1 ¶ And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying,

وَقالَ اللهُ لِمُوسَى:

2 S end thou men that they may spy out the land of Canaan, which I give unto the sons of Israel; of every tribe of their fathers ye shall send a man, each one a prince among them.

«أرسِلْ رِجالاً لِيَستَكشِفُوا أرْضَ كَنعانَ الَّتِي سَأُعطِيها لِبَني إسْرائِيلَ. أرسِلُوا رَجُلاً مِنْ كُلِّ عَشِيرَةٍ بِحَيثُ يَكُونُ مِنْ قادَةِ قَبِيلَتِهِ.»

3 A nd Moses by the commandment of the LORD sent them from the wilderness of Paran; all those men were princes of the sons of Israel.

فَأرسَلَهُمْ مُوسَى مِنْ بَرِّيَّةِ فارانَ بِحَسَبِ أمرِ اللهِ. وَكانَ هَؤُلاءِ الرِّجالُ مِنْ قادَةِ بَني إسْرائِيلَ.

4 A nd these were their names: of the tribe of Reuben, Shammua, the son of Zaccur.

وَهَذِهِ هِيَ أسماؤُهُمْ: مِنْ قَبِيلَةِ رَأُوبَيْنَ شَمُّوعُ بْنُ زَكُّورَ.

5 O f the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat, the son of Hori.

وَمِنْ قَبِيلَةِ شِمْعُونَ شافاطُ بْنُ حُورِي.

6 O f the tribe of Judah, Caleb, the son of Jephunneh.

وَمِنْ قَبِيلَةِ يَهُوذا كالِبُ بْنُ يَفُنَّةَ.

7 O f the tribe of Issachar, Igal, the son of Joseph.

وَمِنْ قَبِيلَةِ يسّاكِرَ يَجْآلُ بنُ يُوسُفَ.

8 O f the tribe of Ephraim, Hosea, the son of Nun.

وَمِنْ قَبِيلَةِ أفْرايِمَ هُوشَعُ بْنُ نُونَ.

9 O f the tribe of Benjamin, Palti, the son of Raphu.

وَمِنْ قَبِيلَةِ بَنْيامِيْنَ فَلْطِي بْنُ رافُو.

10 O f the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel, the son of Sodi.

وَمِنْ قَبِيلَةِ زَبُولُونَ جَدِّيئِيلُ بْنُ سُودِي.

11 O f the tribe of Joseph, namely, of the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi, the son of Susi.

وَمِنْ عَشِيرَةِ يُوسُفَ، أي قَبِيلَةِ مَنَسَّى جِدِّي بْنُ سُوسِي.

12 O f the tribe of Dan, Ammiel, the son of Gemalli.

وَمِنْ قَبِيلَةِ دانَ عَمِّيئِيلُ بْنُ جَمَلِّي.

13 O f the tribe of Asher, Sethur, the son of Michael.

وَمِنْ قَبِيلَةِ أشِيرَ سَتُورُ بْنُ مِيخائِيلَ.

14 O f the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi, the son of Vophsi.

وَمِنْ قَبِيلَةِ نَفْتالِي نَحْبِي بْنُ وَفْسِي.

15 O f the tribe of Gad, Geuel, the son of Machi.

وَمِنْ قَبِيلَةِ جادَ جَأُوئِيلُ بْنُ ماكي.

16 T hese are the names of the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land. And Moses called Hosea, the son of Nun, Joshua.

هَذِهِ هِيَ أسْماءُ الرِّجالِ الَّذِينَ أرسَلَهُمْ مُوسَى لِيَتَجَسَّسُوا الأرْضَ وَيَستَكشِفُوها. أمَّا هُوشَعُ بْنُ نُونَ فَدَعاهُ مُوسَى يَشُوعَ.

17 A nd Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan and said unto them, Go up this way towards the Negev and go up into the mountain

وَحِينَ أرسَلَهُمْ مُوسَى لاستِكشافِ أرْضِ كَنعانَ، قالَ لَهُمْ: «اصْعَدُوا إلَى النَّقَبِ ثُمَّ إلَى مِنْطَقَةِ التِّلالِ.

18 a nd see the land, what it is, and the people that dwell therein, whether they are strong or weak, few or many,

تَفَحَّصُوا طَبِيعَةَ الأرْضِ، وَالسّاكِنِينَ فِيها. أهُمْ أقوِياءُ أمْ ضُعَفاءُ، قَلِيلونَ أمْ كَثِيرُونَ؟

19 a nd how the land is that they dwell in, whether it is good or bad, and what cities there are that they dwell in, whether in tents, or in strong holds,

تَفَحَّصُوا طَبِيعَةَ الأرْضِ الَّتِي يَعِيشُونَ فِيها، إنْ كانَتْ حَسَنَةً أمْ رَدِيئَةً، وَهَلْ هِيَ مُخَيَّماتٌ مَفتُوحَةٌ أمْ حُصُونٌ تُحِيطُها أسوارٌ.

20 A nd what the land is, whether it is fertile or sterile, whether there are trees therein, or not. And be ye of good courage and bring of the fruit of the land. Now the time was the time of the firstripe grapes.

وَافْحَصُوا الأرْضَ إنْ كانَتْ خَصِبَةً أمْ فَقِيرَةً. وَإنْ كانَ هُناكَ أشجارٌ أوْ لا. وَاحْرِصُوا أنْ تُحضِرُوا مِنْ ثَمَرِ الأرْضِ.» فَقَدْ كانَ ذَلِكَ الوَقتُ بِدايَةَ مَوسِمِ العِنَبِ.

21 ¶ So they went up and spied out the land from the wilderness of Zin unto Rehob, as men come to Hamath.

فَذَهَبُوا وَاستَكشَفُوا الأرْضَ مِنْ بَرِّيَّةِ صِينَ إلَى رَحُوبَ قُربَ مَدخَلِ حَماةَ.

22 A nd they ascended by the Negev and came unto Hebron, where Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the sons of Anak, were. (Now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)

فَذَهَبُوا إلَى النَّقَبِ، وَأتَوْا إلَى حَبْرُونَ. وَكانَتْ قَبائِلُ أخِيمانَ وَشِيشايَ وَتَلْمايَ تَسكُنُ هُناكَ – وَهُمْ مِنْ نَسلِ عَناقَ. وَكانَتْ مَدِينَةُ حَبرُونَ قَدْ بُنِيَتْ قَبلَ مَدِينَةِ صُوعَنَ فِي مِصرَ بِسَبعِ سَنَواتٍ.

23 A nd they came unto the brook of Eshcol, and from there they cut down a branch with one cluster of grapes, and they bore it between two upon a staff; and they brought of the pomegranates and of the figs.

ثُمَّ أتَوا إلَى وادِي أشكُولَ. وَمِنْ هُناكَ قَطَعُوا غُصناً فِيهِ عُنقُودُ عِنَبٍ واحِدٍ، حَمَلَهُ رَجُلانِ بِعَصاً فِيما بَينَهما! كَما حَمَلُوا مَعَهُمْ بَعضَ العِنَبِ وَالتِّينِ أيضاً.

24 T he place was called the brook Eshcol because of the cluster of grapes which the sons of Israel cut down from there.

وَدُعِيَ ذَلِكَ المُكانُ بِوادِي أشكُولَ بِسَبَبِ العُنقُودِ الَّذِي قَطَعَهُ بَنو إسْرائِيلَ مِنْ هُناكَ.

25 A nd they returned from searching of the land after forty days.

وَرَجِعَ الرِّجالُ مِنِ استِكشافِ الأرْضِ بَعدَ أربَعِينَ يَوماً.

26 ¶ And they went and came to Moses and to Aaron and to all the congregation of the sons of Israel, unto the wilderness of Paran to Kadesh and brought back word unto them and unto all the congregation and showed them the fruit of the land.

وَأتَوا إلَى مُوسَى وَهارُونَ وَكُلِّ بَني إسْرائِيلَ فِي بَرِّيَّةِ فارانَ فِي قادِشَ. وَقَدَّمُوا لَهُما وَلِكُلِّ الشَّعبِ تَقرِيراً عَمّا رَأُوهُ، وَأرُوهُمْ ثَمَرَ الأرْضِ.

27 A nd they told him and said, We came unto the land where thou didst send us, and surely it flows with milk and honey; and this is the fruit of it.

فَقالُوا لِمُوسَى: «قَدْ ذَهَبْنا إلَى الأرْضِ الَّتِي أرسَلْتَنا إلَيها. هِيَ حَقّاً أرْضٌ تَفيِضُ لَبَناً وَعَسَلاً. وَهَذا ثَمَرُها.

28 N evertheless the people are strong that dwell in that land, and the cities are very great and strong; and moreover we saw the sons of Anak there.

لَكِنَّ الشَّعبَ الَّذِي يَعِيشُ فِي الأرْضِ قَوِيٌّ، وَمُدُنُهُمْ مُحَصَّنَةٌ وَضَخمَةٌ جِدّاً. كَما أنَّنا رَأينا مِنْ نَسلِ عَناقَ هُناكَ.

29 A malek dwells in the land of the Negev, and the Hittite and the Jebusite and the Amorite dwell in the mountains, and the Canaanite dwells by the sea and by the side of the Jordan.

وَالعَمالِقَةُ يَسكُنُونَ أرْضَ النَّقَبِ، وَالحِثِّيُّونَ وَاليَبُوسِيُّونَ وَالأمُّورِيُّونَ يَسكُنُونَ فِي التِّلالِ. وَيَسكُنُ الكَنعانِيُّونَ قُربَ البَحرِ وَعَلَى طُولِ نَهرِ الأردُنِّ.»

30 T hen Caleb stilled the people before Moses, and said, Let us go up at once and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it.

حِينَئِذٍ، أسْكَتَ كالِبُ الشَّعبَ الَّذِيَ بِقُربِ مُوسَى، وَقالَ: «سَنَصعَدُ وَنَمتَلِكُ الأرْضَ، لأنَّنا قَادِرُونَ عَلَى أنْ نَغزُوَها وَنَمتَلِكَها.»

31 B ut the men that went up with him said, We are not able to go up against that people, for they are stronger than we.

لَكِنَّ الرِّجالَ الَّذِينَ ذَهَبُوا مَعَهُ قالُوا: «لَسنا قادِرِينَ عَلَى أنْ نَهزِمَ ذَلِكَ الشَّعبَ لأنَّهُمْ أقوَى مِنّا.»

32 A nd they brought up an evil report of the land which they had spied out unto the sons of Israel, saying, The land, through which we have gone through to spy it out, is a land that eats up its inhabitants; and all the people that we saw in it are men of a great stature.

وَهَكَذا ثَبَّطُوا بِكَلامِهِمْ هَذا عَزِيمَةَ بَني إسْرائِيلَ بِشأنِ الأرْضِ الَّتِي استَكشَفُوها. وَقالُوا: «الأرْضُ الَّتِي سافَرْنا عَبْرَها لاسْتِكشافِها هِيَ أرْضٌ تُدَمِّرُ الشَّعبَ الَّذِي يَعِيشُ فِيها. وَكُلُّ النّاسِ الَّذِينَ رَأيناهُمْ فِيها مِنَ العَمالِقَةِ!

33 A nd there we saw giants, the sons of Anak, of the race of the giants; and we were in our own sight as locusts, and so we were in their sight.

وَقَدْ رَأينا هُناكَ الجَبابِرَةَ – جاءَ نَسلُ عَناقَ مِنَ الجَبابِرَةِ – فَشَعَرْنا وَكَأنَّنا جَرادٌ أمامَهُمْ! وَهَكَذا كُنّا بِالفِعلِ فِي نَظَرِهِمْ!»
