1 A llora Giobbe rispose e disse:

¶ Then Job answered and said,

2 « Sí, io so che è cosí, ma come può un uomo essere giusto davanti a Dio?

I know it is so of a truth, but how shall a man be justified with God?

3 S e uno volesse disputare con lui, non potrebbe rispondergli una volta su mille.

If he desires to contend with him, he will not be able to answer him one thing of a thousand.

4 D io è saggio di cuore e potente per la forza; chi mai si è indurito contro di lui e ha prosperato?

He is wise in heart and mighty in strength; who has hardened himself against him and remained in peace?

5 E gli sposta le montagne senza che se ne avvedano, quando nella sua ira le sconvolge.

Who uproots the mountains in his anger, and they know not who overturned them.

6 E gli scuote la terra dal suo posto, e le sue colonne tremano.

Who removes the earth out of her place and causes her pillars to tremble.

7 C omanda al sole, ed esso non sorge, e mette un sigillo alle stelle.

Who commands the sun, and it rises not; and seals up the stars.

8 D a solo dispiega i cieli e cammina sulle alte onde del mare.

He alone extends the heavens and walks upon the waves of the sea.

9 H a fatto l'Orsa e l'Orione, le Pleiadi e le regioni del sud.

He who made Arcturus, Orion, and Pleiades, and the secret places of the south.

10 E gli fa cose grandi e imperscrutabili, meraviglie senza numero

He who does great things past finding out, and wonders without number.

11 E cco, mi passa vicino e non lo vedo, passa oltre e non me ne accorgo.

Behold, he shall pass before me, and I shall not see him; and he shall pass on, and I shall not understand him.

12 E cco, afferra la preda, e chi gliela può riprendere? Chi può dirgli: "che cosa fai?"

Behold, he shall take away, who can cause him to restore? Who shall say unto him, What doest thou?

13 D io non ritira la sua collera, sotto di lui si curvano gli aiutanti di Rahab,

God will not withdraw his anger, and under him those who help, unto pride are bent over.

14 C ome dunque potrei io rispondergli e scegliere le mie parole per discutere con lui?

¶ How much less shall I answer him and choose out my words to reason with him?

15 A nche se avessi ragione, non potrei rispondergli, ma chiederei grazia al mio giudice.

Who even though I am righteous, yet I would not answer, but I would make supplication to my judge.

16 S e io lo invocassi ed egli mi rispondesse, non potrei ancora credere che ha ascoltato la mia voce,

Who if I were to invoke him, and he answered me; yet I would not believe that he had hearkened unto my voice.

17 l ui, che mi colpisce con la tempesta, e moltiplica le mie ferite senza motivo.

For he has broken me with a tempest and has multiplied my wounds without cause.

18 N on mi lascia riprendere fiato, anzi mi sazia di amarezze.

He will not suffer me to take my breath but has filled me with bitterness.

19 S e si tratta di forza, ecco, egli è potente; se di giudizio, chi mi fisserà un giorno per comparire?

If we were to speak of his strength, he is certainly strong; and if of his judgment, who shall cause us to meet?

20 A nche se fossi giusto, il mio stesso parlare mi condannerebbe; anche se fossi integro, egli proverebbe che sono perverso.

If I justify myself, my own mouth shall condemn me: if I say, I am perfect, he shall prove me perverse.

21 S ono integro, ma non ho alcuna stima di me stesso e disprezzo la mia vita.

If I say I am imperfect, I know not my soul; I would condemn my life.

22 E la stessa cosa; perciò dico: Egli distrugge l'integro e il malvagio

¶ One thing remains, that I say, He consumes the perfect and the wicked.

23 S e un flagello semina improvvisamente la morte, egli ride della sofferenza degli innocenti.

If it is the scourge, it slays suddenly, and it does not laugh at the trial of the innocent.

24 L a terra è data in balìa dei malvagi; egli vela gli occhi ai giudici di essa; se non è lui, chi potrebbe dunque essere?

The earth is given into the hand of the wicked; he covers the faces of its judges; if it is not he who does this then, who is it and where is he?

25 O ra i miei giorni passano piú veloci di un corridore, fuggono via senza vedere alcun bene.

¶ Now my days are swifter than a post; they fled away, they never saw good.

26 P assano rapidi come navi di giunchi, come l'aquila che piomba sulla preda.

They are passed away as the ships of Ebeh as the eagle that throws himself on the prey.

27 S e dico: "voglio dimenticare il mio lamento. deporre il mio aspetto triste e mostrarmi contento",

If I say, I will forget my complaint, I will leave off my heaviness and comfort myself;

28 m i spavento per tutti i miei dolori; so bene che non mi riterrai innocente.

I am afraid of all my troubles; I know that thou wilt not hold me guiltless.

29 S e sono già stato condannato, perché affaticarmi invano?

If I am wicked, why then shall I toil in vain?

30 A nche se mi lavassi con la neve e pulissi le mie mani con la soda,

If I wash myself with snow water and make my hands never so clean;

31 t u mi getteresti nel fango di una fossa, le mie stesse vesti mi avrebbero in orrore.

yet thou shalt plunge me into the pit, and my own clothes shall abhor me.

32 E gli infatti non è un uomo come me, a cui possa rispondere e che possiamo comparire in giudizio assieme.

For he is not a man, as I am, that I should answer him, and we should come together unto judgment.

33 N on c'è alcun arbitro fra noi, che ponga la mano su tutti e due.

Neither is there any arbiter between us, that might lay his hand upon us both.

34 A llontani da me la sua verga, e il suo terrore non mi spaventi.

Let him take his tormentor away from me, and his terror will not perturb me.

35 A llora potrò parlare senza temerlo. perché non sono cosí con me stesso».

Then I would speak and not fear him, because in this state I am not myself.
