1 C uando Atalía, madre de Ocozías, vio que su hijo había muerto, se levantó y destruyó toda la descendencia real.

¶ And Athaliah, the mother of Ahaziah, seeing that her son was dead, arose and destroyed all the royal seed.

2 P ero Josaba, hija del rey Joram, hermana de Ocozías, tomó a Joás hijo de Ocozías y lo sacó furtivamente de entre los hijos del rey a quienes estaban matando, y junto con su nodriza lo ocultó de Atalía en el dormitorio, y de esta forma no lo mataron.

But Jehosheba, the daughter of king Joram, sister of Ahaziah, took Joash, the son of Ahaziah, and stole him from among the king’s sons which were slain; and they hid him, even him and his nurse, in the bedchamber from Athaliah, so that he was not slain.

3 S eis años estuvo escondido con ella en la casa de Jehová, mientras Atalía reinaba sobre el país.

And he was with her hid in the house of the LORD six years, and Athaliah was queen over the land.

4 P ero al séptimo año envió a llamar Joiada a los jefes de centena, capitanes y gente de la guardia, los metió consigo en la casa de Jehová. Hizo con ellos una alianza bajo juramento en la casa de Jehová, y les mostró al hijo del rey.

¶ But the seventh year Jehoiada sent and took rulers over hundreds, captains and people of the guard, and brought them to him into the house of the LORD and made a covenant with them, causing them to swear an oath in the house of the LORD, and he showed them the king’s son.

5 L uego les mandó: «Esto es lo que habéis de hacer: la tercera parte de vosotros estará de guardia de la casa del rey el sábado.

And he commanded them, saying, This is the thing that ye shall do; a third part of you that shall enter in on the sabbath shall be the keepers of the watch of the king’s house;

6 O tra tercera parte estará a la puerta de Shur, y la otra tercera parte a la puerta del cuartel de la guardia; así guardaréis la casa, para que no sea allanada.

and a third part shall be at the gate of Sur; and a third part at the gate behind the guard; so ye shall have the watch of the house of Mesah.

7 P ero las dos secciones de vosotros que salen de guardia el sábado tendréis la guardia de la casa de Jehová, junto al rey.

And two parts of all you that go forth on the sabbath, even they shall keep the watch of the house of the LORD about the king.

8 E staréis alrededor del rey por todos lados, cada uno con sus armas en la mano, y cualquiera que penetre en las filas, morirá. Acompañaréis al rey cuando salga y cuando entre.»

And ye shall compass the king round about, each man with his weapons in his hand; and he that comes within these orders shall be slain. Ye must be with the king as he goes out and as he comes in.

9 L os jefes de centenas hicieron todo como el sacerdote Joiada les había mandado. Cada uno tomó a los suyos, esto es, a los que entraban el sábado y a los que salían el sábado, y vinieron junto al sacerdote Joiada.

And the captains over the hundreds did according to all that Jehoiada, the priest, commanded; and each man took his men that were to come in on the sabbath with those that should go out on the sabbath and came to Jehoiada, the priest.

10 E l sacerdote dio a los jefes de centena las lanzas y los escudos que habían pertenecido al rey David y estaban en la casa de Jehová.

And the priest gave the captains over hundreds King David’s spears and shields that were in the house of the LORD.

11 L os de la guardia se pusieron en fila, cada uno con sus armas en la mano, desde el lado derecho hasta el lado izquierdo de la Casa, junto al altar y el Templo, alrededor del rey.

And the guard stood, each man with his weapons in his hand, round about the king, from the right corner of the house to the left corner of the house, next to the altar and the house.

12 S acó entonces Joiada al hijo del rey, le puso la corona y el Testimonio, y ungiéndolo lo hicieron rey. Luego batieron palmas y gritaron: «¡Viva el rey!»

Then he brought forth the king’s son and put the crown upon him and gave him the testimony, and they made him king by anointing him; and they clapped their hands and said, Long live the king.

13 C uando Atalía oyó el estruendo del pueblo que corría, entró al templo de Jehová, donde estaban todos.

¶ And when Athaliah heard the noise of the people running, she came to the people into the house of the LORD;

14 M iró y vio al rey, que estaba junto a la columna, conforme a la costumbre, a los príncipes y los trompeteros junto al rey, y a todo el pueblo del país que se regocijaba y tocaba las trompetas. Entonces Atalía, rasgando sus vestidos, clamó a voz en cuello: «¡Traición, traición!»

and when she looked, behold, the king stood by the pillar, as was his right, and the princes and the trumpeters by the king, and all the people of the land rejoiced and blew with trumpets. Then Athaliah rent her clothes and cried, Treason, Treason.

15 P ero el sacerdote Joiada ordenó a los jefes de centena que gobernaban el ejército: «Sacadla fuera del recinto del Templo, y al que la siga, matadlo a espada.» Como el sacerdote había dicho que no la mataran en el templo de Jehová,

Then Jehoiada, the priest, commanded the captains of the hundreds that governed the host and said unto them, Take her forth outside the order of the house and kill with the sword any that follow her. (For the priest had said, Let her not be slain in the house of the LORD.)

16 l e abrieron paso y la mataron en el camino por donde entran los de a caballo a la casa del rey.

And they laid hands on her, and she went by the way by which the horsemen enter into the king’s house, and there she was slain.

17 E ntonces Joiada hizo un pacto entre Jehová, el rey y el pueblo, que sería el pueblo de Jehová; asimismo entre el rey y el pueblo.

¶ Then Jehoiada made a covenant between the LORD and the king and the people, that they should be the LORD’s people; and likewise between the king and the people.

18 L uego todo el pueblo de la tierra entró en el templo de Baal y lo derribaron. También despedazaron completamente sus altares y sus imágenes, y mataron a Matán, sacerdote de Baal, delante de los altares. Después el sacerdote puso una guardia en la casa de Jehová,

And all the people of the land went into the house of Baal and broke it down; his altars and his images they broke in pieces thoroughly and slew Mattan, the priest of Baal, before the altars. And the priest appointed officers over the house of the LORD.

19 t omó a los jefes de centenas, los capitanes, la guardia y todo el pueblo del país, y llevaron al rey, por el camino de la puerta de la guardia, desde la casa de Jehová hasta la casa del rey. Y se sentó Joás en el trono de los reyes.

And he took the rulers over hundreds and the captains and the guard and all the people of the land, and they brought down the king from the house of the LORD and came by the way of the gate of the guard to the king’s house. And he sat on the throne of the kings.

20 T odo el pueblo de la tierra se regocijó. Y como Atalía había muerto a espada junto a la casa del rey, la ciudad permaneció tranquila.

And all the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was at rest after they slew Athaliah with the sword beside the king’s house.

21 S iete años tenía Joás cuando comenzó a reinar.

Jehoash was seven years old when he began to reign.
