1 A llora Zofar di Naamath rispose e disse:

¶ Then Zophar, the Naamathite, answered and said,

2 « Una tale moltitudine di parole rimarrà senza risposta? Dovrà un uomo di tante parole aver ragione?

Should not the multitude of words be answered? And should a man full of talk be justified?

3 L e tue chiacchiere faranno tacere la gente? Ti farai beffe senza che alcuno ti svergogni?

Should thy lies make men be silent? Shalt thou mock, and shall no man make thee ashamed?

4 T u hai detto: "La mia dottrina è pura e sono ineccepibile davanti a te"

For thou hast said, My doctrine is pure, and I am clean before thine eyes.

5 M a se Dio volesse parlare e aprisse le sue labbra contro di te,

But oh, that God would speak and open his lips against thee

6 p er rivelarti i segreti della sapienza perché la vera sapienza è multiforme, allora sapresti che Dio dimentica parte della tua colpa.

and that he would show thee the secrets of wisdom! For thou dost deserve double according to sound wisdom; and thou dost know that God has forgotten thee because of thine iniquity.

7 P uoi tu scandagliare le profondità di Dio? Puoi tu penetrare la perfezione dell'Onnipotente?

¶ Canst thou by searching find out God? Canst thou come unto the perfection of the Almighty?

8 S ono piú alte del cielo: che cosa puoi fare? Sono piú profonde dello Sceol: che cosa puoi sapere?

It is higher than the heavens; what canst thou do? It is deeper than Sheol; how canst thou know it?

9 L a loro misura è piú lunga della terra e piú larga del mare.

The measure of it is longer than the earth and broader than the sea.

10 S e Dio passa, imprigiona e riunisce in giudizio, chi glielo può impedire?

If he cuts off, or shuts up, or gathers together, then who can hinder him?

11 P oiché egli conosce gli uomini falsi; vede l'iniquità e l'osserva.

For he knows the vain men; and he sees the iniquity; will he not then understand it?

12 L 'uomo stolto diventerà savio, quando il puledro di un onagro diventerà uomo.

The vain man shall make himself understood, though man is born like a wild ass’s colt.

13 S e tu disponi il tuo cuore e stendi verso di lui le tue mani

¶ If thou would prepare thine heart and stretch out thine hands toward him;

14 s e allontani l'iniquità che è nelle tue mani e non permetti alla perversità di abitare nelle tue tende,

if there is any iniquity in thy hand and thou dost put it far away and dost not consent that wickedness dwell in thy habitations,

15 a llora potrai alzare la tua fronte senza macchia, starai saldo e non avrai paura,

then shalt thou lift up thy face without spot; thou shalt be strongly established and shalt not fear;

16 p erché dimenticherai i tuoi affanni li ricorderai come acqua passata;

and thou shalt forget thy misery and remember it as waters that passed away;

17 l a tua vita sarà piú luminosa del mezzodí, anche l'oscurità per te sarebbe come il mattino.

and thine age shall be clearer than the noonday; thou shalt shine forth, thou shalt be as the morning.

18 S arai sicuro perché c'è speranza; ti guarderai attorno e riposerai al sicuro.

And thou shalt trust because there is hope; yea, thou shalt dig and sleep in safety;

19 T i coricherai senza che nessuno ti spaventi, e molti cercheranno il tuo favore.

thou shalt lie down, and no one shall make thee afraid; and many shall make requests unto thee.

20 M a gli occhi degli empi verranno meno; ogni scampo verrà loro a mancare, e la loro speranza sarà l'ultimo respiro».

But the eyes of the wicked shall consume themselves, and they shall have no refuge, and their hope shall be agony of the soul.
