¶ Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking savour: likewise a small act of folly unto him that is esteemed for wisdom and honour.

2 E l corazón del sabio lo guía hacia la derecha, Y el corazón del necio, hacia la izquierda.

A wise man’s heart is at his right hand, but a fool’s heart at his left.

3 A un cuando el necio ande por el camino, Le falta entendimiento Y demuestra a todos que es un necio.

Even when the fool walks by the way, he lacks prudence, and he says unto every one that he is a fool.

4 S i la ira del gobernante se levanta contra ti, No abandones tu puesto, Porque la serenidad suaviza grandes ofensas.

¶ If the spirit of the ruler rises up against thee, do not leave thy place; for meekness pacifies great sins.

5 H ay un mal que he visto bajo el sol, Como error que procede del gobernante:

There is another evil which I have seen under the sun, as an error which proceeds from the ruler:

6 L a necedad colocada en muchos lugares elevados, Mientras los ricos se sientan en lugares humildes.

Folly is set in great dignity, and the rich are seated in a low place.

7 H e visto siervos a caballo Y príncipes caminando como siervos sobre la tierra.

I saw slaves upon horses, and princes walking as slaves upon the earth.

8 E l que cava un hoyo cae en él, Y al que abre brecha en un muro, lo muerde la serpiente.

He that digs a pit shall fall into it, and whosoever breaks a hedge, a serpent shall bite him.

9 E l que saca piedras, puede lastimarse con ellas, Y el que corta leña, puede lesionarse con ella.

Whosoever moves the stones shall have tribulation along with it, and he that cuts the firewood shall be endangered by it.

10 S i el hierro está embotado y él no ha amolado su filo, Entonces tiene que ejercer más fuerza; La sabiduría tiene la ventaja de impartir éxito.

If the iron is blunt, and he does not whet the edge, then he must put forth more strength, but the advantages of wisdom excel.

11 S i la serpiente muerde antes de ser encantada, No hay ganancia para el encantador.

If the serpent bites without being enchanted, then the babbler is no more.

12 L lenas de gracia son las palabras de la boca del sabio, Mientras que los labios del necio a él lo consumen,

¶ The words from the mouth of the wise man are grace, but the lips of the fool will swallow up himself.

13 E l comienzo de las palabras de su boca es insensatez, Y el final de su habla perversa es locura.

The beginning of the words of his mouth is foolishness, and the end of his talk is mischievous madness.

14 E l necio multiplica las palabras, Pero nadie sabe lo que sucederá, ¿Y quién le hará saber lo que ha de suceder después de él ?

The fool multiplies words and says, Man cannot tell what shall be, and what shall be after him, who can tell him?

15 E l trabajo del necio lo cansa tanto Que no sabe ir a la ciudad.

The labour of the foolish wearies all of them because they do not know how to go to the city.

16 ¡ Ay de ti, tierra, cuyo rey es un muchacho, Y cuyos príncipes banquetean de mañana!

¶ Woe to thee, O land, when thy king is a child, and thy princes banquet in the morning!

17 B ienaventurada tú, tierra, cuyo rey es de noble cuna Y cuyos príncipes comen a su debida hora, Para fortalecerse y no para embriagarse.

Blessed art thou, O land, when thy king is the son of nobles, and thy princes eat in due season for strength, and not for drunkenness!

18 P or negligencia se hunde el techo, Y por pereza tiene goteras la casa.

By much slothfulness the building decays, and through idleness of the hands the rain drips throughout the house.

19 P ara el placer se prepara la comida, Y el vino alegra la vida, Y el dinero es la respuesta para todo.

The banquet is made for pleasure, and wine makes merry; but money answers all things.

20 N i aun en tu recámara maldigas al rey, Ni en tus alcobas maldigas al rico, Porque un ave de los cielos llevará el rumor, Y un ser alado hará conocer el asunto.

Do not curse the king, not even in thy thought; and do not curse the rich even in the secret place of thy bedchamber; for the birds of the air shall carry the voice, and those who have wings shall tell the matter.
