1 P rofezia che il profeta Habacuc ebbe in visione.

¶ The burden which Habakkuk the prophet saw.

2 F ino a quando, o Eterno, griderò, senza che tu mi dia ascolto? Io grido a te: «Violenza!», ma tu non salvi.

O LORD, how long shall I cry, and thou wilt not hear; and raise my voice unto thee because of the violence, and thou wilt not save?

3 P erché mi fai vedere l'iniquità e mi fai guardare la perversità? Davanti a me stanno rapina e violenza, c'è contesa e cresce la discordia.

Why dost thou cause me to see iniquity and cause me to behold grievance and destruction and violence before me, in addition to those that raise up strife and contention?

4 P erciò la legge non ha forza e la giustizia non riesce ad affermarsi, perché l'empio raggira il giusto e la giustizia ne esce pervertita.

Therefore the law is weakened, and the judgment does not go forth true: for the wicked compasses about the righteous; therefore wrong judgment proceeds.

5 « Guardate fra le nazioni e osservate, siate stupefatti e sbalorditi, perché io compirò ai vostri giorni un'opera, che voi non credereste, anche se ve la raccontassero.

¶ Behold among the Gentiles and regard and wonder marvelously, for a work shall be done in your days which ye will not believe, though it be told you.

6 P oiché ecco, io susciterò i Caldei, nazione feroce e impetuosa, che percorre la terra nella sua ampiezza per impadronirsi di abitazioni non sue.

For, behold, I raise up the Chaldeans, that bitter and hasty nation, which march through the breadth of the earth to possess the dwellingplaces that are not theirs.

7 E ' terribile, spaventevole; il suo giudizio e la sua dignità procedono da lei stessa.

She is terrible and dreadful: from her herself shall go forth their rights and their grandeur.

8 I suoi cavalli sono piú veloci dei leopardi, piú feroci dei lupi della sera. I suoi destrieri si spargono ovunque, i suoi destrieri vengono da lontano, volano come l'aquila che piomba sulla preda per divorare.

Their horses shall be swifter than tigers and are sharper than the evening wolves, and their horsemen shall multiply themselves, and their horsemen shall come from far; they shall fly as eagles that hasten to eat.

9 V engono tutti per far violenza, le loro facce sono protese in avanti e ammassano prigionieri come la sabbia.

All of her shall come for the prey, before their faces an east wind, and they shall gather the captives as the sand.

10 E gli si fa beffe dei re e i principi sono per lui oggetto di scherno; si ride di ogni fortezza, perché accumula un po' di terra e la prende.

And he shall scoff at the kings, and the princes shall be a scorn unto him, he shall deride every fortress and shall heap dust and take it.

11 Q uindi avanza velocemente come il vento, passa oltre e si rende colpevole attribuendo questa sua forza al suo dio».

Then he shall become arrogant against God, and he shall pass ahead and shall be found guilty, imputing this his power unto his god.

12 N on sei tu da sempre, o Eterno, mio DIO, il mio Santo? Noi non moriremo, o Eterno, perché tu l'hai designato per fare giustizia e l'hai stabilito, o Rocca, per castigare.

¶ Art thou not from the beginning, O LORD my God, my Holy One? we shall not die, O LORD, thou hast ordained him for judgment, and thou hast established him strong for chastisement.

13 T u hai gli occhi troppo puri per vedere il male e non puoi guardare l'iniquità. Perché stai a guardare quelli che agiscono con frode, e taci quando il malvagio divora chi è piú giusto di lui?

Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil and canst not look on iniquity: why dost thou look upon those that deal treacherously and hold thy tongue when the wicked devour the man that is more righteous than he?

14 P erché rendi gli uomini come i pesci del mare e come i rettili che non hanno signore?

And dost make men as the fishes of the sea, as reptiles that have no lord?

15 E gli li prende tutti all'amo, li cattura con la sua rete e li raccoglie con la sua rete da pesca; quindi si rallegra ed esulta.

He shall take up all of them with his hook; he shall catch them in his net and gather them in his drag: therefore, he shall rejoice and be glad.

16 P er questo fa sacrifici alla sua rete e brucia incenso alla sua rete da pesca, perché con essi la sua parte è ingente e il suo cibo abbondante.

Therefore, he shall sacrifice unto his net and burn incense unto his drag because by them his portion is fat, and his food plenteous.

17 C ontinuerà dunque egli a vuotare la sua rete e a massacrare le nazioni senza pietà?

Shall he therefore empty his net, or have pity to stop slaying Gentiles continually?
