1 D avid pasó revista al pueblo que tenía consigo y puso sobre ellos jefes de millar y jefes de centena.

¶ And David numbered the people that were with him, and set captains of thousands and captains of hundreds over them.

2 L uego envió David al pueblo, una tercera parte bajo el mando de Joab, una tercera parte bajo el mando de Abisai hijo de Sarvia, hermano de Joab, y una tercera parte al mando de Itai, el geteo. Y dijo el rey al pueblo: —Yo también saldré con vosotros.

And David sent forth a third part of the people under the hand of Joab and another third under the hand of Abishai, the son of Zeruiah, Joab’s brother, and the other third under the hand of Ittai, the Gittite. And the king said unto the people, I will surely go forth with you myself also.

3 P ero el pueblo respondió: —No saldrás; porque si nosotros huimos, no harán caso de nosotros; y aunque la mitad de nosotros muera, no harán caso de nosotros; pero tú ahora vales tanto como diez mil de nosotros. Será mejor que tú nos brindes ayuda desde la ciudad.

But the people answered, Thou shalt not go forth, for if we flee away, they will not care about us; nor if half of us die, will they care about us; but now thou art worth ten thousand of us. Therefore, now it is better that thou help us out of the city.

4 — Yo haré lo que bien os parezca —les dijo el rey. Se puso, pues, el rey a la entrada de la puerta, mientras salía todo el pueblo de ciento en ciento y de mil en mil.

Then the king said unto them, I will do what seems best unto you. And the king stood beside the gate, and all the people came out by hundreds and by thousands.

5 E l rey dio a Joab, a Abisai y a Itai esta orden: «Tratad benignamente, por amor a mí, al joven Absalón.» Y todo el pueblo oyó cuando dio el rey orden acerca de Absalón a todos los capitanes.

And the king commanded Joab and Abishai and Ittai, saying, Deal gently for my sake with the young man, even with Absalom. And all the people heard when the king gave all the captains charge concerning Absalom.

6 S alió, pues, el pueblo al campo, contra Israel. La batalla se libró en el bosque de Efraín.

So the people went out into the field against Israel, and the battle was in the forest of Ephraim,

7 A llí cayó el pueblo de Israel ante los siervos de David, y aquel día se hizo allí una gran matanza de veinte mil hombres.

where the people of Israel were slain before the slaves of David, and there was there a great slaughter that day of twenty thousand men.

8 L a batalla se extendió por todo el territorio, y aquel día el bosque causó más muertes que la espada.

For the battle was there scattered over the face of all the land, and the forest devoured more people that day than the sword devoured.

9 I ba Absalón en un mulo y se encontró con los siervos de David. El mulo entró por debajo de las ramas espesas de una gran encina, y se le enredó la cabeza en la encina a Absalón, que quedó suspendido entre el cielo y la tierra; pero el mulo en que iba siguió adelante.

¶ And Absalom met the slaves of David. And Absalom rode upon a mule, and the mule went under the thick boughs of a great oak, and his head caught hold of the oak, and he was taken up between the heaven and the earth; and the mule that was under him went away.

10 L o vio uno y avisó a Joab diciendo: —He visto a Absalón colgado de una encina.

And a certain man saw it and told Joab, saying, Behold, I saw Absalom hanged in an oak.

11 J oab respondió al hombre que le daba la noticia: —Y si lo viste, ¿por qué no lo mataste enseguida, derribándolo en tierra? Me hubiera placido darte diez siclos de plata y un cinturón.

And Joab replied unto the man that told him, Behold, when thou didst see him, why didst thou not smite him there to the ground? I would have given thee ten shekels of silver and a girdle.

12 E l hombre dijo a Joab: —Aunque me pesaras mil siclos de plata, no extendería yo mi mano contra el hijo del rey; porque nosotros oímos cuando el rey os ordenó a ti, a Abisai y a Itai: “Mirad que ninguno toque al joven Absalón.”

And the man said unto Joab, Though I should receive a thousand shekels of silver in my hand, yet I would not put forth my hand against the king’s son, for in our hearing the king charged thee and Abishai and Ittai, saying, Beware that no one touch the young man Absalom.

13 P or otra parte, habría yo hecho traición contra mi vida, pues al rey nada se le esconde, y tú mismo estarías en contra mía.

Otherwise, I should have wrought falsehood against my own soul (for there is no matter hid from the king), and thou thyself would have set thyself against me.

14 — No malgastaré mi tiempo contigo —respondió Joab. Y tomando tres dardos en su mano, los clavó en el corazón de Absalón, quien estaba aún vivo en medio de la encina.

Then Joab answered, I may not tarry thus with thee. And taking three darts in his hand, he thrust them through the heart of Absalom while he was yet alive in the midst of the oak.

15 L uego diez jóvenes escuderos de Joab rodearon a Absalón, lo hirieron y acabaron de matarlo.

And ten young men that bore Joab’s armour surrounded and smote Absalom and slew him.

16 E ntonces Joab tocó la trompeta, y el pueblo dejó de perseguir a Israel, porque Joab detuvo al pueblo.

Then Joab blew the shofar, and the people returned from pursuing after Israel, for Joab held back the people.

17 T omando después a Absalón, lo echaron en un gran hoyo en el bosque y levantaron sobre él un montón muy grande de piedras; y todo Israel huyó, cada uno a su tienda.

And they took Absalom and cast him into a great pit in the forest and laid a very great heap of stones upon him; and all Israel fled each one to his tent.

18 E n vida, Absalón había tomado la decisión de erigirse una columna, la cual está en el valle del rey, pues pensó: «Yo no tengo un hijo que conserve la memoria de mi nombre.» Y puso a aquella columna su propio nombre, y así se ha llamado «Columna de Absalón», hasta el día de hoy.

Now Absalom, while he was alive, had taken and reared up for himself a pillar, which is in the king’s valley; for he said, I have no son to keep my name in remembrance. And he called the pillar after his own name, and it is called unto this day, Absalom’s place.

19 E ntonces Ahimaas hijo de Sadoc dijo: —¿Correré ahora y daré al rey la noticia de que Jehová ha librado su causa de manos de sus enemigos?

¶ Then Ahimaaz, the son of Zadok, said, Let me now run and bear the king tidings, how that the LORD has vindicated him of his enemies.

20 R espondió Joab: —Hoy no llevarás la noticia; la llevarás otro día. Hoy no darás la noticia, porque el hijo del rey ha muerto.

And Joab said unto him, Thou shalt not bear tidings today, but thou shalt bear tidings another day; but this day thou shalt bear no tidings because the king’s son is dead.

21 — Ve tú, y di al rey lo que has visto —dijo Joab a un etíope. El etíope hizo una reverencia ante Joab y salió corriendo.

And Joab said to Cushi, Go tell the king what thou hast seen. And Cushi bowed himself unto Joab and ran.

22 E ntonces Ahimaas hijo de Sadoc volvió a decir a Joab: —De todos modos, yo correré ahora tras el etíope. Joab le dijo: —Hijo mío, ¿para qué has de correr tú, si no recibirás recompensa por la noticia?

Then Ahimaaz, the son of Zadok, said yet again unto Joab, Be what may, let me, I pray thee, also run after Cushi. And Joab said, Why wilt thou run, my son, seeing that thou wilt receive no reward for the tidings?

23 — De todos modos, yo correré —respondió él. —Pues corre —le dijo él. Corrió, pues, Ahimaas por el camino de la llanura y se adelantó al etíope.

But, said he, let me run, be what may. And he said unto him, Run. Then Ahimaaz ran by the way of the plain and overran Cushi.

24 D avid estaba sentado entre las dos puertas. El atalaya había ido al terrado sobre la puerta en el muro y, alzando sus ojos, miró y vio a uno que corría solo.

And David sat between the two gates, and the watchman went up to the roof over the gate unto the wall and lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold a man running alone.

25 E l atalaya dio un grito y lo hizo saber al rey, el cual dijo: —Si viene solo, buenas noticias trae. Mientras el hombre venía acercándose,

And the watchman cried and told the king. And the king said, If he is alone, he brings good news. And while he kept on drawing near,

26 v io el atalaya a otro que corría. Dio voces el atalaya al portero diciendo: «Ahí viene otro hombre corriendo solo.» —También éste es un mensajero —dijo el rey.

the watchman saw another man running, and the watchman called unto the porter and said, Behold another man running alone. And the king said, He also bringeth tidings.

27 E l atalaya dijo de nuevo: —Me parece que el primero corre como Ahimaas hijo de Sadoc. —Ése es hombre de bien y viene con buenas noticias —dijo entonces el rey.

And the watchman said, I think the running of the foremost is like the running of Ahimaaz, the son of Zadok. And the king said, He is a good man and comes with good tidings.

28 C uando Ahimaas se acercó, dijo al rey en alta voz: —Paz. Y postrándose en tierra delante del rey, le dijo: —Bendito sea Jehová, tu Dios, que ha entregado a los hombres que habían levantado sus manos contra mi señor, el rey.

And Ahimaaz called and said unto the king peace. And he fell down to the earth upon his face before the king, and said, Blessed be the LORD thy God, who has delivered up those men that lifted up their hand against my lord the king.

29 — ¿El joven Absalón está bien? —preguntó el rey. Ahimaas respondió: —Vi yo un gran alboroto cuando me envió Joab, el siervo del rey, pero no sé qué era.

And the king said, Is the young man Absalom at peace? And Ahimaaz answered, When Joab sent the king’s slave, and me thy slave, I saw a great tumult, but I did not know what it was.

30 — Pasa, y ponte allí —dijo el rey. Él pasó y se quedó de pie.

And the king said unto him, Turn aside and stand here. And he turned aside and stood still.

31 L legó luego el etíope, y dijo: —Traigo buenas noticias para mi señor, el rey: hoy Jehová ha librado tu causa de manos de todos los que se habían levantado contra ti.

And, behold, Cushi came; and Cushi said, Tidings, my lord the king, for the LORD has vindicated thee today of all those that rose up against thee.

32 E l rey preguntó entonces al etíope: —¿El joven Absalón está bien? El etíope respondió: —Que a los enemigos de mi señor les vaya como a aquel joven, y a todos los que se levanten contra ti para mal.

And the king said unto Cushi, Is the young man Absalom at peace? And Cushi answered, Let the enemies of my lord the king and all that rise against thee for evil, be as that young man.

33 E ntonces el rey se turbó, subió a la sala que estaba encima de la puerta y lloró. Mientras iba subiendo, decía: «¡Hijo mío Absalón, hijo mío, hijo mío Absalón! ¡Quién me diera haber muerto en tu lugar, Absalón, hijo mío, hijo mío!»

Then the king was much moved and went up to the chamber over the gate and wept; and as he went, he said this: O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! I would rather have died instead of thee, O Absalom, my son, my son!
