1 R oboam fue a Siquem, porque todo Israel había ido allí para hacerlo rey.

¶ And Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all Israel had come to Shechem to make him king.

2 A conteció que lo supo Jeroboam hijo de Nabat, que aún estaba en Egipto, adonde había huido del rey Salomón, y donde vivía.

And it came to pass, when Jeroboam, the son of Nebat, who was yet in Egypt, heard of it (for he had fled from the presence of King Solomon, and Jeroboam dwelt in Egypt),

3 E nviaron a llamarlo, y él se presentó con toda la congregación de Israel, y le dijeron a Roboam:

that they sent and called him. And Jeroboam and all the congregation of Israel came and spoke unto Rehoboam, saying,

4 — Tu padre agravó nuestro yugo. Alivia tú ahora algo de la dura servidumbre de tu padre y del pesado yugo que nos impuso, y te serviremos.

Thy father made our yoke grievous; now therefore make thou the grievous service of thy father and his heavy yoke which he put upon us, lighter, and we will serve thee.

5 É l les respondió: —Idos, y de aquí a tres días volved a mí. Y el pueblo se fue.

And he said unto them, Depart, and in three days come again to me. And the people departed.

6 E ntonces el rey Roboam pidió consejo de los ancianos que habían servido a su padre Salomón cuando vivía, y dijo: —¿Cómo aconsejáis vosotros que responda a este pueblo?

Then King Rehoboam consulted with the old men that had stood before Solomon, his father, while he yet lived, and said, How do ye advise that I may answer this people?

7 E llos le hablaron así: —Si te pones hoy al servicio de este pueblo, lo sirves y le respondes con buenas palabras, ellos te servirán para siempre.

And they spoke unto him, saying, If thou wilt be a slave unto this people this day and wilt serve them and answer them by speaking good words unto them, then they will be thy slaves for ever.

8 P ero él desechó el consejo que los ancianos le habían dado, y pidió consejo de los jóvenes que se habían criado con él y estaban a su servicio.

But he forsook the counsel of the old men, which they had given him, and consulted with the young men that were grown up with him and who stood before him.

9 Y les preguntó: —¿Cómo aconsejáis vosotros que respondamos a este pueblo que me ha hablado diciendo: “Alivia en algo el yugo que tu padre nos impuso”?

And he said unto them, What counsel give ye that we may answer this people who have spoken to me, saying, Make the yoke which thy father put upon us lighter?

10 E ntonces los jóvenes que se habían criado con él le respondieron: —Así hablarás a este pueblo que te ha dicho estas palabras: “Tu padre agravó nuestro yugo, pero tú alívialo en algo”; así les hablarás: “El menor de mis dedos es más grueso que la cintura de mi padre.

And the young men that were grown up with him spoke unto him, saying, Thus shalt thou speak unto this people that spoke unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, but make thou it lighter unto us; thus shalt thou say unto them: My little finger is thicker than my father’s loins.

11 A hora, pues, mi padre os cargó con un pesado yugo, pero yo lo haré más pesado aún; mi padre os castigó con azotes, pero yo os castigaré con escorpiones.”

And now whereas my father ladened you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke; my father has chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.

12 A l tercer día se presentó Jeroboam con todo el pueblo ante Roboam, según el rey lo había mandado, cuando dijo: «Regresad a verme al tercer día.»

So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king had appointed, saying, Come to me again the third day.

13 P ero el rey respondió al pueblo duramente, desechando el consejo que los ancianos le habían dado,

And the king answered the people roughly and forsook the old men’s counsel that they gave him

14 y hablándoles conforme al consejo de los jóvenes, les dijo: «Mi padre agravó vuestro yugo, pero yo lo haré más pesado aún; mi padre os castigó con azotes, pero yo os castigaré con escorpiones.»

and spoke to them after the counsel of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, and I will add to your yoke; my father also chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.

15 A sí que no oyó el rey al pueblo, pues era un designio de Jehová para confirmar la palabra que había dado a Jeroboam hijo de Nabat por medio de Ahías, el silonita.

Therefore, the king did not hearken unto the people, for the cause was from the LORD, to confirm his word, which the LORD spoke by Ahijah the Shilonite unto Jeroboam, the son of Nebat.

16 C uando todo el pueblo vio que el rey no les había oído, le respondió con estas palabras: «¿Qué parte tenemos nosotros con David? No tenemos herencia en el hijo de Isaí. ¡Israel, cada uno a sus tiendas! ¡David, mira ahora por tu casa!» Entonces Israel se fue a sus tiendas,

¶ So when all Israel saw that the king did not hearken unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? There is no inheritance in the son of Jesse. To your tents, O Israel! Now see to thine own house, David. So Israel departed unto their tents.

17 m ientras Roboam siguió reinando sobre los hijos de Israel que habitaban en las ciudades de Judá.

But Rehoboam reigned over the sons of Israel who dwelt in the cities of Judah.

18 C uando el rey Roboam envió a Adoram, que estaba encargado de los tributos, todo Israel lo apedreó y lo mató. Entonces el rey Roboam se apresuró a subirse en un carro y huir a Jerusalén.

Then King Rehoboam sent Adoram, who was over the tribute, but all Israel stoned him with stones, and he died. Then King Rehoboam made speed to get into his chariot and flee to Jerusalem.

19 A sí se apartó Israel de la casa de David hasta hoy.

So Israel rebelled against the house of David unto this day.

20 A conteció que al oír todo Israel que Jeroboam había vuelto, enviaron a llamarlo a la congregación y lo hicieron rey de todo Israel, sin quedar tribu alguna que siguiera a la casa de David, sino sólo la tribu de Judá.

And it came to pass, when all Israel heard that Jeroboam was come again, that they sent and called him unto the congregation and made him king over all Israel; there were none that followed the house of David, but the tribe of Judah only.

21 C uando Roboam llegó a Jerusalén reunió a toda la casa de Judá y a la tribu de Benjamín, ciento ochenta mil hombres, todos guerreros escogidos, con el fin de hacer la guerra a la casa de Israel y devolver el reino a Roboam hijo de Salomón.

And when Rehoboam came to Jerusalem, he assembled all the house of Judah, with the tribe of Benjamin, one hundred and eighty thousand chosen men of war, to fight against the house of Israel, to bring the kingdom again to Rehoboam, the son of Solomon.

22 P ero Jehová habló a Semaías, hombre de Dios, diciendo:

But the word of God came unto Shemaiah, the man of God, saying,

23 « Habla a Roboam hijo de Salomón, rey de Judá, a toda la casa de Judá y de Benjamín, y a los demás del pueblo, y diles:

Speak unto Rehoboam, the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and unto all the house of Judah and Benjamin and to the remnant of the people, saying,

24 “ Así ha dicho Jehová: No vayáis, ni peleéis contra vuestros hermanos, los hijos de Israel; volveos cada uno a su casa, porque esto es obra mía.”» Al oír ellos la palabra de Dios regresó cada uno a su casa, conforme a la palabra de Jehová. El pecado de Jeroboam

Thus hath the LORD said, Ye shall not go up nor fight against your brethren, the sons of Israel; return each one to his house, for this thing is from me. They hearkened, therefore, to the word of the LORD and returned to depart, according to the word of the LORD.

25 E ntonces reedificó Jeroboam a Siquem en los montes de Efraín, y habitó en ella. Luego salió de allí y reedificó a Penuel.

¶ And Jeroboam rebuilt Shechem in Mount Ephraim and dwelt therein, and going out from there, rebuilt Penuel.

26 P ero Jeroboam pensó en su corazón: «Ahora, la casa de David recuperará el reino

And Jeroboam said in his heart, Now shall the kingdom return to the house of David

27 s i este pueblo sube a ofrecer sacrificios en la casa de Jehová en Jerusalén, porque el corazón de este pueblo se volverá a su señor Roboam, rey de Judá, me matarán a mí y se volverán a Roboam, rey de Judá.»

if this people go up to sacrifice in the house of the LORD at Jerusalem; for the heart of this people shall turn again unto their lord, even unto Rehoboam, king of Judah, and they shall kill me and go again to Rehoboam, king of Judah.

28 D espués de tomar consejo, hizo el rey dos becerros de oro, y dijo al pueblo: «Ya habéis subido bastante a Jerusalén. Aquí están tus dioses, Israel, los cuales te hicieron subir de la tierra de Egipto.»

And having taken counsel, the king made two calves of gold and said unto the people, It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem; behold thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.

29 E ntonces puso uno en Bet-el y el otro en Dan.

And he set the one in Bethel and the other he put in Dan.

30 E sto fue causa de pecado, porque el pueblo iba a adorar delante de uno de ellos hasta Dan.

And this became an occasion for sin, for the people went to worship before the one, even unto Dan.

31 H izo también casas sobre los lugares altos y designó sacerdotes de entre el pueblo que no eran de los hijos de Leví.

And he made a house of high places and made priests of the lowest of the people, who were not of the sons of Levi.

32 L uego instituyó Jeroboam una fiesta solemne en el mes octavo, a los quince días del mes, conforme a la fiesta solemne que se celebraba en Judá, y ofreció sacrificios sobre un altar. Lo mismo hizo en Bet-el, ofreciendo sacrificios a los becerros que había hecho. Ordenó también en Bet-el sacerdotes para los lugares altos que él había fabricado.

Then Jeroboam ordained a solemnity in the eighth month, on the fifteenth day of the month, like unto the solemnity that was celebrated in Judah; and he sacrificed upon the altar. So did he in Bethel, sacrificing unto the calves that he had made. He also ordered in Bethel the priests of the high places which he had made.

33 S acrificó, pues, sobre el altar que él había hecho en Bet-el, a los quince días del mes octavo, el mes que él había inventado según el dictado de su propio corazón. Así hizo fiesta a los hijos de Israel, y subió al altar para quemar incienso.

So he sacrificed upon the altar which he had made in Bethel on the fifteenth day of the eighth month, the month which he had devised of his own heart, and made a feast unto the sons of Israel; and he climbed up on the altar to burn incense.
