1 ¶ A wise son takes his father’s chastening: but a scorner does not hear rebuke.

Син мудрий приймає картання від батька, а насмішник докору не слухає.

2 ¶ Of the fruit of his mouth man shall eat well: but the soul of the transgressors shall starve.

З плоду уст чоловік споживає добро, а жадоба зрадливих насильство.

3 ¶ He that keeps his mouth keeps his life: but he that opens his lips often shall have calamity.

Хто уста свої стереже, той душу свою береже, а хто губи свої розпускає, на того погибіль.

4 ¶ The soul of the sluggard desires, and attains nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat.

Пожадає душа лінюха, та даремно, душа ж роботящих насититься.

5 ¶ The righteous man hates lying: but the wicked man makes himself loathsome, and abominable.

Ненавидить праведний слово брехливе, безбожний же чинить лихе, і себе засоромлює.

6 ¶ Righteousness keeps the one of the perfect way: but wickedness overthrows the sinner.

Праведність оберігає невинного на дорозі його, а безбожність погублює грішника.

7 ¶ There are those that make themselves rich, yet have nothing: there are those that make themselves poor, yet have great riches.

Дехто вдає багача, хоч нічого не має, а дехто вдає бідака, хоч маєток великий у нього.

8 ¶ The redemption of a man’s life is his riches: but the poor does not hear rebuke.

Викуп за душу людини багатство її, а вбогий й докору не чує.

9 ¶ The light of the righteous shall rejoice: but the fire of the wicked shall be put out.

Світло праведних весело світить, а світильник безбожних погасне.

10 ¶ Pride shall certainly give birth to contention: but with the well advised is wisdom.

Тільки сварка пихою зчиняється, а мудрість із тими, хто радиться.

11 ¶ The riches of vanity shall be diminished: but he that gathers by labour shall increase.

Багатство, заскоро здобуте, поменшується, хто ж збирає помалу примножує.

12 ¶ Hope deferred makes the heart sick: but when the desire is fulfilled, it is a tree of life.

Задовга надія недуга для серця, а бажання, що сповнюється, це дерево життя.

13 ¶ Whosoever despises the word shall perish by it: but he that fears the commandment shall be rewarded.

Хто погорджує словом Господнім, той шкодить собі, хто ж страх має до заповіді, тому надолужиться.

14 ¶ The law of the wise is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death.

Наука премудрого криниця життя, щоб віддалитися від пасток смерти.

15 ¶ Good understanding brings forth grace: but the way of transgressors is hard.

Добрий розум приносить приємність, а дорога зрадливих погуба для них.

16 ¶ Every sane man works according to wisdom: but the fool shall manifest his folly.

Кожен розумний за мудрістю робить, а безумний глупоту показує.

17 ¶ A bad messenger shall fall into evil: but a faithful ambassador is medicine.

Безбожний посол у нещастя впаде, а вірний посол немов лік.

18 ¶ Poverty and shame shall be to him that refuses chastening: but he that regards reproof shall be honoured.

Хто ламає поуку убозтво та ганьба тому, а хто береже осторогу шанований він.

19 ¶ The desire accomplished is sweet to the soul: but it is abomination to fools to depart from evil.

Виконане побажання приємне душі, а вступитись від зла то огида безумним.

20 ¶ He that walks with wise men shall be wise, but the companion of fools shall be destroyed.

Хто з мудрими ходить, той мудрим стає, а хто товаришує з безумним, той лиха набуде.

21 ¶ Evil pursues sinners, but to the righteous good shall be repaid.

Грішників зло доганяє, а праведним Бог надолужить добром.

22 ¶ A good man shall leave an inheritance to his children’s children, and the wealth of the sinner is laid up for the just.

Добрий лишає спадок і онукам, маєток же грішника схований буде для праведного.

23 ¶ In the fallow ground of the poor there is much bread, but it is lost for lack of judgment.

Убогому буде багато поживи і з поля невправного, та деякі гинуть з безправ'я.

24 ¶ He that cuts short chastening hates his son, but he that loves him chastens him early.

Хто стримує різку свою, той ненавидить сина свого, хто ж кохає його, той шукає для нього картання.

25 ¶ The righteous eats until his soul is satisfied, but the belly of the wicked shall lack.

Праведний їсть, скільки схоче душа, живіт же безбожників завсіди брак відчуває.
