1 ¶ And it came to pass in those days, that the Philistines gathered their armies together for warfare, to fight against Israel. And Achish said unto David, Know for certain, that thou shalt go out with me to battle, thou and thy men.

І сталося тими днями, і зібрали филистимляни свої військові табори, щоб воювати з Ізраїлем. І сказав Ахіш до Давида: Щоб ти певно знав, що вийдеш зо мною в таборі, ти та люди твої.

2 A nd David said to Achish, Surely thou shalt know what thy slave can do. And Achish said to David, Therefore, I will make thee keeper of my head all the days.

І сказав Давид до Ахіша: Тому тепер ти пізнаєш, що зробить твій раб. А Ахіш сказав до Давида: Тому то зроблю тебе сторожем моєї голови по всі дні.

3 N ow Samuel was dead, and all Israel had lamented him, and buried him in Ramah in his own city. And Saul had removed the spiritists and the diviners out of the land.

А Самуїл тоді помер, і оплакував його ввесь Ізраїль, і поховали його в Рамі, у його місті. А Саул повиганяв із Краю ворожбитів та віщунів.

4 A nd the Philistines gathered themselves together and came and pitched camp in Shunem, and Saul gathered all Israel together, and they pitched camp in Gilboa.

І зібралися филистимляни, і прийшли, і таборували в Шунемі. А Саул зібрав усього Ізраїля, і таборували в Ґілбоа.

5 A nd when Saul saw the host of the Philistines, he was afraid, and his heart trembled greatly.

І побачив Саул филистимський табір та й злякався, і сильно затремтіло йому серце.

6 A nd Saul enquired of the LORD, but the LORD did not answer him by dreams nor by Urim nor by prophets.

І питався Саул Господа, та не відповів йому Господь ані в снах, ані урімом, ані пророками.

7 ¶ Then Saul said unto his slaves, Seek me a woman that is a spiritist that I may go to her and enquire of her. And his slaves said to him, Behold, there is a woman that is a spiritist at Endor.

І сказав Саул до своїх рабів: Пошукайте мені жінку ворожку, і я піду до неї, і запитаю її. І відповіли йому раби його: Ось жінка ворожка, в Ен-Дорі.

8 A nd Saul disguised himself and put on other clothing, and he went with two men, and they came to the woman by night; and he said, I pray thee, divine unto me by spiritism and bring me him up whom I shall name unto thee.

І перебрався Саул, і надів іншу одежу, і пішов він та двоє людей з ним, і прийшли до тієї жінки вночі. А він сказав: Поворожи мені, і виклич мені того, кого скажу тобі.

9 A nd the woman said unto him, Behold, thou knowest what Saul has done, how he has cut off the spiritists and the diviners out of the land; why then dost thou lay a snare for my life, to cause me to die?

А та жінка відповіла йому: Ти ж знаєш, що зробив Саул, що в Краю він вигубив ворожбитів та віщунів. І нащо ти важиш на мою душу, щоб забити її?

10 A nd Saul swore to her by the LORD, saying, As the LORD lives, no iniquity shall come upon thee for this thing.

І Саул присягнув їй Господом, говорячи: Як живий Господь, не спіткає тебе вина за цю річ!

11 T hen the woman said, Whom shall I bring up unto thee? And he said, Bring me up Samuel.

І сказала та жінка: Кого я викличу тобі? А він відказав: Самуїла виклич мені.

12 A nd when the woman saw Samuel, she cried with a loud voice; and the woman spoke to Saul, saying, Why hast thou deceived me? For thou art Saul.

І побачила та жінка Самуїла, та й крикнула сильним голосом! І сказала та жінка до Саула, говорячи: Нащо ти обманив мене, таж ти Саул!

13 A nd the king said unto her, Do not be afraid. What didst thou see? And the woman said unto Saul, I saw gods rising out of the land.

І сказав їй цар; Не бійся! Але що ти бачиш? А та жінка відказала Саулові: Я бачу ніби богів, що виходять із землі!

14 A nd he said unto her, What form is he of? And she said, An old man comes, and he is covered with a mantle. And Saul perceived that it was Samuel, and he stooped with his face to the ground and worshipped.

І він їй сказав: Який його вид? А та відказала: Виходить старий чоловік, зодягнений у довгу одежу. І Саул пізнав, що то Самуїл, і схилив своє обличчя до землі, та й уклонився.

15 ¶ And Samuel said to Saul, Why hast thou disquieted me, to bring me up? And Saul answered, I am sore distressed, for the Philistines make war against me, and God is departed from me and no longer answers me neither by prophets nor by dreams; therefore, I have called thee that thou may make known unto me what I shall do.

І сказав Самуїл до Саула: Нащо ти непокоїш мене, мене викликаючи? А Саул сказав: Дуже тяжко мені, филистимляни воюють зо мною, а Бог відступився від мене, і не відповідає мені вже ані через пророків, ані в снах. І покликав я тебе, щоб ти навчив мене, що я маю робити.

16 T hen Samuel said, Why then dost thou ask of me, seeing the LORD is departed from thee, and is become thy enemy?

І сказав Самуїл: І нащо ти питаєш мене, коли Господь відступився від тебе, і став із твоїм ворогом?

17 T he LORD, therefore, has done as he spoke by me! For the LORD has rent the kingdom out of thy hand and given it to thy neighbour, even to David.

І Господь зробив йому, як говорив був через мене, Господь узяв царство з твоєї руки, і дав його твоєму ближньому, Давидові.

18 B ecause thou didst not hearken unto the voice of the LORD nor execute his fierce wrath upon Amalek; therefore, the LORD has done this thing unto thee today.

Як ти не слухався Господнього голосу, і не виконав полум'яного гніву Його на Амалика, тому Господь зробив тобі цю річ цього дня.

19 A nd the LORD will also deliver Israel with thee into the hand of the Philistines, and tomorrow shalt thou and thy sons be with me; the LORD shall also deliver the camp of Israel into the hand of the Philistines.

І Господь віддав із тобою також Ізраїля до руки филистимлян. А взавтра ти та сини твої будете разом зо мною; також Ізраїлевого табора віддасть Господь до руки филистимлян.

20 ¶ Then Saul, as great as he was, fell suddenly to the earth and was sore afraid because of the words of Samuel; and there was no strength in him, for he had eaten no bread all that day nor all that night.

І Саул відразу повалився на землю всім своїм зростом, сильно він злякався Самуїлових слів, та й сили не було в ньому, бо не їв він хліба цілий той день та цілу ту ніч.

21 A nd the woman came unto Saul and saw that he was sore troubled and said unto him, Behold, thy handmaid has heard thy voice, and I have put my soul in my hand and have hearkened unto thy words which thou didst speak unto me.

І підійшла та жінка до Саула й побачила, що він дуже пригнічений. І сказала до нього: Ось невільниця твоя послухалася твого голосу, і наразила життя своє на небезпеку, бо я послухалася слів твоїх, що ти говорив мені.

22 N ow, therefore, I pray thee, hearken thou also unto the voice of thy handmaid and let me set a morsel of bread before thee; and eat, that thou may have strength, and go on thy way.

А тепер ти послухай також голосу своєї невільниці, я покладу перед тобою шматок хліба, а ти з'їж і буде в тобі сила, коли підеш дорогою.

23 B ut he refused and said, I will not eat. But his slaves, together with the woman, compelled him, and he hearkened unto their voice. So he arose from the ground and sat upon a bed.

А він відмовився й сказав: Не буду їсти! Та сильно просили його слуги його та тая жінка, і він послухався їхнього голосу. І звівся він із землі, і всівся на ліжку.

24 A nd the woman had a fat calf in the house, and she hastened and killed it and took flour and kneaded it and baked unleavened bread with it.

А та жінка мала в домі годоване теля, і поспішно зарізала його. І взяла вона муки й замісила, і спекла з того прісне.

25 A nd she brought it before Saul and before his slaves, and after they ate, they rose up and went away that night.

І принесла те перед Саула та перед слуг його, і вони їли. Потім устали й пішли тієї ночі.
