1 R oboamo andò a Sichem, perché tutto Israele era venuto a Sichem per farlo re.

¶ And Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all Israel had come to Shechem to make him king.

2 Q uando Geroboamo, figlio di Nebat, venne a saperlo (egli era in Egitto, dove era fuggito lontano dalla presenza del re Salomone) e Geroboamo viveva in Egitto.

And it came to pass, when Jeroboam, the son of Nebat, who was yet in Egypt, heard of it (for he had fled from the presence of King Solomon, and Jeroboam dwelt in Egypt),

3 A llora lo mandarono a chiamare. Cosí Geroboamo e tutta l'assemblea d'Israele vennero a parlare a Roboamo e gli dissero:

that they sent and called him. And Jeroboam and all the congregation of Israel came and spoke unto Rehoboam, saying,

4 « Tuo padre ha reso il nostro giogo pesante; ora tu alleggerisci la dura servitú di tuo padre e il giogo pesante che egli ci ha imposto e noi ti serviremo».

Thy father made our yoke grievous; now therefore make thou the grievous service of thy father and his heavy yoke which he put upon us, lighter, and we will serve thee.

5 E gli rispose loro: «Andatevene e tornate da me fra tre giorni». E il popolo se ne ando.

And he said unto them, Depart, and in three days come again to me. And the people departed.

6 A llora il re Roboamo si consigliò con gli anziani che erano stati al servizio di suo padre Salomone, quando era in vita, e disse: «Che cosa mi consigliate di rispondere a questo popolo?».

Then King Rehoboam consulted with the old men that had stood before Solomon, his father, while he yet lived, and said, How do ye advise that I may answer this people?

7 Q uelli gli risposero, dicendo: «Se oggi ti farai servo di questo popolo e li servirai, se ti mostrerai condiscendente verso di loro e dirai loro buone parole, essi saranno tuoi servi per sempre».

And they spoke unto him, saying, If thou wilt be a slave unto this people this day and wilt serve them and answer them by speaking good words unto them, then they will be thy slaves for ever.

8 M a Roboamo rifiutò il consiglio che gli anziani gli avevano dato e si consigliò con i giovani che erano cresciuti con lui ed erano al suo servizio,

But he forsook the counsel of the old men, which they had given him, and consulted with the young men that were grown up with him and who stood before him.

9 e disse loro: «Che cosa mi consigliate di rispondere a questo popolo che mi ha parlato, dicendo: "Alleggerisci il giogo impostoci da tuo padre"?».

And he said unto them, What counsel give ye that we may answer this people who have spoken to me, saying, Make the yoke which thy father put upon us lighter?

10 A llora i giovani che erano cresciuti con lui gli risposero, dicendo: «Cosí risponderai a questo popolo che si è rivolto a te dicendo: "Tuo padre ha reso pesante il nostro giogo; ora tu alleggeriscilo". Cosí dirai loro: "Il mio dito mignolo è più grosso dei fianchi di mio padre;

And the young men that were grown up with him spoke unto him, saying, Thus shalt thou speak unto this people that spoke unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, but make thou it lighter unto us; thus shalt thou say unto them: My little finger is thicker than my father’s loins.

11 p erciò, se mio padre vi ha caricati di un giogo pesante, io lo renderò ancora piú pesante; se mio padre vi ha castigati con fruste, io vi castigherò con flagelli"».

And now whereas my father ladened you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke; my father has chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.

12 T re giorni dopo Geroboamo e tutto il popolo vennero da Roboamo, come aveva ordinato il re, dicendo: «Tornate da me fra tre giorni».

So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king had appointed, saying, Come to me again the third day.

13 I l re rispose al popolo duramente, rifiutando cosí il consiglio che gli anziani gli avevano dato;

And the king answered the people roughly and forsook the old men’s counsel that they gave him

14 p arlò invece al popolo secondo il consiglio dei giovani, dicendo: «Mio padre ha reso pesante il vostro giogo, ma io lo renderò piú pesante ancora; mio padre vi ha castigati con fruste, ma io vi castigherò con flagelli».

and spoke to them after the counsel of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, and I will add to your yoke; my father also chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.

15 C osì il re non diede ascolto al popolo, perché l'andamento delle cose dipendeva dall'Eterno, affinché si adempisse la parola che l'Eterno aveva rivolto a Geroboamo, figlio di Nebat, per mezzo di Ahijah di Sciloh.

Therefore, the king did not hearken unto the people, for the cause was from the LORD, to confirm his word, which the LORD spoke by Ahijah the Shilonite unto Jeroboam, the son of Nebat.

16 Q uando tutto Israele vide che il re non gli dava ascolto, rispose al re, dicendo: «Che parte abbiamo noi con Davide? Non abbiamo alcuna eredità col figlio di Isai! Alle tue tende, o Israele! Ora provvedi alla tua casa o Davide!». Cosí Israele andò alle sue tende.

¶ So when all Israel saw that the king did not hearken unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? There is no inheritance in the son of Jesse. To your tents, O Israel! Now see to thine own house, David. So Israel departed unto their tents.

17 M a sui figli d'Israele che abitavano nelle città di Giuda regnò Roboamo.

But Rehoboam reigned over the sons of Israel who dwelt in the cities of Judah.

18 I l re Roboamo mandò Adoram, incaricato dei tributi, ma tutto Israele lo lapidò con pietre, ed egli morí. Allora il re Roboamo si affrettò a salire su un carro per fuggire a Gerusalemme.

Then King Rehoboam sent Adoram, who was over the tribute, but all Israel stoned him with stones, and he died. Then King Rehoboam made speed to get into his chariot and flee to Jerusalem.

19 C osí Israele è stato ribelle alla casa di Davide fino al giorno d'oggi.

So Israel rebelled against the house of David unto this day.

20 Q uando tutto Israele udí che Geroboamo era tornato, lo mandò a chiamare perché venisse all'assemblea e lo fece re su tutto Israele. Nessuno seguí la casa di Davide, ad eccezione della sola tribú di Giuda.

And it came to pass, when all Israel heard that Jeroboam was come again, that they sent and called him unto the congregation and made him king over all Israel; there were none that followed the house of David, but the tribe of Judah only.

21 R oboamo, giunto a Gerusalemme, convocò tutta la casa di Giuda e la tribú di Beniamino, centottantamila guerrieri scelti, per combattere contro la casa d'Israele e cosí restituire il regno a Roboamo, figlio di Salomone.

And when Rehoboam came to Jerusalem, he assembled all the house of Judah, with the tribe of Benjamin, one hundred and eighty thousand chosen men of war, to fight against the house of Israel, to bring the kingdom again to Rehoboam, the son of Solomon.

22 M a la parola di DIO fu rivolta a Scemaiah, uomo di DIO, dicendo:

But the word of God came unto Shemaiah, the man of God, saying,

23 « Parla a Roboamo, figlio di Salomone, re di Giuda, a tutta la casa di Giuda e di Beniamino e al resto del popolo, e di' loro:

Speak unto Rehoboam, the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and unto all the house of Judah and Benjamin and to the remnant of the people, saying,

24 C osí parla l'Eterno: "Non salite a combattere contro i vostri fratelli, i figli d'Israele! Ognuno torni a casa sua, perche questa cosa viene da me"». Essi ubbidirono alla parola dell'Eterno e se ne tornarono indietro, secondo la parola dell'Eterno.

Thus hath the LORD said, Ye shall not go up nor fight against your brethren, the sons of Israel; return each one to his house, for this thing is from me. They hearkened, therefore, to the word of the LORD and returned to depart, according to the word of the LORD.

25 P oi Geroboamo edificò Sichem nella regione montuosa di Efraim e vi si stabilì; quindi uscí di là e edificò Penuel.

¶ And Jeroboam rebuilt Shechem in Mount Ephraim and dwelt therein, and going out from there, rebuilt Penuel.

26 G eroboamo disse in cuor suo: «Ora il regno tornerà probabilmente alla casa di Davide.

And Jeroboam said in his heart, Now shall the kingdom return to the house of David

27 S e questo popolo sale a Gerusalemme per offrire sacrifici nella casa dell'Eterno, il cuore di questo popolo si volgerà nuovamente verso il suo signore verso Roboamo re di Giuda; cosí mi uccideranno e torneranno a Roboamo, re di Giuda».

if this people go up to sacrifice in the house of the LORD at Jerusalem; for the heart of this people shall turn again unto their lord, even unto Rehoboam, king of Judah, and they shall kill me and go again to Rehoboam, king of Judah.

28 D opo essersi consigliato, il re fece due vitelli d'oro e disse al popolo: «E' troppo per voi salire fino a Gerusalemme! O Israele, ecco i tuoi dèi che ti hanno fatto uscire dal paese d'Egitto!».

And having taken counsel, the king made two calves of gold and said unto the people, It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem; behold thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.

29 N e collocò quindi uno a Bethel, e l'altro a Dan.

And he set the one in Bethel and the other he put in Dan.

30 Q uesto fu causa di peccato, perché il popolo andava fino a Dan per prostrarsi davanti a un vitello.

And this became an occasion for sin, for the people went to worship before the one, even unto Dan.

31 E gli costruí anche templi sugli alti luoghi e fece sacerdoti presi da ogni ceto di persone, che non erano figli di Levi.

And he made a house of high places and made priests of the lowest of the people, who were not of the sons of Levi.

32 G eroboamo istituí una festa nell'ottavo mese, il quindicesimo giorno del mese, simile alla festa che si celebrava in Giuda e offrí sacrifici sull'altare. Cosí fece a Bethel per sacrificare ai vitelli da lui fatti; e a Bethel stabilí i sacerdoti degli alti luoghi che aveva eretti.

Then Jeroboam ordained a solemnity in the eighth month, on the fifteenth day of the month, like unto the solemnity that was celebrated in Judah; and he sacrificed upon the altar. So did he in Bethel, sacrificing unto the calves that he had made. He also ordered in Bethel the priests of the high places which he had made.

33 I l quindicesimo giorno dell'ottavo mese, mese scelto da lui stesso, Geroboamo salí all'altare che aveva costruito a Bethel; istituí una festa per i figli d'Israele e salí all'altare per bruciare incenso.

So he sacrificed upon the altar which he had made in Bethel on the fifteenth day of the eighth month, the month which he had devised of his own heart, and made a feast unto the sons of Israel; and he climbed up on the altar to burn incense.
