1 P alabra de Jehová que vino a Jeremías, diciendo:

¶ The word which came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying,

2 « Levántate y desciende a casa del alfarero, y allí te haré oír mis palabras.»

Arise and go down to the potter’s house, and there I will cause thee to hear my words.

3 D escendí a casa del alfarero, y hallé que él estaba trabajando en el torno.

Then I went down to the potter’s house; and, behold, he wrought a work upon a wheel.

4 Y la vasija de barro que él hacía se echó a perder en sus manos, pero él volvió a hacer otra vasija, según le pareció mejor hacerla.

And the vessel that he made of clay was broken in the hand of the potter: so he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it.

5 E ntonces vino a mí palabra de Jehová, diciendo:

Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

6 « ¿No podré yo hacer con vosotros como este alfarero, casa de Israel?, dice Jehová. Como el barro en manos del alfarero, así sois vosotros en mis manos, casa de Israel.

O house of Israel, can I not do with you as this potter? saith the LORD. Behold, as the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are ye in my hand, O house of Israel.

7 E n un instante hablaré contra naciones y contra reinos, para arrancar, derribar y destruir.

In an instant I shall speak against Gentiles and against kingdoms, to pluck up and to pull down and to destroy.

8 P ero si esas naciones se convierten de su maldad contra la cual hablé, yo me arrepentiré del mal que había pensado hacerles,

But if these Gentiles shall turn from their evil, I will repent of the evil that I thought to do unto them.

9 y en un instante hablaré de esas naciones y de esos reinos, para edificar y para plantar.

And in an instant I shall speak concerning the nation and concerning the kingdom, to build and to plant it;

10 P ero si hacen lo malo delante de mis ojos, no oyendo mi voz, me arrepentiré del bien que había determinado hacerles.

but if it should do evil in my sight, not hearing my voice, then I will repent of the good that I had determined to do unto them.

11 » Ahora, pues, habla a todo hombre de Judá y a los habitantes de Jerusalén, diciendo: “Esto ha dicho Jehová: Yo dispongo el mal contra vosotros, y contra vosotros trazo planes; conviértase ahora cada uno de su mal camino, y mejore sus caminos y sus obras.”

¶ Now therefore, speak to every man of Judah and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying, Thus hath the LORD said: Behold, I ordain evil against you and devise plans against you; return ye now each one from his evil way, and better your ways and your doings.

12 P ero dirán: “Es inútil, porque en pos de nuestros ídolos iremos, y haremos cada uno el pensamiento de nuestro malvado corazón.”»

And they said, This is useless, for we must walk after our own devices, and we must each one do the imagination of his evil heart.

13 P or tanto, así dice Jehová: «Preguntad ahora a las naciones, quién ha oído cosa semejante. ¡Algo horrible ha hecho la virgen de Israel!

Therefore thus hath the LORD said; Ask now among the Gentiles, who has heard such things: the virgin of Israel has done a very horrible thing.

14 ¿ Faltará la nieve de las rocas de las montañas del Líbano? ¿Faltarán las aguas frías que fluyen de lejanas tierras?

Will anyone leave the snow of the rock of the field that flows from Lebanon? or shall they forsake the singular, cold, flowing waters?

15 ¡ Pues mi pueblo me ha olvidado, quemando incienso a lo que es vanidad! Ha tropezado en sus caminos, en las sendas antiguas, para caminar por senderos y no por un camino bien dispuesto.

Because my people have forgotten me, they have burned incense to vanity, and they have caused themselves to stumble in their ways, in the ancient paths, to walk in paths, in a way not trodden;

16 H an convertido su tierra en desolación, en objeto de burla perpetua; todo aquel que pase por ella, se asombrará y meneará la cabeza.

to make their land desolate, and a perpetual hissing; every one that passes thereby shall be astonished and wag his head.

17 D elante del enemigo los esparciré como viento del este. En el día de su perdición les mostraré las espaldas, y no el rostro.» Conspiración del pueblo y oración de Jeremías

I will scatter them as with an east wind before the enemy; I will show them the back, and not the face, in the day of their perdition.

18 E llos dijeron: «Venid y preparemos un plan contra Jeremías, porque la instrucción no le faltará al sacerdote ni el consejo al sabio ni la palabra al profeta. Venid calumniémoslo y no atendamos a ninguna de sus palabras.»

¶ Then they said, Come, and let us devise devices against Jeremiah; for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, and let us smite him with the tongue, and let us not consider any of his words.

19 J ehová, fíjate en mí y oye la voz de los que contienden conmigo.

Consider me, O LORD, and hear the voice of those that contend with me.

20 ¿ Se da mal por bien, para que hayan cavado un hoyo para mi vida? Acuérdate que me puse delante de ti para hablar bien por ellos, para apartar de ellos tu ira.

Shall evil be recompensed for good? for they have dug a pit for my soul. Remember that I stood before thee to speak good for them and to turn away thy wrath from them.

21 P or tanto, entrega sus hijos al hambre, dispérsalos por medio de la espada, queden sus mujeres sin hijos y viudas. Sean puestos a muerte sus maridos, y los jóvenes, heridos a espada en la guerra.

Therefore deliver up their sons to the famine, and pour out their blood by the force of the sword; and let their wives be bereaved of their children, and be widows; and let their men be put to death; let their young men be slain by the sword in battle.

22 ¡ Óigase el clamor de sus casas, cuando de repente traigas sobre ellos un ejército!, porque cavaron un hoyo para atraparme, y bajo mis pies han escondido lazos.

Let a cry be heard from their houses, when thou shalt bring a troop suddenly upon them; for they have dug a pit to take me and hid snares for my feet.

23 P ero tú, Jehová, conoces todo su consejo contra mí para darme muerte. No perdones su maldad ni borres su pecado de delante de tu rostro. ¡Tropiecen ellos delante de ti, y haz así con ellos en el tiempo de tu enojo!

Yet, LORD, thou dost know all their counsel against me to slay me; do not forgive their iniquity, neither blot out their sin from thy sight, but let them be overthrown before thee; deal thus with them in the time of thine anger.
