1 V iendo Jacob que en Egipto había alimentos, dijo a sus hijos: «¿Por qué os estáis ahí mirando?

¶ Now when Jacob saw that there was food in Egypt, Jacob said unto his sons, Why are ye looking upon one another?

2 Y o he oído que hay víveres en Egipto; descended allá y comprad de allí para nosotros, para que podamos vivir y no muramos.»

And he said, Behold, I have heard that there is food in Egypt; go down there and buy for us from there that we may live, and not die.

3 D escendieron los diez hermanos de José a comprar trigo en Egipto.

And Joseph’s ten brethren went down to buy wheat in Egypt.

4 P ero Jacob no envió a Benjamín, hermano de José, con sus hermanos, porque dijo: «No sea que le acontezca algún desastre.»

But Jacob did not send Benjamin, Joseph’s brother, with his brethren; for he said, Lest peradventure disaster befall him.

5 F ueron, pues, los hijos de Israel entre los que iban a comprar, porque había hambre en la tierra de Canaán.

And the sons of Israel came to buy among those that came, for the famine was in the land of Canaan.

6 J osé era el señor de la tierra, quien le vendía trigo a todo el mundo. Cuando llegaron los hermanos de José, se inclinaron a él rostro en tierra.

And Joseph was the lord over the land, and he it was that sold the wheat to all the people of the land; and Joseph’s brethren came and bowed down themselves before him with their faces to the earth.

7 J osé reconoció a sus hermanos en cuanto los vio; pero hizo como que no los conocía, y hablándoles ásperamente les dijo: —¿De dónde habéis venido? Ellos respondieron: —De la tierra de Canaán, para comprar alimentos.

¶ And when Joseph saw his brethren, he knew them, but made himself strange unto them and spoke roughly unto them; and he said unto them, Where have you come from? And they said, From the land of Canaan to buy food.

8 R econoció, pues, José a sus hermanos, pero ellos no lo reconocieron.

And Joseph knew his brethren but they did not know him.

9 E ntonces se acordó José de los sueños que había tenido acerca de ellos, y les dijo: —Espías sois; para ver las regiones indefensas del país habéis venido.

Then Joseph remembered the dreams which he dreamed of them and said unto them, Ye are spies; to see the nakedness of the land ye are come.

10 — No, señor nuestro —respondieron ellos—, sino que tus siervos han venido a comprar alimentos.

And they said unto him, No, my lord, but to buy food are thy slaves come.

11 T odos nosotros somos hijos del mismo padre y somos hombres honrados; tus siervos nunca fueron espías.

We are all one man’s sons; we are men of the truth, thy slaves have never been spies.

12 P ero José les dijo: —No; para ver las regiones indefensas del país habéis venido.

And he said unto them, No, but to see the nakedness of the land ye are come.

13 — Tus siervos somos doce hermanos —respondieron ellos—, hijos de un hombre en la tierra de Canaán. El menor está hoy con nuestro padre y el otro ha desaparecido.

And they said, Thy slaves are twelve brethren, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan; and, behold, the youngest is this day with our father, and one is not.

14 Y José les dijo: —Eso es lo que os he dicho al afirmar que sois espías.

And Joseph said unto them, That is it that which I spoke unto you, saying, Ye are spies:

15 E n esto seréis probados: ¡Por vida del faraón, que no saldréis de aquí hasta que vuestro hermano menor venga!

Hereby ye shall be proved: By the life of Pharaoh ye shall not go forth from here unless your youngest brother comes here.

16 E nviad a uno de vosotros para que traiga a vuestro hermano, y vosotros quedad presos. Vuestras palabras serán probadas, si hay verdad en vosotros; y si no, ¡por la vida del faraón, que sois espías!

Send one of you and let him bring your brother, and ye shall be kept in prison that your words may be proved, whether there is any truth in you; or else by the life of Pharaoh surely ye are spies.

17 E ntonces los puso juntos en la cárcel por tres días.

And he put them all together into prison for three days.

18 A l tercer día les dijo José: —Haced esto y vivid: Yo temo a Dios.

And Joseph said unto them the third day, Do this and live, for I fear God.

19 S i sois hombres honrados, uno de vuestros hermanos se quedará en la cárcel, mientras los demás vais a llevar el alimento para remediar el hambre de vuestra familia.

If ye are men of the truth, let one of your brethren be bound in the house of your prison; go ye, carry food for the famine of your houses

20 P ero traeréis a vuestro hermano menor; así serán verificadas vuestras palabras y no moriréis. Ellos lo hicieron así,

but bring your youngest brother unto me, so shall your words be verified, and ye shall not die. And they did so.

21 p ero se decían el uno al otro: —Verdaderamente hemos pecado contra nuestro hermano, pues vimos la angustia de su alma cuando nos rogaba y no lo escuchamos; por eso ha venido sobre nosotros esta angustia.

¶ And they said one to another, We are truly guilty concerning our brother in that we saw the anguish of his soul when he besought us, and we would not hear; therefore is this distress come upon us.

22 E ntonces Rubén les respondió, diciendo: —¿No os hablé yo y dije: “No pequéis contra el joven”? Pero no me escuchasteis; por eso ahora se nos demanda su sangre.

Then Reuben answered them, saying, Did I not speak unto you, saying, Do not sin against the young man, and ye would not hear? Therefore, behold, his blood is also required.

23 E llos no sabían que José los entendía, porque éste tenía un intérprete para hablar con ellos.

And they did not know that Joseph understood them, for he spoke unto them by an interpreter.

24 E ntonces se apartó José de su lado, y lloró; cuando volvió a ellos, les habló y, tomando de entre ellos a Simeón, lo apresó en su presencia.

And he turned himself about from them and wept and returned to them again and spoke with them and took Simeon from them and bound him before their eyes.

25 D espués mandó José que llenaran sus sacos de trigo y devolvieran el dinero a cada uno de ellos, poniéndolo en su saco, y que les dieran comida para el camino; así se hizo con ellos.

Then Joseph commanded to fill their sacks with wheat and to restore each man’s money into his sack and to give them provisions for the way; and thus it was done unto them.

26 E ntonces pusieron ellos su trigo sobre sus asnos y se fueron de allí.

And they laded their asses with the wheat and departed from there.

27 P ero al abrir uno de ellos el saco para dar de comer a su asno en el mesón, vio el dinero que estaba en la boca de su costal.

And as one of them opened his sack to give his ass fodder in the inn, he saw his money; for, behold, it was in his sack’s mouth.

28 Y dijo a sus hermanos: —¡Me han devuelto mi dinero; aquí está, en mi saco! Entonces se les sobresaltó el corazón, y espantados se dijeron el uno al otro: —¿Qué es esto que Dios nos ha hecho?

And he said unto his brethren, My money is restored; and, behold, it is even in my sack. And their heart failed them, and they were afraid, saying one to another, What is this that God has done unto us?

29 C uando llegaron junto a Jacob, su padre, en tierra de Canaán, le contaron todo lo que les había acontecido, diciendo:

¶ And they came unto Jacob, their father, unto the land of Canaan and told him all that had befallen them, saying,

30 — Aquel hombre, el señor de la tierra, nos habló ásperamente y nos trató como a espías de la tierra.

The man, who is the lord of the land, spoke roughly to us and took us for spies of the country.

31 P ero nosotros le dijimos: “Somos hombres honrados, nunca fuimos espías.

And we said unto him, We are men of the truth; we have never been spies.

32 S omos doce hermanos, hijos de nuestro padre; uno ha desaparecido y el menor está hoy con nuestro padre en la tierra de Canaán.”

We are twelve brethren, sons of our father; one is not, and the youngest is this day with our father in the land of Canaan.

33 E ntonces aquel hombre, el señor de la tierra, nos dijo: “En esto conoceré que sois hombres honrados: dejad conmigo a uno de vuestros hermanos, tomad para remediar el hambre de vuestras familias y andad,

And the man, the lord of the country, said unto us, Hereby I shall know that ye are men of the truth; leave one of your brethren here with me and take food for the famine of your households and go

34 t raedme a vuestro hermano menor; así sabré que no sois espías, sino hombres honrados; entonces os entregaré a vuestro hermano y comerciaréis libremente por el país.”

and bring your youngest brother unto me; then I shall know that ye are not spies, but that ye are men of the truth; thus I will deliver you your brother, and ye shall trade in the land.

35 A conteció que cuando vaciaban ellos sus sacos, vieron que en el saco de cada uno estaba la bolsita con su dinero; y tanto ellos como su padre, al ver las bolsitas con el dinero, tuvieron temor.

And it came to pass as they emptied their sacks, that, behold, each man’s bundle of money was in his sack; and when both they and their father saw the bundles of money, they were afraid.

36 E ntonces su padre Jacob les dijo: —Me habéis privado de mis hijos: José no aparece, Simeón tampoco y ahora os llevaréis a Benjamín. Estas cosas acabarán conmigo.

And Jacob, their father, said unto them, Ye have bereaved me of my sons: Joseph is not, and Simeon is not, and ye will take Benjamin away; all these things are upon me.

37 R ubén respondió a su padre: —Quítales la vida a mis dos hijos, si no te lo devuelvo. Confíamelo a mí y yo te lo devolveré.

And Reuben spoke unto his father, saying, Slay my two sons, if I do not bring him to thee; deliver him into my hand, and I will bring him to thee again.

38 P ero Jacob replicó: —No descenderá mi hijo con vosotros, pues su hermano ha muerto y él ha quedado solo; si le acontece algún desastre en el camino por donde vais, haréis descender mis canas con dolor al seol.

And he said, My son shall not go down with you; for his brother is dead, and he alone is left; if some disaster should befall him by the way in which ye go, then shall ye bring my gray hairs with sorrow down to Sheol.
