1 ¶ Now it came to pass in the days when the judges governed that there was a famine in the land. And a certain man of Bethlehem of Judah went to sojourn in the fields of Moab, he, and his wife, and his two sons.

І сталось за часу, коли судді судили, то був голод у Краю. І пішов був чоловік з Юдиного Віфлеєму мешкати в моавських полях, він і жінка та двоє синів його.

2 A nd the name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife Naomi, and the name of his two sons Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites of Bethlehem of Judah. And they came into the fields of Moab and continued there.

А ім'я тому чоловікові Елімелех, а ім'я жінці його Ноомі; і ім'я двох синів його Махлон і Кілйон, ефратяни з Віфлеєму Юдиного. І прийшли вони на моавські поля, та й залишилися.

3 A nd Elimelech, Naomi’s husband, died, and she was left with her two sons,

І помер Елімелех, муж Ноомі, і зосталася вона та два їхні сини.

4 w ho took wives for themselves of the women of Moab; the name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other Ruth; and they dwelt there about ten years.

І взяли вони собі за жінок моавітянок, ім'я одній Орпа, а ім'я другій Рут. І сиділи вони там близько десяти літ.

5 A nd Mahlon and Chilion both died also; and the woman was left without her two sons and her husband.

І повмирали й вони обоє, Махлон та Кілйон. І позосталася та жінка по двох дітях своїх та по чоловікові своєму.

6 ¶ Then she arose with her daughters-in-law, to return from the fields of Moab, for she had heard in the field of Moab how the LORD had visited his people to give them bread.

І встала вона та невістки її, і вернулися з моавських піль, бо почула на моавському полі, що Господь згадав про народ Свій, даючи їм хліба.

7 T herefore she went forth out of the place where she had been and her two daughters-in-law with her; and they went on the way to return unto the land of Judah.

І вийшла вона з того місця, де була там, та обидві невістки з нею, та й пішли дорогою, щоб вернутися до Юдиного краю.

8 A nd Naomi said unto her two daughters-in-law, Go, return each of you to thy mother’s house; the LORD deal with you in mercy as ye have dealt with the dead and with me.

І сказала Ноомі до двох своїх невісток: Ідіть, верніться кожна до дому своєї матері. І нехай Господь зробить із вами милість, як ви зробили з померлими та зо мною.

9 T he LORD grant you that ye may find rest, each of you in the house of her husband. Then she kissed them, and they lifted up their voice and wept.

Нехай Господь дасть вам, і ви знайдете відпочинок кожна в домі свого мужа! І вона поцілувала їх, а вони підняли свій голос та плакали.

10 A nd they said unto her, Surely we will return with thee unto thy people.

І вони сказали до неї: Ні, з тобою ми вернемось до народу твого!

11 A nd Naomi replied, Go back, my daughters; why must ye go with me? Do I have more sons in my womb that they may be your husbands?

А Ноомі сказала: Вертайтеся, дочки мої, чого ви підете зо мною? Чи я маю ще в утробі своїй синів, а вони стануть вам за чоловіків?

12 T urn, my daughters, and go back, for I am too old to have a husband. Even if I should say, I have hope, if I should have a husband tonight and should also bear sons,

Верніться, дочки мої, ідіть, бо я занадто стара, щоб бути для мужа. А коли б я й сказала: Маю надію, і коли б цієї ночі була з мужем, і також породила синів,

13 s hould ye tarry for them until they are grown? Should ye stay without husbands because of them? No, my daughters, for I have greater bitterness than you because the hand of the LORD has come out against me.

чи ж ви чекали б їх, аж поки повиростають? Чи ж ви зв'язалися б з ними, щоб не бути замужем? Ні, дочки мої, бо мені значно гірше, як вам, бо Господня рука знайшла мене.

14 A nd they lifted up their voice and wept again, and Orpah kissed her mother-in-law, but Ruth cleaved unto her.

І підняли вони голос свій, і заплакали ще. І поцілувала Орпа свою свекруху, а Рут пригорнулася до неї.

15 A nd she said, Behold, thy sister-in-law has returned to her people and to her gods; return thou after thy sister-in-law.

І сказала Ноомі: Ось зовиця твоя вернулася до народу свого та до богів своїх, вернися й ти за зовицею своєю!

16 A nd Ruth said, Do not intreat me to leave thee or to return from following after thee, for wherever thou goest, I will go; and wherever thou shalt lodge, I will lodge; thy people shall be my people and thy God my God.

А Рут відказала: Не силуй мене, щоб я покинула тебе, щоб я вернулася від тебе, бо куди підеш ти, туди піду й я, а де житимеш ти, там житиму й я. Народ твій буде мій народ, а Бог твій мій Бог.

17 W here thou diest, I will die, and there will I be buried; let the LORD do so unto me and let him give unto me that only death shall part thee and me.

Де помреш ти, там помру й я, і там буду похована. Нехай Господь зробить мені так, і так нехай додасть, і тільки смерть розлучить мене з тобою.

18 W hen she saw that she was courageous to go with her, then she left off speaking to her.

І побачила Ноомі, що вона настоює йти за нею, і перестала вговорювати її.

19 ¶ So the two walked until they came to Bethlehem. And it came to pass, entering into Bethlehem, that all the city was moved because of them, and they said, Is this Naomi?

І пішли вони вдвох, аж прийшли до Віфлеєму. І сталося, коли вони входили до Віфлеєму, то зашуміло все місто про них, і говорили: Чи це Ноомі?

20 A nd she said unto them, Call me not Naomi, call me Mara; for the Almighty has dealt very bitterly with me.

А вона сказала їм: Не кличте мене: Ноомі, кличте мене: Мара, бо велику гіркоту зробив мені Всемогутній.

21 I went out full, and the LORD has brought me home again empty. Why then call ye me Naomi, seeing the LORD has testified against me, and the Almighty has afflicted me?

Я заможною пішла була, та порожньою вернув мене Господь. Чого кличете мене: Ноомі, коли Господь свідчив проти мене, а Всемогутній послав мені горе?

22 S o Naomi returned, and Ruth the Moabitess, her daughter-in-law, with her, who returned out of the fields of Moab, and they came to Bethlehem in the beginning of barley harvest.

І вернулася Ноомі та з нею моавітянка Рут, невістка її, що верталася з моавських піль. І прийшли вони до Віфлеєму на початку жнив ячменю.
