1 J efté el Galaadita era un guerrero valiente, hijo de una ramera. Galaad era el padre de Jefté.

¶ Now Jephthah existed then, a Gileadite, a mighty man of valour, the son of a harlot unto whom Gilead had begat a son.

2 Y la mujer de Galaad le dio hijos. Y cuando los hijos de su mujer crecieron, echaron fuera a Jefté, y le dijeron: “No tendrás heredad en la casa de nuestro padre, porque eres hijo de otra mujer.”

And Gilead’s wife bore him sons; and when his wife’s sons grew up, they threw Jephthah out and said unto him, Thou shalt not inherit in our father’s house, for thou art the son of a strange woman.

3 J efté huyó de sus hermanos y habitó en la tierra de Tob. Y hombres indignos se juntaron con Jefté y salían con él.

Then Jephthah fled from his brethren and dwelt in the land of Tob; and vain men joined themselves to Jephthah and went out with him.

4 D espués de cierto tiempo sucedió que los Amonitas pelearon contra Israel.

¶ And it came to pass after some days that the sons of Ammon made war against Israel.

5 Y cuando los Amonitas pelearon contra Israel, los ancianos de Galaad fueron a traer a Jefté de la tierra de Tob.

And when the sons of Ammon made war against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to fetch Jephthah out of the land of Tob;

6 Y dijeron a Jefté: “Ven y sé nuestro jefe para que peleemos contra los Amonitas.”

and they said unto Jephthah, Come, and thou shalt be our captain that we may fight with the sons of Ammon.

7 E ntonces Jefté contestó a los ancianos de Galaad: “¿No me odiaron y me echaron de la casa de mi padre? ¿Por qué, pues, han venido a mí ahora cuando están en apuros ?”

And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, Did not ye hate me and expel me out of my father’s house? Why, therefore, are ye come unto me now when ye are in distress?

8 Y los ancianos de Galaad dijeron a Jefté: “Por esta causa hemos vuelto a ti: para que vengas con nosotros y pelees contra los Amonitas y seas jefe sobre todos los habitantes de Galaad.”

And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah, For this same reason we turn again to thee now that thou may go with us and fight against the sons of Ammon and be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.

9 J efté respondió a los ancianos de Galaad: “Si me hacen volver para pelear contra los Amonitas y el Señor me los entrega, ¿seré yo el jefe de ustedes?”

Then Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, If ye bring me home again to fight against the sons of Ammon and the LORD delivers them before me, shall I be your head?

10 Y los ancianos de Galaad dijeron a Jefté: “El Señor es testigo entre nosotros. Ciertamente haremos como has dicho.”

And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah, Let the LORD hear between us, if we do not comply with thy words.

11 E ntonces Jefté fue con los ancianos de Galaad, y el pueblo lo hizo cabeza y jefe sobre ellos. Y Jefté habló todas sus palabras delante del Señor en Mizpa.

Then Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and prince over them; and Jephthah spoke all his words before the LORD in Mizpeh.

12 Y envió Jefté mensajeros al rey de los Amonitas para que le dijeran: “¿Qué hay entre usted y yo, que ha venido a mí para pelear contra mi tierra?”

¶ And Jephthah sent ambassadors unto the king of the sons of Ammon, saying, What hast thou to do with me that thou art come against me to fight in my land?

13 E l rey de los Amonitas dijo a los mensajeros de Jefté: “Porque Israel tomó mi tierra, cuando subieron de Egipto, desde el Arnón hasta el Jaboc y el Jordán; por tanto devuélvela ahora en paz.”

And the king of the sons of Ammon replied unto the ambassadors of Jephthah, Because Israel took away my land, when they came up out of Egypt, from Arnon even unto Jabbok and unto the Jordan; now, therefore, restore those lands again peaceably.

14 P ero Jefté volvió a enviar mensajeros al rey de los Amonitas,

Then Jephthah sent ambassadors again unto the king of the sons of Ammon,

15 q ue le dijeron: “Así dice Jefté: ‘Israel no tomó la tierra de Moab, ni la tierra de los Amonitas.

saying unto him, Thus hath Jephthah said, Israel did not take land from Moab, nor land from the sons of Ammon,

16 P orque cuando subieron de Egipto, e Israel pasó por el desierto hasta el Mar Rojo y llegó a Cades,

but Israel came up from Egypt and walked through the wilderness unto the Red sea and came to Kadesh.

17 e ntonces Israel envió mensajeros al rey de Edom diciéndole: “Permítanos, le rogamos, pasar por su tierra,” pero el rey de Edom no los escuchó. También enviaron mensajeros al rey de Moab pero él no consintió, así que Israel permaneció en Cades.

Then Israel sent messengers unto the king of Edom, saying, Let me, I pray thee, pass through thy land. But the king of Edom would not hear them. And in like manner they sent unto the king of Moab, but he would not consent either; therefore Israel abode in Kadesh.

18 L uego atravesaron el desierto y rodearon la tierra de Edom y de Moab, llegaron al lado oriental de la tierra de Moab y acamparon al otro lado del Arnón; pero no entraron en el territorio de Moab, porque el Arnón era la frontera de Moab.

Then they went along through the wilderness and went around the land of Edom and the land of Moab and came by the side of the rising of the sun to the land of Moab; they pitched their camp on the other side of Arnon and did not enter within the border of Moab, for Arnon was the border of Moab.

19 E ntonces Israel envió mensajeros a Sehón, rey de los Amorreos, rey de Hesbón, y le dijo Israel: “Permítanos, le rogamos, pasar por su tierra a nuestro lugar.”

And Israel sent messengers unto Sihon, king of the Amorites, the king of Heshbon; and Israel said unto him, Let us pass, we pray thee, through thy land into my place.

20 P ero Sehón no confió en Israel para darle paso por su territorio. Reunió, pues, Sehón a todo su pueblo y acampó en Jahaza, y peleó contra Israel.

But Sihon did not trust Israel to pass through his border; but Sihon gathered all his people together and pitched camp in Jahaz and fought against Israel.

21 E l Señor, Dios de Israel, entregó a Sehón y a todo su pueblo en manos de Israel, y los derrotaron, e Israel tomó posesión de toda la tierra de los Amorreos, los habitantes de esa región.

But the LORD God of Israel delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they smote them; so Israel possessed all the land of the Amorite that inhabited that land.

22 Y poseyeron todo el territorio de los Amorreos desde el Arnón hasta el Jaboc, y desde el desierto hasta el Jordán.

And they possessed all the border of the Amorites from Arnon even unto Jabbok and from the wilderness even unto the Jordan.

23 P uesto que el Señor, Dios de Israel, expulsó a los Amorreos de delante de su pueblo Israel, ¿va usted a poseerla?

So now the LORD God of Israel has expelled the Amorites from before his people Israel and should thou possess it?

24 ¿ No posee usted lo que Quemos, su dios, le ha dado para poseer? De modo que todo el territorio que el Señor nuestro Dios ha desposeído delante de nosotros, lo poseeremos.

If Chemosh thy god should expel anyone for you, would thou not possess it? So whoever the LORD our God shall drive out from before us, them will we possess.

25 A hora pues, ¿es usted mejor que Balac, hijo de Zipor, rey de Moab ? ¿Acaso luchó él con Israel, o acaso peleó contra ellos?

Art thou better now in any thing than Balak, the son of Zippor, king of Moab? Peradventure did he ever strive against Israel? Peradventure did he ever fight against them?

26 M ientras Israel habitaba en Hesbón y sus pueblos, y en Aroer y sus aldeas, y en todas las ciudades que están a orillas del Arnón por, 300 años, ¿por qué no las recuperó durante ese tiempo?

Furthermore, Israel has dwelt in Heshbon and her towns and in Aroer and her towns and in all the cities that are along by the coasts of Arnon, for three hundred years. Why, therefore, did ye not recover them within that time?

27 P or tanto, yo no he pecado contra usted, pero usted me está haciendo mal al hacer guerra contra mí. Que el Señor, el Juez, juzgue hoy entre los Israelitas y los Amonitas.’”

Therefore, I have not sinned against thee, but thou doest me wrong to war against me; let the LORD, who is the Judge, judge this day between the sons of Israel and the sons of Ammon.

28 P ero el rey de los Amonitas no hizo caso al mensaje que Jefté le envió. Voto y Victoria de Jefté

But the king of the sons of Ammon did not hear the reasons of Jephthah which he sent him.

29 E l Espíritu del Señor vino sobre Jefté. Entonces Jefté pasó por Galaad y Manasés. Luego pasó por Mizpa de Galaad, y de Mizpa de Galaad fue adonde estaban los Amonitas.

¶ Then the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jephthah, and he passed through Gilead and Manasseh and passed through Mizpeh of Gilead, and from Mizpeh of Gilead he went unto the sons of Ammon.

30 Y Jefté hizo un voto al Señor, y dijo: “Si en verdad entregas en mis manos a los Amonitas,

And Jephthah vowed a vow unto the LORD and said, If thou shalt without fail deliver the sons of Ammon into my hands,

31 s ucederá que cualquiera que salga de las puertas de mi casa a recibirme cuando yo vuelva en paz de los Amonitas, será del Señor, o lo ofreceré como holocausto.”

whoever comes forth of the doors of my house to meet me when I return in peace from the sons of Ammon shall surely be the LORD’s, and I will offer them up for a burnt offering.

32 J efté cruzó adonde estaban los Amonitas para pelear contra ellos, y el Señor los entregó en su mano.

So Jephthah went over unto the sons of Ammon to fight against them, and the LORD delivered them into his hands.

33 Y los hirió con una gran matanza desde Aroer hasta la entrada de Minit, veinte ciudades, hasta Abel Keramim. Y los Amonitas fueron sometidos delante de los Israelitas.

And he smote them from Aroer, even unto Minnith twenty cities, and unto the plain of the vineyards, with a very great slaughter. Thus the sons of Ammon were subdued before the sons of Israel.

34 C uando Jefté llegó a su casa en Mizpa, su hija salió a recibirlo con panderos y con danzas. Ella era su única hija. Fuera de ella no tenía hijo ni hija.

And Jephthah came to Mizpeh unto his house, and, behold, his daughter came out to meet him with timbrels and with dances; and she was his only child; beside her he had neither son nor daughter.

35 A l verla, él rasgó sus ropas y dijo: “¡Ay, hija mía! Me has abatido y estás entre los que me afligen. Porque he dado mi palabra al Señor, y no me puedo retractar.”

And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he rent his clothes and said, Alas, my daughter! thou hast brought me very low, and thou art one of those that trouble me, for I have opened my mouth unto the LORD, and I cannot go back.

36 E ntonces ella le dijo: “Padre mío, has dado tu palabra al Señor. Haz conmigo conforme a lo que has dicho, ya que el Señor te ha vengado de tus enemigos, los Amonitas.”

And she said unto him, My father, if thou hast opened thy mouth unto the LORD, do to me according to that which has proceeded out of thy mouth, forasmuch as the LORD has taken vengeance for thee of thine enemies, even of the sons of Ammon.

37 Y ella dijo a su padre: “Que se haga esto por mí; déjame sola por dos meses, para que vaya yo a los montes y llore por mi virginidad, yo y mis compañeras.”

And she said again unto her father, Let this thing be done for me; let me alone two months, that I may go up and down upon the mountains and bewail my virginity, I and my companions.

38 Y él dijo: “Ve,” y la dejó ir por dos meses; y ella se fue con sus compañeras, y lloró su virginidad por los montes.

And he said, Go. And he sent her away for two months, and she went with her companions and bewailed her virginity upon the mountains.

39 A l cabo de los dos meses ella regresó a su padre, que cumplió con ella conforme al voto que había hecho; y ella no tuvo relaciones con ningún hombre. Y se hizo costumbre en Israel,

And it came to pass at the end of two months that she returned unto her father, who did with her according to his vow which he had vowed. And she had never known a man. From here came the custom in Israel

40 q ue de año en año las hijas de Israel fueran cuatro días en el año a conmemorar a la hija de Jefté el Galaadita.

that the daughters of Israel went yearly to lament the daughter of Jephthah, the Gileadite, four days in a year.
