1 O DIO delle vendette, o Eterno DIO delle vendette, risplendi.

¶ O LORD God, to whom vengeance belongs; O God, to whom vengeance belongs, show thyself.

2 L evati, o giudice della terra e rendi la retribuzione ai superbi.

Lift up thyself, thou judge of the earth: render a reward to the proud.

3 F ino a quando gli empi, o Eterno, fino a quando gli empi trionferanno?

LORD, how long shall the wicked, how long shall the wicked triumph?

4 V omitano parole e fanno discorsi insolenti; tutti gli operatori d'iniquità parlano con arroganza.

How long shall they utter and speak hard things? and all the workers of iniquity boast themselves?

5 E ssi calpestano il tuo popolo, o Eterno, e opprimono la tua eredità.

They break in pieces thy people, O LORD, and afflict thy heritage.

6 U ccidono la vedova e il forestiero, e mettono a morte gli orfani,

They slay the widow and the stranger and murder the fatherless.

7 e dicono: «L'Eterno non vede, il DIO di Giacobbe non intende».

Yet they say, JAH shall not see, neither shall the God of Jacob regard it.

8 C ercate di capire, o insensati fra il popolo, e voi sciocchi, quando diventerete savi

Understand, ye carnal ones among the people, and, ye fools, when will ye be wise?

9 C olui che ha piantato l'orecchio, non ode egli? Colui che ha formato l'occhio, non vede egli?

He that planted the ear, shall he not hear? he that formed the eye, shall he not see?

10 C olui che corregge le nazioni non le punirà, lui che insegna all'uomo conoscenza?

He that chastens the Gentiles, shall he not correct? he that teaches man knowledge, shall not he know?

11 L 'Eterno conosce i pensieri dell'uomo e sa che sono vani.

The LORD knows the thoughts of man, that they are vanity.

12 B eato l'uomo che tu correggi, o Eterno, e che istruisci con la tua legge,

¶ Blessed is the man whom thou dost chasten, O JAH, and teach him out of thy law,

13 p er dargli riposo nei giorni dell'avversità, finché è scavata la fossa per l'empio.

to cause him to rest in the days of adversity, until the pit is dug for the wicked.

14 P oiché l'Eterno non ripudierà il suo popolo e non abbandonerà la sua eredità.

For the LORD will not cast off his people, neither will he forsake his inheritance.

15 I l giudizio sarà di nuovo fondato sulla giustizia, e tutti i retti di cuore lo seguiranno.

But the judgment shall be returned unto righteousness, and all the upright in heart shall follow it.

16 C hi si leverà per me contro i malvagi? Chi si metterà dalla mia parte contro gli operatori d'iniquità?

Who will rise up for me against the evildoers? or who will stand up for me against the workers of iniquity?

17 S e l'Eterno non fosse venuto in mio aiuto, sarei presto finito nel luogo del silenzio.

Unless the LORD had been my help, my soul would have quickly dwelt with the dead.

18 Q uando ho detto «Il mio piede vacilla», la tua benignità, o Eterno, mi ha sostenuto.

When I said, My foot slips, thy mercy, O LORD, held me up.

19 Q uando un gran numero di preoccupazioni mi assillavano, le tue consolazioni mi rincuoravano.

In the multitude of my thoughts within me, thy comforts delight my soul.

20 S arà forse tuo alleato il tribunale iniquo, che trama angherie in nome della legge?

Shall the throne of iniquity have fellowship with thee, who creates toil under the guise of law?

21 S i radunano assieme contro il giusto e condannano il sangue innocente.

They gather themselves together as an army against the life of the righteous and condemn the innocent blood.

22 M a l'Eterno è la mia fortezza e il mio DIO è la rocca in cui mi rifugio.

But the LORD is my refuge, and my God is the rock of my trust.

23 E gli farà ricadere su di essi la loro malvagità e li farà perire per la loro iniquità; l'Eterno, il nostro DIO, li distruggerà.

And he shall bring upon them their own iniquity and shall cut them off in their own wickedness; yea, the LORD our God shall cut them off.
