1 ¶ Come down, and sit in the dust, O virgin daughter of Babylon; sit on the ground, without a throne, O daughter of the Chaldeans; for thou shalt no longer be called tender and delicate.

«Scendi e siediti nella polvere, o vergine figlia di Babilonia. Siediti in terra, senza trono, o figlia dei Caldei, perché non sarai piú chiamata tenera e delicata.

2 T ake the millstones and grind meal; uncover thy locks, remove the shoes from thy feet, uncover the thigh, pass over the rivers.

Metti mano alla macina e macina la farina; rimuovi il tuo velo, alza lo strascico, scopriti la gamba e attraversa i fiumi.

3 T hy nakedness shall be uncovered and thy shame shall be seen; I will take vengeance, and I will not help any man.

La tua nudità sarà scoperta e si vedrà pure la tua vergogna; farò vendetta e nessuno intercederà».

4 A s for our redeemer, the LORD of the hosts is his name, the Holy One of Israel.

Il nostro Redentore, il cui nome è l'Eterno degli eserciti, è il Santo d'Israele.

5 S it, be silent, and go into darkness, O daughter of the Chaldeans; for thou shalt no longer be called, The lady of kingdoms.

«Siedi in silenzio e va' nelle tenebre, o figlia dei Caldei, perché non sarai piú chiamata la signora dei regni.

6 I was wroth with my people; I have profaned my inheritance and given them into thine hand; thou didst show them no mercy; upon the ancient thou hast very heavily laid thy yoke.

Mi sono adirato con il mio popolo, ho profanato la mia eredità e li ho dati in tuo potere, ma tu non hai usato loro alcuna pietà; sugli anziani facesti pesare il tuo giogo grandemente,

7 ¶ And thou didst say, I shall be a lady for ever. Until now thou hast not laid these things to heart, neither didst thou remember thy latter end.

e dicesti: Io sarò signora per sempre e cosí non hai riposto queste cose nel cuore e non hai considerato la fine di tutto questo.

8 T herefore now hear this, thou delicate one, that dost sit in confidence and say in thine heart, I am, and no one else beside me; I shall not sit as a widow, neither shall I be fatherless.

Or dunque ascolta questo, o voluttuosa, che dimori al sicuro e dici in cuor tuo: "Io, e nessun altro! Non rimarrò mai vedova né conoscerò la perdita dei figli".

9 B ut these two things shall come to thee in a moment in one day; the loss of thy fathers and widowhood: they shall come upon thee in their perfection for the multitude of thy sorceries and for the great abundance of thine enchantments.

Ma queste due cose ti avverranno in un momento, in uno stesso giorno: perdita dei figli e vedovanza; ti piomberanno addosso in piena misura, per la moltitudine dei tuoi sortilegi e la grande abbondanza dei tuoi incantesimi.

10 F or thou hast trusted in thy wickedness: thou hast said, No one sees me. Thy wisdom and thine own knowledge; it has deceived thee; for thou hast said in thine heart, I am, and no one else beside me.

Tu confidavi nella tua malizia e dicevi: "Nessuno mi vede". La tua sapienza e la tua conoscenza ti hanno sedotta, e dicevi in cuor tuo:

11 T herefore shall evil come upon thee; thou shalt not know from where it rises; and mischief shall fall upon thee; thou shalt not be able to put it off: and destruction shall come upon thee suddenly, which thou shalt not know.

"Io, e nessun altro". Perciò ti verrà addosso una sciagura, e non saprai da dove viene; ti piomberà addosso una calamità, che non potrai scongiurare con alcuna espiazione; ti cadrà improvvisamente addosso una rovina, che non hai previsto.

12 S tand now with thine enchantments and with the multitude of thy sorceries in which thou hast laboured from thy youth; if so be thou shalt be able to better thyself, if so be thou may prevail.

Rimani ora con i tuoi incantesimi e con la moltitudine dei tuoi sortilegi, nei quali ti sei affaticata fin dalla tua giovinezza. Forse ne trarrai qualche vantaggio, forse riuscirai a incutere paura.

13 T hou art wearied in the multitude of thy counsels. Let now those that contemplate the heavens, those that speculate regarding the stars, those that teach the courses of the moon, stand up and defend thee from these things that shall come upon thee.

Ti sei stancata per la moltitudine dei tuoi consiglieri; si levino dunque gli astrologi, quelli che osservano le stelle e che fanno pronostici ogni mese e ti salvino dalle cose che ti piomberanno addosso.

14 B ehold, they shall be as stubble; the fire shall burn them; they shall not deliver their lives from the hand of the flame; there shall not be a coal left to warm at, nor light to sit before it.

Ecco, essi saranno come stoppia; il fuoco li consumerà. Non salveranno se stessi dal potere della fiamma; non ci sarà brace a cui scaldarsi né fuoco davanti al quale sedersi.

15 T hus shall they be unto thee with whom thou hast laboured, even thy merchants, from thy youth: they shall wander each one to his own way; there shall be no one to save thee.

Cosí saranno quelli con i quali ti sei affaticata e con i quali hai trafficato fin dalla tua giovinezza. Ognuno andrà errando per conto suo, e nessuno ti salverà».
