1 A conteció un día, que Jonatán hijo de Saúl, dijo al criado que le traía las armas: «Ven y pasemos a la guarnición de los filisteos, que está de aquel lado.» Pero no lo hizo saber a su padre.

¶ Now it came to pass upon a day that Jonathan, the son of Saul, said unto the young man that bore his armour, Come and let us go over to the Philistines’ garrison that is on the other side. But he did not tell his father.

2 S aúl se hallaba al extremo de Gabaa, debajo de un granado que hay en Migrón, y las gentes que estaban con él eran como seiscientos hombres.

And Saul tarried in the uttermost part of Gibeah under a pomegranate tree which is in Migron, and the people that were with him were about six hundred men;

3 A hías hijo de Ahitob, hermano de Icabod hijo de Finees hijo de Elí, sacerdote de Jehová en Silo, llevaba el efod. El pueblo no sabía que Jonatán se había ido.

and Ahiah, the son of Ahitub, Ichabod’s brother, the son of Phinehas, the son of Eli, the LORD’s priest in Shiloh, was wearing the ephod. And the people did not know that Jonathan was gone.

4 E ntre los desfiladeros por donde Jonatán procuraba pasar a la guarnición de los filisteos, había un peñasco agudo de un lado, y otro del otro lado; uno se llamaba Boses y el otro Sene.

And between the passages by which Jonathan sought to go over unto the Philistines’ garrison, there was a sharp rock on the one side and a sharp rock on the other side; and the name of the one was Bozez and the name of the other Seneh.

5 E l primer peñasco estaba situado al norte, hacia Micmas, y el segundo al sur, hacia Gabaa.

The forefront of the one was situated northward over against Michmash and the other towards the Negev over against Gibeah.

6 D ijo, pues, Jonatán a su paje de armas: —Ven, pasemos a la guarnición de estos incircuncisos; quizá haga algo Jehová por nosotros, pues no es difícil para Jehová dar la victoria, sea con muchos o con pocos.

And Jonathan said to the young man that bore his armour, Come and let us go over unto the garrison of these uncircumcised; peradventure the LORD will work for us, for it is not difficult for the LORD to save by many or by few.

7 S u paje de armas le respondió: —Haz todo lo que tu corazón te dicte; ve, pues aquí estoy a tu disposición.

And his armourbearer said unto him, Do all that is in thy heart; go. Behold, I am with thee according to thy will.

8 D ijo entonces Jonatán: —Vamos a pasar hacia esos hombres para que ellos nos vean.

Then Jonathan said, Behold, we will go over unto these men, and we will show ourselves unto them.

9 S i nos dicen: “Esperad hasta que lleguemos a vosotros”, entonces nos quedaremos en nuestro lugar, y no subiremos adonde están ellos.

If they say thus unto us, Tarry until we come to you, then we will stand still in our place and will not go up unto them.

10 P ero si nos dicen: “Subid hacia nosotros”, entonces subiremos, porque Jehová los ha entregado en nuestras manos; esto nos servirá de señal.

But if they say thus, Come up unto us, then we will go up, for the LORD has delivered them into our hand, and this shall be a sign unto us.

11 L os dos se dejaron ver por la guarnición de los filisteos, y estos dijeron: «Mirad a los hebreos que salen de las cavernas donde se habían escondido.»

And both of them showed themselves unto the garrison of the Philistines; and the Philistines said, Behold, the Hebrews come forth out of the holes where they had hid themselves.

12 Y los hombres de la guarnición, dirigiéndose a Jonatán y a su paje de armas, les dijeron: «Subid a nosotros, y os haremos saber una cosa.» Entonces Jonatán dijo a su paje de armas: «Sube detrás de mí, porque Jehová los ha entregado en manos de Israel.»

And the men of the garrison answered Jonathan and his armourbearer and said, Come up to us, and we will show you a thing. Then Jonathan said unto his armourbearer, Come up after me, for the LORD has delivered them into the hand of Israel.

13 S ubió Jonatán trepando con sus manos y sus pies, seguido de su paje de armas. A los que caían delante de Jonatán, su paje de armas, que iba detrás de él, los remataba.

And Jonathan climbed up upon his hands and upon his feet and his armourbearer after him; and they fell before Jonathan, and his armourbearer slew after him.

14 E n esta primera matanza que hicieron Jonatán y su paje de armas cayeron como veinte hombres, y todo en el espacio de una media yugada de tierra.

And that first slaughter which Jonathan and his armourbearer made was about twenty men within as it were a half acre of land, which a yoke of oxen might plow.

15 C undió el pánico en el campamento y por el campo, y entre toda la gente de la guarnición; a los que habían salido en la avanzada también los asaltó el pánico, y la tierra tembló; hubo, pues, gran consternación.

And there was trembling in the host, in the field, and among all the people of the garrison; and those who had gone out to destroy the land, they also trembled, and the earth quaked, and there was fear of God.

16 L os centinelas de Saúl vieron desde Gabaa de Benjamín cómo la multitud estaba turbada, iba de un lado a otro y se dispersaba.

¶ And the watchmen of Saul in Gibeah of Benjamin looked, and, behold, the multitude melted away, and they went on beating down one another.

17 E ntonces Saúl dijo al pueblo que estaba con él: «Pasad ahora revista y ved quién se haya ido de los nuestros.» Pasaron revista, y vieron que faltaban Jonatán y su paje de armas.

Then Saul said unto the people that were with him, Number now and see who is gone from us. And when they had numbered, behold, Jonathan and his armourbearer were not there.

18 E ntonces Saúl dijo a Ahías: «Trae el Arca de Dios.» Porque el Arca de Dios estaba entonces con los hijos de Israel.

And Saul said unto Ahiah, Bring the ark of God. For the ark of God was at that time with the sons of Israel.

19 P ero aconteció que mientras aún hablaba Saúl con el sacerdote, el alboroto que había en el campamento de los filisteos aumentaba, e iba creciendo cada vez más. Entonces dijo Saúl al sacerdote: «Detén tu mano.»

And it came to pass while Saul talked unto the priest, that the noise that was in the host of the Philistines went on and increased. Then Saul said unto the priest, Withdraw thy hand.

20 L uego Saúl reunió a todo el pueblo que con él estaba y llegaron hasta el lugar de la batalla. Allí vieron que cada uno había desenvainado su espada contra su compañero y que había gran confusión.

And Saul and all the people that were with him assembled themselves, and they came to the battle; and, behold, each man’s sword was against his fellow, and there was a very great discomfiture.

21 L os hebreos que desde tiempo antes habían estado con los filisteos, y que desde los alrededores habían subido con ellos al campamento, se pusieron también del lado de los israelitas que estaban con Saúl y con Jonatán.

Moreover, the Hebrews that had been with the Philistines before that time, who had gone up with them into the camp from the country round about, even they also turned to be with the Israelites that were with Saul and Jonathan.

22 A simismo todos los israelitas que se habían escondido en los montes de Efraín, al oír que los filisteos huían, también los persiguieron en aquella batalla,

Likewise all the men of Israel who had hid themselves in Mount Ephraim, when they heard that the Philistines fled, they also followed hard after them in the battle.

23 q ue se extendió hasta Bet-Avén. Así salvó Jehová aquel día a Israel.

So the LORD saved Israel that day; and the battle passed over unto Bethaven.

24 P ero los hombres de Israel fueron puestos en apuro aquel día, porque Saúl había hecho jurar al pueblo, diciendo: «Cualquiera que coma pan antes de caer la noche, antes que me haya vengado de mis enemigos, sea maldito.» Y nadie había probado bocado.

¶ But the men of Israel were distressed that day, for Saul had adjured the people, saying, Cursed be the man that eats any food until evening that I may be avenged on my enemies. So none of the people tasted any food.

25 T odo el pueblo llegó a un bosque, donde había miel en la superficie del campo.

And the army of all the land came to a wood, and there was honey upon the ground.

26 E ntró, pues, el pueblo en el bosque, y vieron que allí corría la miel; pero no hubo quien la probara, porque el pueblo temía al juramento.

And when the people were come into the wood, behold, the honey dropped, but no man put his hand to his mouth, for the people feared the oath.

27 J onatán, que no había oído cuando su padre había hecho jurar al pueblo, alargó la punta de una vara que traía en su mano, la mojó en un panal de miel y se llevó la mano a la boca. Entonces se le aclararon los ojos.

But Jonathan had not heard when his father charged the people with the oath, therefore, he put forth the end of the rod that was in his hand and dipped it in a honeycomb and put his hand to his mouth, and his eyes were enlightened.

28 U no del pueblo le habló, diciendo: —Tu padre ha hecho jurar solemnemente al pueblo: “Maldito sea el hombre que tome hoy alimento.” Y el pueblo desfallecía.

Then one of the people spoke and said, Thy father straitly charged the people with an oath, saying, Cursed be the man that eats any food this day. And the people were faint.

29 R espondió Jonatán: —Mi padre ha turbado al país. Ved ahora cómo han sido aclarados mis ojos por haber probado un poco de esta miel.

Then Jonathan said, My father has troubled the land. See, I pray you, how my eyes have been enlightened because I tasted a little of this honey.

30 ¿ Cuánto más si el pueblo hubiera comido libremente hoy del botín tomado a sus enemigos? ¿No hubiera sido mayor el estrago entre los filisteos?

How much more if haply the people had eaten freely today of the spoil of their enemies which they found? Would there not have been now a much greater slaughter among the Philistines?

31 A quel día derrotaron a los filisteos desde Micmas hasta Ajalón, pero el pueblo estaba muy cansado.

And they smote the Philistines that day from Michmash to Aijalon, but the people were very faint.

32 A sí que el pueblo se lanzó sobre el botín, tomaron ovejas y vacas y becerros, y los degollaron en el suelo; y el pueblo los comió con la sangre.

Therefore, the people flew upon the spoil and took sheep and oxen and calves and slew them on the ground, and the people ate them with the blood.

33 E ntonces le avisaron a Saúl: —El pueblo está pecando contra Jehová, porque come carne con sangre. Él dijo: —¡Vosotros habéis sido infieles! Rodadme ahora acá una piedra grande.

Then they told Saul, saying, Behold, the people sin against the LORD in that they eat with the blood. And he said, Ye have transgressed; roll a great stone unto me this day.

34 E sparcíos por el pueblo —añadió—, y decidles que me traiga cada uno su vaca y cada cual su oveja; degolladlas aquí y comed, sin pecar contra Jehová por comer la carne con la sangre. Aquella noche cada uno llevó su propio buey y lo sacrificaron allí.

And Saul said, Disperse yourselves among the people and tell each one to bring his ox and his sheep here unto me and slay them here and eat and do not sin against the LORD in eating with the blood. And of all the people, each one brought his ox with him that night and slew them there.

35 E dificó Saúl un altar a Jehová, y ése fue el primero que edificó a Jehová.

And Saul built an altar unto the LORD; the same was the first altar that he built unto the LORD.

36 D ijo Saúl: —Descendamos esta noche contra los filisteos y los saquearemos hasta la mañana; no dejaremos de ellos ninguno. Ellos dijeron: —Haz lo que bien te parezca. Dijo luego el sacerdote: —Acerquémonos aquí a Dios.

¶ And Saul said, Let us go down after the Philistines by night and spoil them until the morning light, and let us not leave a man of them. And they said, Do whatever seems good unto thee. Then the priest said, Let us draw near unto God here.

37 Y Saúl consultó a Dios: «¿Debo descender tras los filisteos? ¿Los entregarás en manos de Israel?» Pero Jehová no le dio respuesta aquel día.

And Saul asked counsel of God, Shall I go down after the Philistines? Wilt thou deliver them into the hand of Israel? But he did not answer him that day.

38 E ntonces dijo Saúl: —Venid acá todos los principales del pueblo, averiguad y ved en qué ha consistido este pecado de hoy.

Then Saul said, Bring here all the chief of the people and know and see by whom this sin has been this day.

39 ¡ Vive Jehová!, que ha salvado a Israel, que aunque se trate de mi hijo Jonatán, de seguro morirá. Y no hubo en todo el pueblo quien le respondiera.

For, as the LORD lives, who saves Israel, though it be in Jonathan, my son, he shall surely die. But there was not a man among all the people that answered him.

40 D ijo luego a todo Israel: —Vosotros estaréis a un lado, y yo y Jonatán, mi hijo, estaremos al otro lado. —Haz lo que bien te parezca —respondió el pueblo a Saúl.

Then he said unto all Israel, Be ye on one side, and I and Jonathan my son will be on the other side. And the people said unto Saul, Do what seems good unto thee.

41 E ntonces dijo Saúl a Jehová, Dios de Israel: —Da a conocer la verdad. La suerte cayó sobre Jonatán y Saúl, y el pueblo quedó libre.

Therefore, Saul said unto the LORD God of Israel, Show who is without blemish. And Saul and Jonathan were taken, but the people went out free.

42 S aúl dijo: —Echad suertes entre mí y mi hijo Jonatán. Y la suerte cayó sobre Jonatán.

And Saul said, Cast lots between me and Jonathan my son. And Jonathan was taken.

43 E ntonces Saúl dijo a Jonatán: —Cuéntame lo que has hecho. Jonatán respondió: —Ciertamente gusté un poco de miel con la punta de la vara que traía en mi mano; ¿y he de morir?

Then Saul said to Jonathan, Tell me what thou hast done. And Jonathan told him, and said, I did but taste a little honey with the end of the rod that was in my hand; must I die for this.

44 S aúl le dijo: —Traiga Dios sobre mí el peor de los castigos, si no te hago morir, Jonatán.

And Saul answered, God do so and more also, for thou shalt surely die, Jonathan.

45 P ero el pueblo dijo a Saúl: —¿Ha de morir Jonatán, el que ha logrado esta gran victoria en Israel? ¡No será así! ¡Vive Jehová! que no caerá en tierra ni un cabello de su cabeza, pues lo hizo con ayuda de Dios. Así el pueblo libró de morir a Jonatán.

Then the people said unto Saul, Shall Jonathan die, who has wrought this great saving health in Israel? No, in no wise: as the LORD lives, there shall not one hair of his head fall to the ground, for he has wrought with God this day. So the people rescued Jonathan that he did not die.

46 S aúl dejó de perseguir a los filisteos, y los filisteos se fueron a su tierra.

Then Saul went up from following the Philistines, and the Philistines went to their own place.

47 D espués de haber tomado posesión del reino de Israel, Saúl hizo guerra a todos sus enemigos en derredor: contra Moab, contra los hijos de Amón, contra Edom, contra los reyes de Soba y contra los filisteos; dondequiera que iba, salía vencedor.

¶ So Saul took the kingdom over Israel and fought against all his enemies on every side, against Moab and against the sons of Ammon and against Edom and against the kings of Zobah and against the Philistines; and wherever he turned himself, he troubled them.

48 R eunió un ejército, derrotó a Amalec y libró a Israel de manos de los que lo saqueaban.

And he gathered a host and smote Amalek and delivered Israel out of the hands of those that spoiled them.

49 L os hijos de Saúl fueron Jonatán, Isúi y Malquisúa. Los nombres de sus dos hijas eran, el de la mayor, Merab, y el de la menor, Mical.

Now the sons of Saul were Jonathan and Ishui and Melchishua. And the names of his two daughters were these: the name of the firstborn Merab and the name of the younger Michal.

50 E l nombre de la mujer de Saúl era Ahinoam, hija de Ahimaas. El nombre del general de su ejército era Abner hijo de Ner, tío de Saúl.

And the name of Saul’s wife was Ahinoam, the daughter of Ahimaaz. And the name of the captain of his host was Abner, the son of Ner, Saul’s uncle.

51 P orque Cis, padre de Saúl, y Ner, padre de Abner, fueron hijos de Abiel.

For Kish was the father of Saul, and Ner, the father of Abner, was the son of Abiel.

52 T odo el tiempo de Saúl hubo guerra encarnizada contra los filisteos; y a todo el que Saúl veía que era hombre esforzado y apto para combatir, lo reclutaba para sí.

And there was intense war against the Philistines all the days of Saul, and when Saul saw any strong man or any valiant man, he took him unto him.
