1 L a parola che fu rivolta a Geremia da parte dell'Eterno, dicendo:

¶ The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying,

2 « Cosí dice l'Eterno, il DIO d'Israele: Scriviti in un libro tutte le parole che ti ho detto

Thus hath the LORD God of Israel spoken, saying, Write thee all the words that I have spoken unto thee in a book.

3 p erché, ecco, i giorni vengono, dice l'Eterno, nei quali io farò ritornare dalla cattività il mio popolo d'Israele e di Giuda, dice l'Eterno, e li ricondurrò nel paese che diedi ai loro padri, ed essi lo possederanno».

For, Behold, the days come, said the LORD, that I will turn the captivity of my people Israel and Judah, said the LORD, and I will cause them to return to the land that I gave to their fathers, and they shall possess it.

4 Q ueste sono le parole che l'Eterno pronunciò riguardo ad Israele e a Giuda:

And these are the words that the LORD spoke concerning Israel and concerning Judah.

5 « Cosí dice l'Eterno: Noi abbiamo udito un grido di terrore, di spavento e non di pace.

For thus hath the LORD said; We have heard a voice of trembling, of terror, and not of peace.

6 I nformatevi e vedete se un maschio può partorire. Perché dunque vedo tutti gli uomini con le mani sui loro lombi, come una donna che sta per partorire? Perché tutte le facce sono diventate pallide?

Ask now, and see whether the man doth travail with child? for I have seen that every man has his hands on his loins, as a woman in travail; and all faces have turned pale.

7 A himè, perché quel giorno è grande; non ve ne fu mai alcuno simile; sarà un tempo di angoscia per Giacobbe, ma egli ne sarà salvato.

Alas! for that day is great, so that none is like it: it is even the time of Jacob’s trouble; but he shall be saved out of it.

8 I n quel giorno avverrà», dice l'Eterno degli eserciti, «che io spezzerò il suo giogo dal tuo collo e romperò i tuoi legami; gli stranieri non ti faranno piú loro schiavo.

For it shall come to pass in that day, saith the LORD of the hosts, that I will break his yoke from off thy neck, and will burst thy bonds, and strangers shall no longer place him in servitude,

9 M a quei d'Israele serviranno l'Eterno, il loro DIO, e Davide, loro re, che io susciterò per loro.

but they shall serve the LORD their God, and David their king, whom I will raise up unto them.

10 T u dunque, o mio servo Giacobbe, non temere», dice l'Eterno; «non spaventarti o Israele, perché, ecco, io ti salverò dal lontano paese e la tua discendenza dal paese della sua cattività. Giacobbe ritornerà, avrà riposo, starà tranquillo e nessuno piú lo spaventerà.

¶ Therefore fear thou not, O my slave Jacob, saith the LORD; neither be dismayed, O Israel: for, behold, I am he that saves thee from afar, and thy seed from the land of their captivity; and Jacob shall turn, and shall rest, and be quiet, and there shall be no one left to scatter him.

11 P oiché io sono con te», dice l'Eterno, «per salvarti. Io sterminerò tutte le nazioni in mezzo alle quali ti ho disperso; tuttavia non sterminerò te, ma ti castigherò con giustizia e non ti lascerò del tutto impunito».

For I shall be with thee, saith the LORD, to save thee; and I shall make a full end in all Gentiles among whom I scattered thee, yet I will not make a full end of thee: but I will chastise thee with judgment and will not cut thee off altogether.

12 C osí dice l'Eterno: «Il tuo male è incurabile, la tua ferita è grave.

For thus hath the LORD said, Thy breach is incurable, and thy sore is grievous.

13 N essuno difende la tua causa; cosí non c'è nessuna medicina per la tua ferita né guarigione per te.

There is no one to judge thy cause unto health; there is no cure, nor are there any medicines for thee.

14 T utti i tuoi amanti ti hanno dimenticata, non si prendono cura di te, perché ti ho colpito con percossa da nemico, con un castigo di uno crudele, per la grandezza della tua iniquità, per la moltitudine dei tuoi peccati.

All thy lovers have forgotten thee; they do not seek thee; for I have wounded thee with the wound of an enemy, with the whip of a cruel one, for the multitude of thine iniquity; because thy sins were increased.

15 P erché gridi a causa del tuo male? Il tuo dolore è insanabile. Io ti ho fatto queste cose per la grandezza della tua iniquità, per la moltitudine dei tuoi peccati.

Why dost thou cry out for thine affliction? thy sorrow is incurable for the greatness of thine iniquity; because thy sins were increased, I have done these things unto thee.

16 M a tutti quelli che ti divorano saranno divorati, tutti i tuoi nemici, tutti quanti, andranno in cattività; quelli che ti saccheggiano saranno abbandonati al saccheggio e i tuoi depredatori li lascerò essere depredati.

Therefore all those that devour thee shall be devoured; and all those that afflict thee, every one of them, shall go into captivity; and those that trampled upon thee shall be trodden down, and all that prey upon thee I will give for a prey.

17 S í, io ti ridarò salute e ti guarirò dalle tue ferite», dice l'Eterno, «perché ti chiamano "La scacciata" dicendo: "Questa è Sion di cui nessuno si prende cura"».

For I will cause healing to come for thee, and I will heal thee of thy wounds, said the LORD; because they called thee an Outcast, saying, This is Zion, whom no man seeks after.

18 C osí dice l'Eterno: «Ecco, io farò ritornare dalla cattività le tende di Giacobbe e avrò pietà delle sue dimore; la città sarà ricostruita sulle sue rovine e il palazzo sarà stabilito nel suo giusto posto.

¶ Thus hath the LORD said; Behold, I will turn the captivity of Jacob’s tents and have mercy on his dwelling places and the city shall be built upon her own hill, and the temple according to her judgment shall stand.

19 U sciranno da essi canti di ringraziamento e voci di gente in festa; li farò moltiplicare e non diminuire, li renderò onorati e non saranno piú umiliati.

And out of them shall proceed thanksgiving and the voice of people that live in joy: and I will multiply them, and they shall not be decreased; I will multiply them, and they shall not be cut down.

20 I suoi figli saranno come una volta e la sua assemblea sarà resa stabile davanti a me, ma punirò tutti i loro oppressori.

Their sons shall also be as at first, and their congregation shall be confirmed before me, and I will visit all their oppressors.

21 I l suo principe sarà uno di essi, e il suo dominatore uscirà di mezzo a loro; io lo farò avvicinare ed egli si accosterà a me. Chi infatti disporrebbe il suo cuore per avvicinarsi a me?», dice l'Eterno.

And of him shall be their Rock, and from the midst of him shall their Governor come forth; and I will cause him to come near, and he shall draw near unto me: for who is this that softened his heart to approach unto me? said the LORD.

22 « Voi sarete il mio popolo, e io sarò il vostro Dio»,

And ye shall be my people, and I will be your God.

23 E cco la tempesta dell'Eterno si scatena furiosa, una tempesta travolgente cadrà violentemente sul capo degli empi.

Behold, the whirlwind of the LORD goes forth with fury, the whirlwind which is preparing itself; it shall remain upon the head of the wicked.

24 L 'ardente ira dell'Eterno non si acquieterà, finché non abbia compiuto e finché non abbia realizzato i disegni del suo cuore. Negli ultimi giorni lo capirete.

The fierce anger of the LORD shall not return until he has done it and until he has performed the intents of his heart; in the end of the days ye shall understand this.
