1 ¶ A wise son takes his father’s chastening: but a scorner does not hear rebuke.

Мудрый сын принимает наставление своего отца, а глумливый упреков не слушает.

2 ¶ Of the fruit of his mouth man shall eat well: but the soul of the transgressors shall starve.

От плода своих уст человек вкушает благо, а лживые тяготеют к жестокости.

3 ¶ He that keeps his mouth keeps his life: but he that opens his lips often shall have calamity.

Стерегущий уста хранит свою жизнь, а говорящий опрометчиво себя погубит.

4 ¶ The soul of the sluggard desires, and attains nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat.

Лентяй желает и ничего не получает, а желания усердного исполняются до конца.

5 ¶ The righteous man hates lying: but the wicked man makes himself loathsome, and abominable.

Праведник ненавидит ложь, а неправедные приносят срам и бесчестие.

6 ¶ Righteousness keeps the one of the perfect way: but wickedness overthrows the sinner.

Праведность хранит тех, чей путь прям, а нечестие губит грешника.

7 ¶ There are those that make themselves rich, yet have nothing: there are those that make themselves poor, yet have great riches.

Один притворяется богатым, но ничего не имеет; другой притворяется бедным, будучи очень богат.

8 ¶ The redemption of a man’s life is his riches: but the poor does not hear rebuke.

Богатством можно выкупить жизнь человека, а бедняку и не угрожает никто.

9 ¶ The light of the righteous shall rejoice: but the fire of the wicked shall be put out.

Свет праведных светит весело, а светильник нечестивых гаснет.

10 ¶ Pride shall certainly give birth to contention: but with the well advised is wisdom.

Высокомерие только рождает ссоры, а мудрость у тех, кто внимает советам.

11 ¶ The riches of vanity shall be diminished: but he that gathers by labour shall increase.

Тает богатство, что быстро нажито, а копящий мало-помалу накопит много.

12 ¶ Hope deferred makes the heart sick: but when the desire is fulfilled, it is a tree of life.

Не сбывающаяся надежда томит сердце, а сбывшееся желание – дерево жизни.

13 ¶ Whosoever despises the word shall perish by it: but he that fears the commandment shall be rewarded.

Презирающий наставление сам себя губит, а чтущий заповедь будет вознагражден.

14 ¶ The law of the wise is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death.

Учение мудрых – источник жизни, отводящий от сетей смерти.

15 ¶ Good understanding brings forth grace: but the way of transgressors is hard.

Здравый разум вызывает расположение, а путь вероломных ведет к погибели.

16 ¶ Every sane man works according to wisdom: but the fool shall manifest his folly.

Всякий разумный поступает со знанием, а глупец выказывает свою дурость.

17 ¶ A bad messenger shall fall into evil: but a faithful ambassador is medicine.

Жди от плохого посла беды, а от верного вестника – исцеления.

18 ¶ Poverty and shame shall be to him that refuses chastening: but he that regards reproof shall be honoured.

Бедность и стыд пренебрегающему наставлением, а внимающего упреку почтят.

19 ¶ The desire accomplished is sweet to the soul: but it is abomination to fools to depart from evil.

Сладко душе сбывшееся желание, а глупцам противно от зла отвернуться.

20 ¶ He that walks with wise men shall be wise, but the companion of fools shall be destroyed.

Кто общается с мудрыми, сам станет мудр, а спутник глупцов попадет в беду.

21 ¶ Evil pursues sinners, but to the righteous good shall be repaid.

Несчастье преследует грешника, а благополучие – награда для праведных.

22 ¶ A good man shall leave an inheritance to his children’s children, and the wealth of the sinner is laid up for the just.

Добрый человек оставит наследство детям своих детей, а богатство грешных копится для праведных.

23 ¶ In the fallow ground of the poor there is much bread, but it is lost for lack of judgment.

Много хлеба может дать и поле бедняка, но несправедливость отнимает у него урожай.

24 ¶ He that cuts short chastening hates his son, but he that loves him chastens him early.

Жалеющий розгу не любит своего сына, а кто любит, прилежно его наказывает.

25 ¶ The righteous eats until his soul is satisfied, but the belly of the wicked shall lack.

Праведник досыта будет есть, а нечестивый – ходить голодным.
