1 ¶ Come down, and sit in the dust, O virgin daughter of Babylon; sit on the ground, without a throne, O daughter of the Chaldeans; for thou shalt no longer be called tender and delicate.

«انزِلِي وَاجلِسِي عَلَى التُّرابِ، يا بابِلُ العَذراءُ. اجلِسِي عَلَى الأرْضِ بِلا عَرْشٍ، يا ابنَةَ الكِلدانِيِّينَ. لأنَّكِ لَنْ تُدعَي فِيما بَعْدُ ‹الرَّقِيقَةَ المُتَرَفِّهَةَ.›

2 T ake the millstones and grind meal; uncover thy locks, remove the shoes from thy feet, uncover the thigh, pass over the rivers.

خُذِي حِجارَةَ الرَّحَى وَاطحَنِي قَمحاً لِعَمَلِ الدَّقِيقِ، أزِيلِي غِطاءَ وَجْهِكِ، ارفَعِي أطرافَ ثَوبِكِ وَاعبُرِي الأنهارَ.

3 T hy nakedness shall be uncovered and thy shame shall be seen; I will take vengeance, and I will not help any man.

سَتَنكَشِفُ عَورَتُكِ، وَخِزيُكِ سَيُرَى. سَأُعاقِبُكِ، وَلَنْ أترُكَ أحَداً بِلا عِقابٍ.»

4 A s for our redeemer, the LORD of the hosts is his name, the Holy One of Israel.

«يَقُولُ شَعبِي: ‹فادِينا، يهوه القَدِيرُ اسْمُهُ، هُوَ قُدُّوسُ إسْرائِيلَ.›

5 S it, be silent, and go into darkness, O daughter of the Chaldeans; for thou shalt no longer be called, The lady of kingdoms.

اجلِسِي صامِتَةً وَاذْهَبِي إلَى الظَّلامِ، يا ابنَةَ الكِلدانِيِّينَ. لأنَّكِ لَنْ تُدعَي فِيما بَعْدُ مَلِكَةَ المَمالِكِ.

6 I was wroth with my people; I have profaned my inheritance and given them into thine hand; thou didst show them no mercy; upon the ancient thou hast very heavily laid thy yoke.

«غَضِبتُ عَلَى شَعبِيَ، فَدَنَّسْتُ الَّذِينَ هُمْ لِي! ثُمَّ سَلَّمْتُكِ إيّاهُمْ. فَلَمْ تَرحَميهُمْ بَلْ وَضَعْتِ قُيُودَكِ حَتَّى عَلَى الكِبارِ.

7 ¶ And thou didst say, I shall be a lady for ever. Until now thou hast not laid these things to heart, neither didst thou remember thy latter end.

قُلْتِ: ‹سَأعِيشُ إلَى الأبَدِ مَلِكَةً أبَدِيَّةً.› لَمْ تُفَكِّرِي بِهَذِهِ الأُمُورِ، وَلَمْ تَتَأمَّلِي فِي عاقِبَتِها.

8 T herefore now hear this, thou delicate one, that dost sit in confidence and say in thine heart, I am, and no one else beside me; I shall not sit as a widow, neither shall I be fatherless.

لِذا اسْتَمِعِي أيَّتُها المُتَرَفِّهَةُ الجالِسَةُ فِي طُمَأنِينَةٍ. أيَّتُها القائِلَةُ لِنَفسِها: ‹أنا صاحِبَةُ السُّلطانِ، وَلَيسَ هُناكَ غَيرِي. لَنْ أتَرَمَّلَ، وَلَنْ أفقِدَ أولادِي.›

9 B ut these two things shall come to thee in a moment in one day; the loss of thy fathers and widowhood: they shall come upon thee in their perfection for the multitude of thy sorceries and for the great abundance of thine enchantments.

بَلْ يُصيبُكِ هَذانِ مَعاً فَجأةً وَفِي يَومٍ واحِدٍ، تَتَرَمَّلِينَ وَتَفقِدِينَ أولادَكِ. بِالرَّغمِ مِنْ كُلِّ سِحرِكِ، وَمِنْ قُوَّةِ تَعاوِيذِكِ العَظِيمَةِ.

10 F or thou hast trusted in thy wickedness: thou hast said, No one sees me. Thy wisdom and thine own knowledge; it has deceived thee; for thou hast said in thine heart, I am, and no one else beside me.

شَعَرتِ بِالأمانِ فِي شَرِّكِ، وَقُلْتِ: ‹لا أحَدَ يَرانِي.› أضَلَّتْكِ حِكمَتُكِ وَمَعرِفَتُكِ. قُلْتِ فِي قَلبِكِ: ‹أنا صاحِبَةُ السُّلطانِ، وَلَيسَ هُناكَ غَيرِي.›

11 T herefore shall evil come upon thee; thou shalt not know from where it rises; and mischief shall fall upon thee; thou shalt not be able to put it off: and destruction shall come upon thee suddenly, which thou shalt not know.

«لِذَلِكَ سَتَأتِي المَصائِبُ عَلَيكِ، وَلَنْ تَعرِفِي مَتَى سَتَحدُثُ. سَيَقَعُ الدَّمارُ عَلَيكِ، وَلَنْ تَقدِرِي أنْ تَصُدِّيهِ. وَسَتَأتِي الكارِثَةُ عَلَيكِ فَجأةً مِنْ دُونِ أنْ تَعرِفِي أنَّها آتِيَةٌ.

12 S tand now with thine enchantments and with the multitude of thy sorceries in which thou hast laboured from thy youth; if so be thou shalt be able to better thyself, if so be thou may prevail.

اسْتَمِرِّي فِي تَعاوِيذِكِ وَسِحرِكِ، فَقَدِ انشَغَلتِ بِذَلِكَ مُنذُ صِباكِ. فَلَرُبَّما تَنجَحِينَ! وَرُبَّما تُخِيفِينَ أحَداً.

13 T hou art wearied in the multitude of thy counsels. Let now those that contemplate the heavens, those that speculate regarding the stars, those that teach the courses of the moon, stand up and defend thee from these things that shall come upon thee.

«أنتِ مُنهَكَةٌ مِنْ كُلِّ اسْتِشاراتِكِ. لِيَقِفِ أُولَئِكَ الَّذِينَ يَدرُسُونَ الأفلاكَ وَيُخَلِّصُوكِ. وَلِيَقِفِ أُولَئِكَ الَّذِينَ يُراقِبُونَ النُّجُومَ وَاوائِلِ الشُّهُورِ، وَيُخبِرُوكِ بِما سَيَحدُثُ لَكِ.

14 B ehold, they shall be as stubble; the fire shall burn them; they shall not deliver their lives from the hand of the flame; there shall not be a coal left to warm at, nor light to sit before it.

إنَّهُمْ مِثلُ القَشِّ الَّذِي تُحرِقُهُ النّارُ. لا يَستَطِيعُونَ أنْ يُخَلِّصُوا أنفُسَهُمْ مِنْ قُوَّةِ اللَّهِيبِ. لَيسَ هَذا جَمراً لِتَستَدفِئِي بِهِ، وَلا ناراً لِتَجلِسِي أمامَها.

15 T hus shall they be unto thee with whom thou hast laboured, even thy merchants, from thy youth: they shall wander each one to his own way; there shall be no one to save thee.

هَؤلاءِ هُمُ الَّذِينَ تَعِبتِ عَلَيهِمْ، شُرَكاؤُكِ فِي التِّجارَةِ مُنذُ صِباكِ. كُلُّ واحِدٍ مِنهُمْ ضَلَّ طَرِيقَهُ، وَلا يُوجَدُ مَنْ يُخَلِّصُكِ.»
