1 И еффай Галаадитянин был человек храбрый. Он был сын блудницы; от Галаада родился Иеффай.

¶ Now Jephthah existed then, a Gileadite, a mighty man of valour, the son of a harlot unto whom Gilead had begat a son.

2 И жена Галаадова родила ему сыновей. Когда возмужали сыновья жены, изгнали они Иеффая, сказав ему: ты не наследник в доме отца нашего, потому что ты сын другой женщины.

And Gilead’s wife bore him sons; and when his wife’s sons grew up, they threw Jephthah out and said unto him, Thou shalt not inherit in our father’s house, for thou art the son of a strange woman.

3 И убежал Иеффай от братьев своих и жил в земле Тов; и собрались к Иеффаю праздные люди и выходили с ним.

Then Jephthah fled from his brethren and dwelt in the land of Tob; and vain men joined themselves to Jephthah and went out with him.

4 Ч рез несколько времени Аммонитяне пошли войною на Израиля.

¶ And it came to pass after some days that the sons of Ammon made war against Israel.

5 В о время войны Аммонитян с Израильтянами пришли старейшины Галаадские взять Иеффая из земли Тов

And when the sons of Ammon made war against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to fetch Jephthah out of the land of Tob;

6 и сказали Иеффаю: приди, будь у нас вождем, и сразимся с Аммонитянами.

and they said unto Jephthah, Come, and thou shalt be our captain that we may fight with the sons of Ammon.

7 И еффай сказал старейшинам Галаадским: не вы ли возненавидели меня и выгнали из дома отца моего? зачем же пришли ко мне ныне, когда вы в беде?

And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, Did not ye hate me and expel me out of my father’s house? Why, therefore, are ye come unto me now when ye are in distress?

8 С тарейшины Галаадские сказали Иеффаю: для того мы теперь пришли к тебе, чтобы ты пошел с нами и сразился с Аммонитянами и был у нас начальником всех жителей Галаадских.

And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah, For this same reason we turn again to thee now that thou may go with us and fight against the sons of Ammon and be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.

9 И сказал Иеффай старейшинам Галаадским: если вы возвратите меня, чтобы сразиться с Аммонитянами, и Господь предаст мне их, то останусь ли я у вас начальником?

Then Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, If ye bring me home again to fight against the sons of Ammon and the LORD delivers them before me, shall I be your head?

10 С тарейшины Галаадские сказали Иеффаю: Господь да будет свидетелем между нами, что мы сделаем по слову твоему!

And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah, Let the LORD hear between us, if we do not comply with thy words.

11 И пошел Иеффай со старейшинами Галаадскими, и народ поставил его над собою начальником и вождем, и Иеффай произнес все слова свои пред лицем Господа в Массифе.

Then Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and prince over them; and Jephthah spoke all his words before the LORD in Mizpeh.

12 И послал Иеффай послов к царю Аммонитскому сказать: что тебе до меня, что ты пришел ко мне воевать на земле моей?

¶ And Jephthah sent ambassadors unto the king of the sons of Ammon, saying, What hast thou to do with me that thou art come against me to fight in my land?

13 Ц арь Аммонитский сказал послам Иеффая: Израиль, когда шел из Египта, взял землю мою от Арнона до Иавока и Иордана; итак возврати мне ее с миром.

And the king of the sons of Ammon replied unto the ambassadors of Jephthah, Because Israel took away my land, when they came up out of Egypt, from Arnon even unto Jabbok and unto the Jordan; now, therefore, restore those lands again peaceably.

14 И еффай в другой раз послал послов к царю Аммонитскому,

Then Jephthah sent ambassadors again unto the king of the sons of Ammon,

15 с казать ему: так говорит Иеффай: Израиль не взял земли Моавитской и земли Аммонитской;

saying unto him, Thus hath Jephthah said, Israel did not take land from Moab, nor land from the sons of Ammon,

16 и бо когда шли из Египта, Израиль пошел в пустыню к Чермному морю и пришел в Кадес;

but Israel came up from Egypt and walked through the wilderness unto the Red sea and came to Kadesh.

17 о ттуда послал Израиль послов к царю Едомскому сказать: 'позволь мне пройти землею твоею'; но царь Едомский не послушал; и к царю Моавитскому он посылал, но и тот не согласился; посему Израиль оставался в Кадесе.

Then Israel sent messengers unto the king of Edom, saying, Let me, I pray thee, pass through thy land. But the king of Edom would not hear them. And in like manner they sent unto the king of Moab, but he would not consent either; therefore Israel abode in Kadesh.

18 И пошел пустынею, и миновал землю Едомскую и землю Моавитскую, и, придя к восточному пределу земли Моавитской, расположился станом за Арноном; но не входил в пределы Моавитские, ибо Арнон есть предел Моава.

Then they went along through the wilderness and went around the land of Edom and the land of Moab and came by the side of the rising of the sun to the land of Moab; they pitched their camp on the other side of Arnon and did not enter within the border of Moab, for Arnon was the border of Moab.

19 И послал Израиль послов к Сигону, царю Аморрейскому, царю Есевонскому, и сказал ему Израиль: позволь нам пройти землею твоею в свое место.

And Israel sent messengers unto Sihon, king of the Amorites, the king of Heshbon; and Israel said unto him, Let us pass, we pray thee, through thy land into my place.

20 Н о Сигон не согласился пропустить Израиля чрез пределы свои, и собрал Сигон весь народ свой, и расположился станом в Иааце, и сразился с Израилем.

But Sihon did not trust Israel to pass through his border; but Sihon gathered all his people together and pitched camp in Jahaz and fought against Israel.

21 И предал Господь Бог Израилев Сигона и весь народ его в руки Израилю, и он побил их; и получил Израиль в наследие всю землю Аморрея, жившего в земле той;

But the LORD God of Israel delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they smote them; so Israel possessed all the land of the Amorite that inhabited that land.

22 и получили они в наследие все пределы Аморрея от Арнона до Иавока и от пустыни до Иордана.

And they possessed all the border of the Amorites from Arnon even unto Jabbok and from the wilderness even unto the Jordan.

23 И так Господь Бог Израилев изгнал Аморрея от лица народа Своего Израиля, а ты хочешь взять его наследие?

So now the LORD God of Israel has expelled the Amorites from before his people Israel and should thou possess it?

24 Н е владеешь ли ты тем, что дал тебе Хамос, бог твой? И мы владеем всем тем, что дал нам в наследие Господь Бог наш.

If Chemosh thy god should expel anyone for you, would thou not possess it? So whoever the LORD our God shall drive out from before us, them will we possess.

25 Р азве ты лучше Валака, сына Сепфорова, царя Моавитского? Ссорился ли он с Израилем, или воевал ли с ними?

Art thou better now in any thing than Balak, the son of Zippor, king of Moab? Peradventure did he ever strive against Israel? Peradventure did he ever fight against them?

26 И зраиль уже живет триста лет в Есевоне и в зависящих от него, в Ароере и зависящих от него, и во всех городах, которые близ Арнона; для чего вы в то время не отнимали ?

Furthermore, Israel has dwelt in Heshbon and her towns and in Aroer and her towns and in all the cities that are along by the coasts of Arnon, for three hundred years. Why, therefore, did ye not recover them within that time?

27 А я не виновен пред тобою, и ты делаешь мне зло, выступив против меня войною. Господь Судия да будет ныне судьею между сынами Израиля и между Аммонитянами!

Therefore, I have not sinned against thee, but thou doest me wrong to war against me; let the LORD, who is the Judge, judge this day between the sons of Israel and the sons of Ammon.

28 Н о царь Аммонитский не послушал слов Иеффая, с которыми он посылал к нему.

But the king of the sons of Ammon did not hear the reasons of Jephthah which he sent him.

29 И был на Иеффае Дух Господень, и прошел он Галаад и Манассию, и прошел Массифу Галаадскую, и из Массифы Галаадской пошел к Аммонитянам.

¶ Then the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jephthah, and he passed through Gilead and Manasseh and passed through Mizpeh of Gilead, and from Mizpeh of Gilead he went unto the sons of Ammon.

30 И дал Иеффай обет Господу и сказал: если Ты предашь Аммонитян в руки мои,

And Jephthah vowed a vow unto the LORD and said, If thou shalt without fail deliver the sons of Ammon into my hands,

31 т о по возвращении моем с миром от Аммонитян, что выйдет из ворот дома моего навстречу мне, будет Господу, и вознесу сие на всесожжение.

whoever comes forth of the doors of my house to meet me when I return in peace from the sons of Ammon shall surely be the LORD’s, and I will offer them up for a burnt offering.

32 И пришел Иеффай к Аммонитянам--сразиться с ними, и предал их Господь в руки его;

So Jephthah went over unto the sons of Ammon to fight against them, and the LORD delivered them into his hands.

33 и поразил их поражением весьма великим, от Ароера до Минифа двадцать городов, и до Авель-Керамима, и смирились Аммонитяне пред сынами Израилевыми.

And he smote them from Aroer, even unto Minnith twenty cities, and unto the plain of the vineyards, with a very great slaughter. Thus the sons of Ammon were subdued before the sons of Israel.

34 И пришел Иеффай в Массифу в дом свой, и вот, дочь его выходит навстречу ему с тимпанами и ликами: она была у него только одна, и не было у него еще ни сына, ни дочери.

And Jephthah came to Mizpeh unto his house, and, behold, his daughter came out to meet him with timbrels and with dances; and she was his only child; beside her he had neither son nor daughter.

35 К огда он увидел ее, разодрал одежду свою и сказал: ах, дочь моя! ты сразила меня; и ты в числе нарушителей покоя моего! я отверз уста мои пред Господом и не могу отречься.

And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he rent his clothes and said, Alas, my daughter! thou hast brought me very low, and thou art one of those that trouble me, for I have opened my mouth unto the LORD, and I cannot go back.

36 О на сказала ему: отец мой! ты отверз уста твои пред Господом--и делай со мною то, что произнесли уста твои, когда Господь совершил чрез тебя отмщение врагам твоим Аммонитянам.

And she said unto him, My father, if thou hast opened thy mouth unto the LORD, do to me according to that which has proceeded out of thy mouth, forasmuch as the LORD has taken vengeance for thee of thine enemies, even of the sons of Ammon.

37 И сказала отцу своему: сделай мне только вот что: отпусти меня на два месяца; я пойду, взойду на горы и оплачу девство мое с подругами моими.

And she said again unto her father, Let this thing be done for me; let me alone two months, that I may go up and down upon the mountains and bewail my virginity, I and my companions.

38 О н сказал: пойди. И отпустил ее на два месяца. Она пошла с подругами своими и оплакивала девство свое в горах.

And he said, Go. And he sent her away for two months, and she went with her companions and bewailed her virginity upon the mountains.

39 П о прошествии двух месяцев она возвратилась к отцу своему, и он совершил над нею обет свой, который дал, и она не познала мужа. И вошло в обычай у Израиля,

And it came to pass at the end of two months that she returned unto her father, who did with her according to his vow which he had vowed. And she had never known a man. From here came the custom in Israel

40 ч то ежегодно дочери Израилевы ходили оплакивать дочь Иеффая Галаадитянина, четыре дня в году.

that the daughters of Israel went yearly to lament the daughter of Jephthah, the Gileadite, four days in a year.
