила була край Завулонів та край Нефталимів, а остання прославить дорогу приморську, другий бік Йордану, округу поганів.

2 T he people that walked in darkness have seen a great light; those that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them has the light shined.

(9-1) Народ, який в темряві ходить, Світло велике побачить, і над тими, хто сидить у краю тіні смерти, Світло засяє над ними!

3 A s thou hast multiplied the nation, thou hast not increased the joy. They shall rejoice before thee as they rejoice in the harvest and as men rejoice when they divide the spoil.

(9-2) Ти помножиш народ цей, Ти збільшиш йому радість. Вони перед лицем Твоїм будуть радіти, як радіють в жнива, як тішаться в час, коли ділять здобич!

4 F or thou hast broken his heavy yoke and the staff of his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, as in the day of Midian.

(9-3) Бо зламав Ти ярмо тягару його, і кия з рамена його, жезло його пригнобителя, як за днів Мадіяма.

5 F or every battle of him who fights is with shaking of the earth and the rolling of garments in blood; but this shall be with burning and consuming of fire.

(9-4) Усякий бо чобіт військовий, що гупає гучно, та одежа, поплямлена кров'ю, стане все це пожежею, за їжу огню!

6 F or unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and the government is placed upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called The Wonderful One, The Counsellor, The God, The Mighty One, The Eternal Father, The Prince of Peace.

(9-5) Бо Дитя народилося нам, даний нам Син, і влада на раменах Його, і кликнуть ім'я Йому: Дивний Порадник, Бог сильний, Отець вічности, Князь миру.

7 T he multitude of his dominion and the peace shall have no end upon the throne of David and upon his Kingdom, ordering it and confirming it in judgment and in righteousness from now on even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of the hosts will perform this.

(9-6) Без кінця буде множитися панування та мир на троні Давида й у царстві його, щоб поставити міцно його й щоб підперти його правосуддям та правдою відтепер й аж навіки, ревність Господа Саваота це зробить!

8 ¶ The Lord sent a word into Jacob, and it has lighted upon Israel.

(9-7) Проти Якова слово послав був Господь, а впало воно на Ізраїля,

9 A nd all the people shall know, even Ephraim and the inhabitant of Samaria, that say in pride and arrogance of heart,

(9-8) і пізнає народ, увесь він, Єфрем та мешканець Самарії, що говорять з пихою й надутістю серця:

10 T he bricks are fallen down, but we will build with hewn stones; the wild fig trees are cut down, but we will put cedars in their place.

(9-9) Попадали цегли, а ми побудуємо з каменя тесаного, сікомори позрубувано, та замінимо їх кедрами!

11 T herefore the LORD shall set up the adversaries of Rezin against him and join his enemies together,

(9-10) Та над ним Господь зміцнив противників Реціна, а його ворогів нацькував:

12 t he Syrians before, and the Philistines behind; and they shall devour Israel with open mouth. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

(9-11) Арама попереду, а филистимлян позаду, і пожерли Ізраїля цілою пащею... При цьому всьому не відвернувсь Його гнів, і витягнена ще рука Його!

13 B ut the people did not turn unto him that smote them, neither did they seek the LORD of the hosts.

(9-12) Та народ не звернувся до Того, Хто вразив його, і не шукали Господа Саваота...

14 T herefore the LORD will cut off from Israel head and tail, branch and rush, in one day.

(9-13) Тому то Господь відсік від Ізраїля голову й хвіст, пальму й очеретину за одного дня.

15 T he ancient and venerable to look upon is the head; the prophet that teaches lies, he is the tail.

(9-14) Старий та поважаний це та голова, а пророк, що навчає неправди, це хвіст.

16 F or the governors of this people are deceivers, and those who are governed by them are lost.

(9-15) І сталося, що поводатарі цього народу зробилися звідниками, і гинуть проваджені ними.

17 T herefore the Lord shall have no joy in their young men, neither shall he have mercy on their fatherless and widows, for every one is a hypocrite and an evildoer, and every mouth speaks folly. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

(9-16) Тому то його юнаками радіти не буде Господь, а до сиріт його й його вдів милосердя не матиме, бо кожен безбожний й злочинець, і злобне всі уста говорять. При цьому всьому не відвернувсь Його гнів, і витягнена ще рука Його!...

18 F or wickedness burns as the fire, it shall devour the briers and thorns and shall kindle in the thickets of the forest, and they shall mount up like the lifting up of smoke.

(9-17) Бо злоба горить, як огонь, пожирає тернину й будяччя, і палає по запустах лісу, і крутяться вверх стовпи диму...

19 T hrough the wrath of the LORD of the hosts the land is darkened, and the people shall be as the fuel of the fire; no man shall spare his brother.

(9-18) Від лютости Господа Саваота земля загориться, і стане народ, як пожива огню, і не пощадить жоден брата свого!...

20 A nd he shall snatch on the right hand and be hungry, and he shall eat on the left hand, and they shall not be satisfied; they shall eat each man the flesh of his own arm:

(9-19) І різати буде праворуч, та буде голодний, і жертиме зліва, але не насититься, кожен жертиме тіло рамена свого:

21 M anasseh, Ephraim; and Ephraim, Manasseh; and they together shall be against Judah. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

(9-20) Манасія Єфрема, а Єфрем Манасію, разом обоє на Юду... При цьому всьому не відвернувсь Його гнів, і витягнена ще рука Його!...
