1 ¶ Now it came to pass after this that Nahash the king of the sons of Ammon, died, and his son reigned in his stead.

І сталося по тому, і помер Нахаш, цар аммонітський, а замість нього зацарював син його Ханун.

2 A nd David said, I will show mercy unto Hanun, the son of Nahash, because his father showed mercy to me. And David sent ambassadors to comfort him concerning his father. So the slaves of David came into the land of the sons of Ammon to Hanun, to comfort him.

І сказав Давид: Зроблю я милість Ханунові, Нахашевому синові, як батько його зробив був милість мені. І Давид послав послів, щоб потішити його за його батька. І прибули Давидові раби до аммонітського краю, до Хануна, щоб потішити його.

3 B ut the princes of the sons of Ammon said to Hanun, Does it seem unto thee that David honours thy father, that he has sent comforters unto thee? Are not his slaves come unto thee to search and to overthrow and to spy out the land?

А начальники аммонітян сказали до Хануна: Чи Давид шанує батька твого в очах твоїх тим, що послав тобі потішителів? Чи ж раби його прийшли до тебе не на те, щоб вивідати, і щоб знищити, і щоб вишпигувати край?

4 T hen Hanun took David’s slaves and shaved them, and cut off their garments in half, exposing their buttocks and sent them away.

І взяв Ханун Давидових рабів та й оголив їх, й обрізав їхню одежу в половині аж до сидіння, та й відпустив їх...

5 T hen they left, and it was told David how the men were served. And he sent to meet them, for the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said, Tarry at Jericho until your beards are grown and then return.

І пішли й донесли Давидові про тих мужів, а він послав навпроти них, бо ті мужі були дуже осоромлені. І цар їм сказав: Сидіть в Єрихоні, аж поки відросте вам борода, потім повернетесь.

6 ¶ And when the sons of Ammon saw that they had made themselves odious to David, Hanun and the sons of Ammon sent a thousand talents of silver to hire chariots and horsemen out of Syria of the rivers (Mesopotamia), and out of Syria of Maachah and out of Zobah.

І побачили аммонітяни, що вони зненавиджені в Давида. І послав Ханун та аммонітяни тисячу талантів срібла, щоб винайняти собі колесниці та верхівців з Араму двох річок і з Араму Маахи та з Цови.

7 S o they hired thirty-two thousand chariots, and the king of Maachah and his people, who came and pitched camp before Medeba. And the sons of Ammon gathered themselves together from their cities and came to battle.

І найняли вони собі тридцять і дві тисячі колесниць, і царя Маахи та народ його, і прийшли й таборували перед Медевою. Також аммонітяни зібралися зо своїх міст і прийшли до бою.

8 A nd when David heard of it, he sent Joab and all the host of the mighty men.

А коли Давид прочув про це, то послав Йоава та все військо лицарів.

9 A nd the sons of Ammon came out and put the battle in order before the gate of the city, and the kings that had come were by themselves in the field.

І повиходили аммонітяни, і вставилися до бою при вході до міста. А царі, що прийшли, вони самі були на полі.

10 N ow when Joab saw that the battle was set against him before and behind, he chose out of all the choice of Israel and put them in order against the Syrians.

І побачив Йоав, що бойовий фронт став на нього спереду та позаду, то вибрав зо всього вибраного в Ізраїлі, та й установив їх навпроти сиріян.

11 A nd he put the rest of the people into the hand of Abishai, his brother, putting them in order against the sons of Ammon.

А решту народу дав під руку свого брата Ав'шая, й їх установили навпроти аммонітян,

12 A nd he said, If the Syrians are too strong for me, then thou shalt save me; but if the sons of Ammon are too strong for thee, then I will save thee.

і сказав: Якщо сиріяни будуть сильніші від мене, то будеш мені на поміч, а якщо аммонітяни будуть сильніші від тебе, то допоможу тобі.

13 B e of good courage, and let us behave ourselves valiantly for our people and for the cities of our God; and let the LORD do that which is good in his sight.

Будь мужній, і стіймо міцно за народ наш та за міста нашого Бога, а Господь нехай зробить, що добре в очах Його!

14 S o Joab and the people that were with him drew near before the Syrians unto the battle; and they fled before him.

А коли Йоав та народ, що був із ним, підійшов перед сиріян до бою, то ті повтікали перед ним.

15 A nd when the sons of Ammon saw that the Syrians had fled, they likewise fled before Abishai, his brother, and entered into the city. Then Joab returned to Jerusalem.

А аммонітяни побачили, що повтікали сиріяни, то й вони повтікали перед братом його Ав'шаєм, і ввійшли до міста, а Йоав прибув до Єрусалиму.

16 A nd when the Syrians saw that they were smitten before Israel, they sent ambassadors and drew forth the Syrians that were beyond the river, whose captain was Shophach, the prince of the host of Hadarezer.

А коли побачили сиріяни, що вони побиті Ізраїлем, то послали послів, і привели сиріян, що з другого боку Річки, а Шофах, зверхник Гадад'езерового війська, був перед ними.

17 A nd when it was told David, he gathered all Israel and passed over the Jordan and came upon them and ordered his host against them. And when David had put his troops in order against the Syrians, they fought with him.

І було донесено Давидові, і він зібрав усього Ізраїля, і перейшов Йордан та прийшов до них, і вставився проти них. І встановився Давид на бій проти сиріян, і вони воювали з ним.

18 B ut the Syrians fled before Israel, and David slew of the Syrians those of seven thousand chariots, and forty thousand footmen; likewise he killed Shophach, the captain of the host.

І побігли сиріяни перед Ізраїлем, а Давид повбивав із сиріян сім тисяч колесниць та сорок тисяч пішого люду. І вбив він Шофаха, зверхника війська...

19 A nd when the slaves of Hadarezer saw that they were smitten before Israel, they made peace with David and became his servants; neither would the Syrians help the sons of Ammon any more.

А коли Гадад'езерові раби побачили, що вони побиті Ізраїлем, то замирилися з Давидом і служили йому. І сиріяни вже не хотіли допомагати аммонітянам.
