1 ¶ Then all the sons of Israel went out, and the congregation was gathered together as one man, from Dan to Beersheba and the land of Gilead, unto the LORD in Mizpeh.

І повиходили всі Ізраїлеві сини, і була зібрана громада, як один чоловік, від Дану аж до Беер-Шеви, а ґілеадський край до Господа в Міцпу.

2 A nd the chief of all the people, even of all the tribes of Israel, were present in the assembly of the people of God, four hundred thousand footmen that drew sword.

І стали проводирі всього того народу, усі Ізраїлеві племена, на зборах Божого народу, чотириста тисяч пішого люду, хто витягує меча.

3 ( Now the sons of Benjamin heard that the sons of Israel were gone up to Mizpeh.) Then the sons of Israel said, Tell us, how was this wickedness?

І почули Веніяминові сини, що Ізраїлеві сини ввійшли до Міцпи. І сказали Ізраїлеві сини: Скажіть, як сталося таке зло?

4 A nd the Levite, the husband of the woman that was murdered, answered and said, I came into Gibeah of Benjamin with my concubine to pass the night there.

І відповів той чоловік Левит, чоловік тієї замордованої жінки, та й сказав: До Ґів'и, що Веніяминова, увійшов я та наложниця моя, щоб ночувати.

5 A nd the men of Gibeah rose up against me and beset the house round about upon me by night and thought to have slain me, and they have forced my concubine in such a manner that she is dead.

І встали на мене господарі Ґів'и, і вночі оточили через мене той дім. Мене замишляли забити, а наложницю мою збезчестили, і померла вона.

6 T hen I took my concubine and cut her in pieces and sent her throughout all the country of the possession of Israel, for they have committed lewdness and folly in Israel.

І схопив я наложницю, і порізав її, та й послав її по всьому полі Ізраїлевого володіння, бо вони вчинили розпусту та гидоту серед Ізраїля.

7 B ehold, all ye sons of Israel; give here your advice and counsel.

Ось ви всі Ізраїлеві сини, дайте собі тут слово та раду!

8 T hen all the people arose as one man, saying, We will not any of us go to his tent, neither will we any of us turn into his house

І встав увесь народ, як один муж, говорячи: Не підемо ніхто до намету свого, і не знайдемо ніхто до дому свого!

9 u ntil we do this upon Gibeah that we cast lots against it;

А тепер оце та річ, що зробимо Ґів'ї: підемо на неї за жеребком!

10 a nd we will take ten men of a hundred throughout all the tribes of Israel, and a hundred of a thousand, and a thousand out of ten thousand, to fetch provisions for the people that shall go against Gibeah of Benjamin, according to all the folly that they have wrought in Israel.

І візьмемо десятеро людей на сотню, щодо всіх Ізраїлевих племен, і сотню на тисячу, і тисячу на десять тисяч, щоб узяли поживи для народу, щоб вони прийшли зробити Ґів'ї Веніямина, згідно з усією гидотою, що він зробив Ізраїлеві.

11 S o all the men of Israel were gathered against the city, knit together as one man.

І був зібраний кожен ізраїльтянин до того міста разом, як один чоловік.

12 ¶ And the tribes of Israel sent men through all the tribe of Benjamin, saying, What wickedness is this that is done among you?

І послали Ізраїлеві племена людей по всіх Веніяминових родах, говорячи: Що це за зло, що сталось між вами?

13 N ow therefore deliver us those men, the sons of Belial, who are in Gibeah, that we may put them to death and put away the evil from Israel. But the sons of Benjamin would not hearken to the voice of their brethren, the sons of Israel;

А тепер давайте тих людей, розпусних синів, що в Ґів'ї, і ми повбиваємо їх, та й вигубимо зло з Ізраїля. Та не хотіли Веніяминові сини слухати голосу своїх братів, Ізраїлевих синів.

14 b ut the sons of Benjamin gathered themselves together out of the cities in Gibeah to go out to battle against the sons of Israel.

І Веніяминові сини були зібрані з міст до Ґів'ї, щоб піти на війну з Ізраїлевими синами.

15 A nd the sons of Benjamin were numbered at that time out of the cities twenty-six thousand men that drew sword, besides the inhabitants of Gibeah, who were numbered seven hundred chosen men.

І Веніяминові сини з міст були перелічені того дня, двадцять і шість тисяч чоловіка, що витягують меча, окрім мешканців Ґів'и, із них були перелічені сім сотень вибраного чоловіка.

16 A mong all this people there were seven hundred chosen men with their right hands impeded (they were lefthanded); each one could sling stones at a hairs breadth, and not miss.

З усього того народу було сім сотень вибраного чоловіка, із нечинною рукою правиці своєї, лівші, кожен той кидав каменем із пращі на волос, і не схибував.

17 A nd the men of Israel, not counting Benjamin, were numbered four hundred thousand men that drew sword; all these were men of war.

І були перелічені ізраїльтяни, окрім Веніямина, чотириста тисяч чоловіка, що витягують меча, кожен військовий.

18 ¶ Then the sons of Israel arose and went up to the house of God and asked counsel of God and said, Which of us shall go up first to the battle against the sons of Benjamin? And the LORD said, Judah shall go up first.

І встали вони, і ввійшли до Бет-Елу, і питалися Бога, та й сказали Ізраїлеві сини: Хто піде нам спереду на бій з Веніяминовими синами? І сказав Господь: Юда спереду.

19 A nd the sons of Israel rose up in the morning and encamped against Gibeah.

І встали Ізраїлеві сини рано вранці, і таборували при Ґів'ї.

20 A nd the men of Israel went out to battle against Benjamin; and the men of Israel put themselves in order to fight against them at Gibeah.

І вийшов Ізраїльтянин на війну з Веніямином, і сточили ізраїльтяни з ними бій при Ґів'ї.

21 A nd the sons of Benjamin came forth out of Gibeah and destroyed down to the ground twenty-two thousand men of the Israelites that day.

І вийшли Веніяминові сини з Ґів'и, та й повалили між Ізраїлем того дня двадцять і дві тисячі чоловіка на землю.

22 A nd the people encouraged themselves, and the men of Israel set their battle again in order in the place where they put themselves in order the first day.

І зміцнився народ, Ізраїлеві мужі, і точили бій далі в тому місці, де точили бій першого дня.

23 ( And the sons of Israel went up and wept before the LORD until evening and asked counsel of the LORD, saying, Shall I go up again to battle against the sons of Benjamin, my brother? And the LORD said, Go up against him.)

І ввійшли Ізраїлеві сини до Бет-Елу, та й плакали перед Господнім лицем аж до вечора. І питалися вони Господа, говорячи: Чи далі піду я на бій з синами Веніямина, мого брата? І сказав Господь: Ідіть на нього!

24 A nd the sons of Israel came near against the sons of Benjamin the second day.

І прийшли Ізраїлеві сини до Веніяминових синів дня другого.

25 A nd Benjamin went forth against them out of Gibeah the second day and again destroyed down to the ground eighteen thousand of the sons of Israel; all these drew the sword.

А Веніямин вийшов із Ґів'ї другого дня навпроти них, та й повалив між Ізраїлевими синами на землю ще вісімнадцять тисяч чоловіка, усі ті, що витягають меча.

26 ¶ Then all the sons of Israel and all the people went up and came unto the house of God and wept and sat there before the LORD and fasted that day until evening and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the LORD.

І прийшли всі Ізраїлеві сини та ввесь народ, і ввійшли до Бет-Елу, та й плакали, і сиділи там перед Господнім лицем, і постили того дня аж до вечора. І принесли вони цілопалення та мирні жертви перед Господнім лицем.

27 A nd the sons of Israel enquired of the LORD (for the ark of the covenant of God was there in those days,

І питалися Ізраїлеві сини Господа (а за тих днів ковчег Божого заповіту був там.

28 a nd Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, stood before it in those days), saying, Shall I yet again go out to battle against the sons of Benjamin, my brother, or shall I cease? And the LORD said, Go up, for tomorrow I will deliver them into thy hand.

А Пінхас, син Елеазара, Ааронового сина, стояв тими днями перед Його лицем), говорячи: Чи далі піду ще на бій з синами Веніямина, мого брата, чи спинюся? А Господь сказав: Ідіть, бо взавтра Я дам його в твою руку.

29 A nd Israel set ambushes round about Gibeah.

І поставив Ізраїль засідку навколо Ґів'ї.

30 A nd the sons of Israel went up against the sons of Benjamin on the third day and put themselves in order against Gibeah as at the other times.

І пішли Ізраїлеві сини на синив Веніяминових третього дня, і сточили бій проти Ґів'ї, як і раніш.

31 A nd the sons of Benjamin went out against the people and were drawn away from the city, and they began to smite of the people and kill as at the other times in the highways, one of which goes up to the house of God and the other to Gibeah by the field, and they killed about thirty men of Israel.

І вийшли Веніяминові сини навпроти народу, одірвалися від міста, і зачали класти трупи з народу, як раз-у-раз, на битих дорогах, що одна йде до Бет-Елу, а одна до Ґів'ї, у полі, коло тридцяти чоловіка між Ізраїлем.

32 A nd the sons of Benjamin said, They are smitten down before us as at the first. But the sons of Israel said, Let us flee and draw them from the city unto the highways.

І сказали Веніяминові сини: Биті вони перед нами, як перше! А Ізраїлеві сини сказали: Утікаймо, і відірвемо їх від міста на дороги.

33 T hen all the men of Israel rose up out of their place and put themselves in order at Baaltamar, and also those of the ambushes of Israel came forth out of their place, out of the meadows of Gibeah.

І кожен муж Ізраїля повстав із свого місця, і сточили бій у Баал-Тамарі, а Ізраїлева засідка рушила з свого місця, з Мааре-Ґева.

34 A nd ten thousand chosen men out of all Israel came against Gibeah, and the battle was sore; but they did not know that evil was near them.

І прийшли перед Ґів'у десять тисяч чоловіка, вибраного з усього Ізраїля, і бій став тяжкий. А вони не знали, що суне на них те зло.

35 A nd the LORD smote Benjamin before Israel, and the sons of Israel destroyed of the Benjamites that day twenty-five thousand one hundred men; all these drew the sword.

І вдарив Господь Веніямина перед Ізраїлем, і Ізраїлеві сини повалили того дня між Веніямином двадцять і п'ять тисяч і сто чоловіка, усі ті, що витягають меча.

36 S o the sons of Benjamin saw that they were smitten, for the men of Israel had given place to the Benjamites because they trusted those of the ambushes which they had set behind Gibeah.

І побачили Веніяминові сини, що побиті вони, а ізраїльтяни уступили місце Веніяминові, бо вірили засідці, яку поставили на Ґів'у.

37 T hen the men of the ambushes rushed upon Gibeah and spread out and smote all the city with the edge of the sword.

А засідка поспішилася, і напала на Ґів'у. І засідка вступилася, і побила все місто вістрям меча.

38 N ow there was an appointed sign between the men of Israel and the men of the ambushes that they should make a great signal by causing much smoke to rise up out of the city.

А Ізраїльтянин мав із засідкою умовленого знака, щоб із міста підняла великий дим.

39 T hen when the men of Israel turned their backs in the battle and those of Benjamin began to smite and kill of the men of Israel about thirty persons, for they said, Surely they are smitten down before us as in the first battle.

І відступили ізраїльтяни в бою, а Веніямин зачав класти трупи в Ізраїлі, близько тридцятеро люда, бо казали вони: Дійсно, справді побитий він перед нами, як за першого бою!

40 B ut when the signal began to arise up out of the city, a pillar of smoke, those of Benjamin looked behind them, and, behold, the whole consumption of the city ascended up to heaven.

А з міста став підійматися стовп диму. І обернувся Веніямин позад себе, аж ось усе місто піднялося димом до неба!

41 T hen the men of Israel turned again, and the men of Benjamin were terrified, for they saw that evil was come upon them.

І обернувся Ізраїльтянин, а Веніяминівець перестрашився, бо побачив, що досягло його те зло.

42 T herefore, they turned their backs before the men of Israel unto the way of the wilderness, but the battle overtook them, and those who came out of the cities they destroyed in the midst of them.

І обернулися вони перед Ізраїльтянином до дороги на пустиню, та бій досягав його, а ті, що з міст, валили його в середині його.

43 T hus they inclosed those of Benjamin round about and chased them and trode them down with ease over against Gibeah toward the sunrising.

Вони оточили Веніямина, гнали його до Менухи, топтали його аж до Ґів'ї зо сходу сонця.

44 A nd there fell of Benjamin eighteen thousand men; all these were men of valour.

Полягло тоді з Веніямина вісімнадцять тисяч чоловіка, усе це люди хоробрі.

45 A nd they turned and fled toward the wilderness unto the rock of Rimmon; and they gleaned of them in the highways five thousand men and pursued hard after them unto Gidom, and slew two thousand men of them.

І повернулися вони, і втікли в пустиню до Села-Ріммону. А ті побили поодиноких утікачів по дорогах, як дозбирюється останній виноград, п'ять тисяч люда. І гналися за ними аж до Ґід'ому, і побили з нього дві тисячі люда.

46 S o that all who fell that day of Benjamin were twenty-five thousand men that drew the sword; all these were men of valour.

І було всіх, що впали того дня з Веніямина, двадцять і п'ять тисяч чоловіка, що витягають меча, усе це люди хоробрі.

47 B ut six hundred men turned and fled to the wilderness unto the rock Rimmon and abode in the rock Rimmon four months.

І обернулися вони, і повтікали в пустиню до Села-Ріммону, шістсот чоловіка. І сиділи вони в Села-Ріммоні чотири місяці.

48 A nd the men of Israel turned again upon the sons of Benjamin and smote them with the edge of the sword, men and beasts in every city and all that was found; they also set on fire all the cities that they came to.

А ізраїльтяни вернулися до Веніяминових синів, та й повбивали їх вістрям меча, мужчин із міста, і худобу, і все знайдене. А всі міста, що знаходились по дорозі, пустили з огнем.
