1 R adunatevi, radunatevi assieme, o nazione spudorata,

¶ Search yourselves and one another, O unfriendly people;

2 p rima che il decreto abbia effetto, prima che il giorno passi come la pula, prima che venga su di voi l'ardente ira dell'Eterno, prima che venga su di voi il giorno dell'ira dell'Eterno.

before the decree is executed, before the day passes as the chaff, before the fierce anger of the LORD comes upon you, before the day of the LORD’s anger comes upon you.

3 C ercate l'Eterno voi tutti, umili della terra che praticate la sua legge. Cercate la giustizia, cercate l'umiltà. Forse sarete nascosti nel giorno dell'ira dell'Eterno.

Seek ye the LORD, all ye humble of the earth, who have wrought his judgment; seek righteousness, seek humility: it may be ye shall be kept in the day of the LORD’s anger.

4 P oiché Gaza sarà abbandonata e Ashkelon diventerà una desolazione scacceranno Ashdod con violenza in pieno mezzogiorno ed Ekron sarà sradicata.

¶ For Gaza shall be forsaken, and Ashkelon a desolation: they shall spoil Ashdod at the noon day, and Ekron shall be rooted up.

5 G uai agli abitanti della costa del mare, alla nazione dei Kerethei! La parola dell'Eterno è contro di te, o Canaan, paese dei Filistei: «Io ti distruggerò e non rimarrà più nessuno».

Woe unto the inhabitants of the sea coast, the people of the Cherethites! the word of the LORD is against you; O Canaan, the land of the Palestinians, I will cause thee to be destroyed until there shall be no inhabitant left.

6 C osí la costa del mare sarà tutta pascoli con dimore per pastori e recinti di greggi.

And the sea coast shall be for dwellings and cottages for pastors, and sheepfolds.

7 L a costa apparterrà al residuo della casa di Giuda, in quei luoghi pascoleranno le greggi; a sera riposeranno nelle case di Ashkelon perché l'Eterno il loro DIO, li visiterà e li ricondurrà dalla cattività,

And the coast shall be for the remnant of the house of Judah; they shall feed thereupon: in the houses of Ashkelon they shall sleep for the night; for the LORD their God shall visit them and return their captives.

8 « Ho udito il disprezzo di Moab e gli oltraggi dei figli di Ammon, con i quali hanno insultato il mio popolo e si sono ingranditi a danno del loro territorio.

¶ I have heard the reproaches of Moab, and the revilings of the sons of Ammon, by which they have dishonoured my people and magnified themselves over their border.

9 P erciò com'è vero che io vivo», dice l'Eterno degli eserciti il DIO d'Israele, «certamente Moab sarà come Sodoma e i figli di Ammon come Gomorra, un luogo occupato dalle ortiche e saline, una desolazione per sempre. Il resto del mio popolo li saccheggerà e il residuo della mia nazione li possederà.

Therefore as I live, said the LORD of the hosts, the God of Israel, Surely Moab shall be as Sodom and the sons of Ammon as Gomorrah, even a field of nettles and saltpits and a perpetual desolation; the remnant of my people shall spoil them, and the remnant of my Gentiles shall inherit them.

10 Q uesto avverrà loro per la loro superbia, perché hanno insultato e trattato con arroganza a il popolo dell'Eterno degli eserciti.

This shall come upon them for their pride because they have reproached and magnified themselves against the people of the LORD of the hosts.

11 L 'Eterno sarà terribile contro di loro, perché farà piegare tutti gli dèi della terra, e ciascuno lo adorerà dal suo luogo, sí, tutte le isole delle nazioni.

The LORD shall be terrible against them for he will weaken all the gods of the earth; and each one from his place shall worship him, even all the isles of the Gentiles.

12 A nche voi, Etiopi, sarete uccisi dalla mia spada».

¶ Ye Ethiopians also, ye shall be slain by my sword.

13 E gli stenderà la mano contro il nord, distruggerà l'Assiria e farà di Ninive una desolazione, un luogo arido come il deserto.

And he will stretch out his hand over the north wind and destroy Assyria and will make Nineveh a desolation and dry like a wilderness.

14 N el suo mezzo si accovacceranno le greggi, tutti gli animali delle nazioni; tanto il pellicano che l'airone passeranno la notte sui capitelli delle sue colonne; la loro voce risuonerà alle finestre, la desolazione sarà sulle soglie, perché distruggerà il rivestimento con pannelli di cedro.

And flocks shall lie down in the midst of her, all the beasts of the Gentiles; both the cormorant and the bittern shall lodge in her thresholds; their voice shall sing in the windows; desolation shall be in the gates: for her cedar work shall be uncovered.

15 Q uesta è la città gaudente che se ne stava al sicuro e diceva in cuor suo: «Io e nessun altro fuori di me». Come mai è diventata una desolazione, un luogo dove gli animali si accovacciano? Chiunque le passerà vicino fischierà e agiterà la mano.

This is the rejoicing city that dwelt carelessly, that said in her heart, I am, and there is none beside me: how is she become a desolation, a place for beasts to lie down in! anyone that passes by her shall hiss and wag his hand.
