1 P alabra que vino a Jeremías de parte del Señor:

¶ The word which came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying,

2 “ Levántate y desciende a la casa del alfarero, y allí te anunciaré Mis palabras.”

Arise and go down to the potter’s house, and there I will cause thee to hear my words.

3 E ntonces descendí a la casa del alfarero, y allí estaba él, haciendo un trabajo sobre la rueda.

Then I went down to the potter’s house; and, behold, he wrought a work upon a wheel.

4 Y la vasija de barro que estaba haciendo se echó a perder en la mano del alfarero; así que volvió a hacer de ella otra vasija, según le pareció mejor al alfarero hacerla.

And the vessel that he made of clay was broken in the hand of the potter: so he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it.

5 E ntonces vino a mí la palabra del Señor:

Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

6 “ ¿Acaso no puedo Yo hacer con ustedes, casa de Israel, lo mismo que hace este alfarero?” declara el Señor. “Tal como el barro en manos del alfarero, así son ustedes en Mi mano, casa de Israel.

O house of Israel, can I not do with you as this potter? saith the LORD. Behold, as the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are ye in my hand, O house of Israel.

7 E n un momento Yo puedo hablar contra una nación o contra un reino, de arrancar, de derribar y de destruir;

In an instant I shall speak against Gentiles and against kingdoms, to pluck up and to pull down and to destroy.

8 p ero si esa nación contra la que he hablado se vuelve de su maldad, me arrepentiré del mal que pensaba traer sobre ella.

But if these Gentiles shall turn from their evil, I will repent of the evil that I thought to do unto them.

9 O en otro momento, puedo hablar acerca de una nación o de un reino, de edificar y de plantar;

And in an instant I shall speak concerning the nation and concerning the kingdom, to build and to plant it;

10 p ero si hace lo malo ante Mis ojos, no obedeciendo Mi voz, entonces me arrepentiré del bien con que había prometido bendecirlo.

but if it should do evil in my sight, not hearing my voice, then I will repent of the good that I had determined to do unto them.

11 A hora pues, habla a los hombres de Judá y a los habitantes de Jerusalén, y diles: ‘Así dice el Señor: “Estoy preparando una calamidad contra ustedes y tramando un plan contra ustedes. Vuélvanse, pues, cada uno de su mal camino y enmienden sus caminos y sus obras.”’

¶ Now therefore, speak to every man of Judah and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying, Thus hath the LORD said: Behold, I ordain evil against you and devise plans against you; return ye now each one from his evil way, and better your ways and your doings.

12 P ero ellos dirán: ‘Es en vano; porque vamos a seguir nuestros propios planes, y cada uno de nosotros obrará conforme a la terquedad de su malvado corazón.’

And they said, This is useless, for we must walk after our own devices, and we must each one do the imagination of his evil heart.

13 “ Por tanto, así dice el Señor: ‘Pregunten ahora entre las naciones: ¿Quién ha oído cosa semejante ? Algo muy horrible ha hecho La virgen de Israel.

Therefore thus hath the LORD said; Ask now among the Gentiles, who has heard such things: the virgin of Israel has done a very horrible thing.

14 ¿ Faltará la nieve del Líbano de la roca agreste? ¿O se agotarán las aguas frías que fluyen de tierras lejanas ?

Will anyone leave the snow of the rock of the field that flows from Lebanon? or shall they forsake the singular, cold, flowing waters?

15 P ues bien, Mi pueblo Me ha olvidado, Queman incienso a dioses vanos (a la vanidad), Y se han desviado de sus caminos, De las sendas antiguas, Para andar por senderos, No por calzada,

Because my people have forgotten me, they have burned incense to vanity, and they have caused themselves to stumble in their ways, in the ancient paths, to walk in paths, in a way not trodden;

16 C onvirtiendo su tierra en una desolación, En una burla perpetua. Todo el que pase por ella se quedará atónito Y moverá la cabeza.

to make their land desolate, and a perpetual hissing; every one that passes thereby shall be astonished and wag his head.

17 C omo viento del este los esparciré Delante del enemigo; Les mostraré la espalda y no el rostro El día de su calamidad.’”

I will scatter them as with an east wind before the enemy; I will show them the back, and not the face, in the day of their perdition.

18 E ntonces dijeron: “Vengan y tramemos planes contra Jeremías. Ciertamente la ley no le faltará al sacerdote, ni el consejo al sabio, ni la palabra al profeta. Vengan, vamos a herirlo con la lengua, y no hagamos caso a ninguna de sus palabras.”

¶ Then they said, Come, and let us devise devices against Jeremiah; for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, and let us smite him with the tongue, and let us not consider any of his words.

19 A tiéndeme, oh Señor, Y escucha lo que dicen mis contrarios.

Consider me, O LORD, and hear the voice of those that contend with me.

20 ¿ Acaso se debe pagar el bien con el mal ? Pues ellos han cavado una fosa para mí. Recuerda cómo me puse delante de Ti Para hablar bien en favor de ellos, Para apartar de ellos Tu furor.

Shall evil be recompensed for good? for they have dug a pit for my soul. Remember that I stood before thee to speak good for them and to turn away thy wrath from them.

21 P or tanto, entrega sus hijos al hambre, Y abandónalos al poder de la espada. Que se queden sus mujeres sin hijos y viudas; Sean sus maridos asesinados, Sus jóvenes heridos a espada en la batalla.

Therefore deliver up their sons to the famine, and pour out their blood by the force of the sword; and let their wives be bereaved of their children, and be widows; and let their men be put to death; let their young men be slain by the sword in battle.

22 Q ue se oigan los gritos desde sus casas, Cuando de repente traigas sobre ellos saqueadores; Porque han cavado fosa para atraparme, Y han escondido trampas a mis pies.

Let a cry be heard from their houses, when thou shalt bring a troop suddenly upon them; for they have dug a pit to take me and hid snares for my feet.

23 P ero Tú, oh Señor, conoces Todos sus planes de muerte contra mí. No perdones su iniquidad Ni borres de Tu vista su pecado. Que sean derribados delante de Ti; En el tiempo de Tu ira actúa contra ellos.

Yet, LORD, thou dost know all their counsel against me to slay me; do not forgive their iniquity, neither blot out their sin from thy sight, but let them be overthrown before thee; deal thus with them in the time of thine anger.
