1 ¶ Now when the enemies of Judah and Benjamin heard that the sons of the captivity built the temple unto the LORD God of Israel,

2 t hen they came to Zerubbabel and to the heads of the fathers and said unto them, Let us build with you, for we seek your God, as ye do; and we do sacrifice unto him since the days of Esarhaddon, king of Assur, who brought us up here.

они пришли к Зоровавелю и главам семейств и сказали: – Позвольте нам строить вместе с вами. Ведь мы, как и вы, обращаемся за помощью к вашему Богу и приносим Ему жертвы со времен Асархаддона, царя Ассирии, который нас сюда поселил.

3 B ut Zerubbabel and Jeshua and the rest of the heads of the fathers of Israel, said unto them, Ye have nothing to do with us to build a house unto our God; but we alone will build unto the LORD God of Israel as King Cyrus, the king of Persia, commanded us.

Но Зоровавель, Иисус и остальные главы семейств Израиля ответили: – Не строить вам вместе с нами дом нашему Богу. Мы одни будем строить его Господу, Богу Израиля, как повелел нам персидский царь Кир.

4 T hen the people of the land weakened the hands of the people of Judah and troubled them in building

Тогда народы, бывшие вокруг них, начали отговаривать народ Иудеи от строительства и пугать его, чтобы они не строили дальше.

5 a nd hired counsellors against them, to frustrate their counsel, all the days of Cyrus, king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius, king of Persia.

6 ¶ And in the reign of Ahasuerus, in the beginning of his reign, they wrote accusations against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem.

В начале правления Ксеркса они написали обвинение на жителей Иудеи и Иерусалима.

7 A nd in the days of Artaxerxes wrote Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of their companions, unto Artaxerxes, king of Persia; and the writing of the letter was written in the Syrian tongue and interpreted in the Syrian tongue.

И в дни Артаксеркса, царя Персии, Бишлам, Митредат, Тавеел и другие их сподвижники написали Артаксерксу письмо. Письмо было написано арамейским шрифтом и на арамейском языке.

8 R ehum, the chancellor, and Shimshai, the scribe, wrote a letter against Jerusalem to Artaxerxes, the king, in this sort:

Царский наместник Рехум и писарь Шимшай написали царю Артаксерксу против Иерусалима такое письмо:

9 T hen wrote Rehum, the chancellor, and Shimshai, the scribe, and the rest of their companions, the Dinaites, the Apharsathchites, the Tarpelites, the Apharsites, the Archevites, the Babylonians, the Susanchites, the Dehavites, and the Elamites,

Рехум, царский наместник, и Шимшай, писарь, вместе с прочими своими друзьями – судьями сановниками, наместниками, чиновниками, теми, кто родом из Эреха и Вавилона, еламитами из Суз

10 a nd the rest of the nations whom the great and noble Asnappar (Sennacherib) brought over and set in the cities of Samaria and the rest that are on the other side of the river, and of Cheenet.

и прочими народами, которых могущественный и досточтимый Аснафар пленил и переселил в города Самарии и в другие места за Евфратом.

11 T his is the copy of the letter that they sent: Unto Artaxerxes, the king: Thy servants, the men of the other side of the river, and of Cheenet.

(Это копия письма, которое они ему послали.) Царю Артаксерксу – от твоих рабов, жителей провинции за Евфратом:

12 B e it known unto the king that the Jews who came up from thee to us are come unto Jerusalem, building the rebellious and the bad city, and have founded the walls thereof and joined the foundations.

Да будет известно царю, что иудеи, которые пришли к нам от тебя, пошли в Иерусалим и отстраивают этот мятежный и злой город. Они восстанавливают стены и укрепляют основания.

13 B e it known now unto the king, that, if this city is rebuilt, and the walls founded, they will not pay toll, tribute, and custom, and so the revenue of the kings shall be reduced.

Да будет известно царю и то, что если этот город будет отстроен и стены его будут укреплены, то ни налог, ни дань, ни пошлина платиться не будут, и царские доходы сократятся.

14 N ow because we are salted with the salt of the palace, and it is not just unto us to see the king’s dishonour; therefore, we have sent to make this known unto the king,

Так как мы в долгу перед дворцом и не можем смотреть, как царю наносится бесчестие, мы и посылаем известить царя,

15 t hat search may be made in the book of the records of our fathers; so shalt thou find in the book of the records and know that this city is a rebellious city and hurtful unto kings and provinces and that from old time they form rebellions in the midst of her, for which cause this city was destroyed.

чтобы поискали в летописях твоих предшественников. В них ты найдешь, что город этот – мятежный город, пагубный для царей и провинций, и с древности – очаг мятежа. Поэтому-то он и был разрушен.

16 W e notify the king that if this city is built again, and its walls founded, the portion on the other side of the river shall no longer be yours.

Мы извещаем царя, что если этот город будет отстроен и стены его будут восстановлены, то в провинции за Евфратом у тебя ничего не останется.

17 ¶ The king sent this answer unto Rehum, the chancellor, and to Shimshai, the scribe, and to the rest of their companions that dwell in Samaria and to the rest of those of the other side of the river and to Cheenet.

Царь прислал такой ответ: Рехуму, царскому наместнику, Шимшаю, писарю, и прочим их друзьям, живущим в Самарии и в других местах провинции за Евфратом, – мир

18 T he letter which you sent unto us has been plainly read before me.

Письмо, что вы послали нам, было прочитано и переведено предо мной.

19 A nd I commanded, and search has been made, and it is found that this city of old time has made insurrection against kings and that rebellion and sedition have been made in her

По моему повелению был проведен поиск, и открылось, что этот город издревле восставал против царей и был очагом мятежей и волнений.

20 a nd that there have been mighty kings in Jerusalem, who have ruled over all that is beyond the river, and that toll, tribute, and custom, was paid unto them.

В Иерусалиме были могучие цари, правившие всей провинцией, что находится за Евфратом, и им платились налоги, дань и пошлины.

21 G ive ye now commandment to cause these men to cease and that this city not be built until another commandment shall be given from me.

Итак, отдайте приказ этим людям прекратить работу, чтобы они не отстраивали этот город, пока я не прикажу.

22 T ake heed now that ye not fail to do this; why should damage grow to the hurt of the kings?

Смотрите, не оставляйте этого дела без внимания. Зачем позволять этой угрозе расти до такой степени, чтобы царю был нанесен ущерб?

23 N ow when the copy of King Artaxerxes’ letter was read before Rehum, and Shimshai, the scribe, and their companions, they went up in haste to Jerusalem unto the Jews and made them to cease by force and power.

Как только копия письма царя Артаксеркса была прочитана Рехуму, писарю Шимшаю и их друзьям, они немедленно отправились к иудеям в Иерусалим и силой заставили их прекратить работу. Возобновление работ по строительству храма

24 T hen the work of the house of God which was at Jerusalem ceased. So it ceased unto the second year of the reign of Darius, king of Persia.

Так работа над Божьим домом в Иерусалиме остановилась и не возобновлялась до второго года правления Дария, царя Персии.
