1 C uando oyeron Sanbalat, Tobías, Gesem el árabe y los demás de nuestros enemigos que yo había edificado el muro, y que no quedaba en él brecha alguna (aunque hasta aquel tiempo no había puesto las hojas de las puertas),

¶ Now it came to pass when Sanballat and Tobiah and Geshem, the Arabian, and the rest of our enemies, heard that I had built the wall and that there was no breach left in it (though at that time I had not set up the doors upon the gates),

2 S anbalat y Gesem enviaron a decirme: «Ven y reunámonos en alguna de las aldeas en el campo de Ono.» Pero ellos habían pensado hacerme mal.

that Sanballat and Geshem sent unto me, saying, Come, let us meet together in one of the villages in the plain of Ono. But they had thought to do me evil.

3 E ntonces envié mensajeros para decirles: «Estoy ocupado en una gran obra y no puedo ir; porque cesaría la obra si yo la abandonara para ir a vosotros.»

And I sent messengers unto them, saying, I am doing a great work so that I cannot come down; why should the work cease, whilst I leave it and come down to you?

4 C uatro veces me enviaron mensajes sobre el mismo asunto, y yo les respondí de la misma manera.

Yet they sent unto me four times after this sort, and I answered them after the same manner.

5 E ntonces Sanbalat me envió a su criado para decir lo mismo por quinta vez, con una carta abierta en su mano,

Then Sanballat sent his slave to say the same thing for the fifth time with an open letter in his hand,

6 e n la cual estaba escrito: «Se ha oído entre las naciones, y Gasmu lo dice, que tú y los judíos pensáis rebelaros y que por eso edificas tú el muro, con la mira, según estas palabras, de ser tú su rey;

in which was written, It is reported among the Gentiles, and Gashmu saith it, that thou and the Jews think to rebel, for which cause thou dost build the wall, that thou may be their king, according to these words.

7 y que has puesto profetas que, refiriéndose a ti, proclamen en Jerusalén: “¡Hay rey en Judá!” Estas palabras van a llegar a los oídos del rey; ven, por tanto, y consultemos juntos.»

And thou hast also appointed prophets to preach of thee at Jerusalem, saying, There is a king in Judah! And now these words shall be heard by the king. Come now, therefore, and let us take counsel together.

8 E ntonces envié yo a decirle: «No hay nada de lo que dices, sino que son invenciones de tu corazón.»

Then I sent unto him, saying, There are no such things done as thou sayest, but thou dost feign them out of thine own heart.

9 P orque todos ellos nos amedrentaban, diciendo: «Se debilitarán las manos de ellos en la obra, y no será terminada.» «¡Ahora, pues, oh Dios, fortalece tú mis manos!»

For they all made us afraid, saying, Their hands shall be weakened from the work, that it not be done. Now, therefore, O God, strengthen my hands.

10 D espués fui a casa de Semaías hijo de Delaía hijo de Mehetabel, porque estaba encerrado. Él me dijo: —Reunámonos en la casa de Dios, dentro del Templo, y cerremos las puertas, porque vienen a matarte; sí, esta noche vendrán a matarte.

¶ Afterward I came in secret unto the house of Shemaiah, the son of Delaiah, the son of Mehetabeel, who was shut up; and he said, Let us meet together in the house of God, within the temple, and let us shut the doors of the temple; for they are coming to slay thee; yea, tonight they will come to slay thee.

11 P ero yo le respondí: —¿Un hombre como yo ha de huir? ¿Y quién, que fuera como yo, entraría al Templo para salvarse la vida? No entraré.

Then I said, Should such a man as I flee? And who is there as I who could go into the temple and live? I will not go in.

12 R econocí que Dios no lo había enviado, sino que decía aquella profecía contra mí porque Tobías y Sanbalat lo habían sobornado.

And I perceived that God had not sent him, but that he pronounced this prophecy against me, for Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him.

13 P ues fue sobornado para intimidarme, para que así yo pecara. Ellos aprovecharían esto para crearme mala fama y desprestigiarme.

For he was bribed to make me be thus afraid and sin and that they might have matter for an evil report, that they might reproach me.

14 « ¡Acuérdate, Dios mío, de Tobías y de Sanbalat, conforme a estas cosas que hicieron; también acuérdate de la profetisa Noadías y de los otros profetas que procuraban infundirme miedo!»

My God, think thou upon Tobiah and Sanballat according to these their works and on the prophetess Noadiah and the rest of the prophets, that did things to put me in fear.

15 F ue terminado, pues, el muro, el veinticinco del mes de Elul, en cincuenta y dos días.

¶ So the wall was finished the twenty-fifth of Elul, in fifty-two days.

16 C uando lo oyeron todos nuestros enemigos, temieron todas las naciones que estaban alrededor de nosotros; se sintieron humillados y reconocieron que por nuestro Dios había sido hecha esta obra.

And it came to pass, that when all our enemies heard of it, all the Gentiles that were about us feared, and they were much cast down in their own eyes, and they knew that this work was wrought of our God.

17 E n aquellos días los principales de Judá enviaban muchas cartas a Tobías y recibían las de éste.

Likewise, in those days the principals of Judah sent many letters unto Tobiah, and the letters of Tobiah came unto them.

18 P orque muchos en Judá se habían aliado con él, pues era yerno de Secanías hijo de Ara; y Johanán su hijo había tomado por mujer a la hija de Mesulam hijo de Berequías.

For there were many in Judah sworn unto him, because he was the son-in-law of Shechaniah, the son of Arah; and his son Johanan had taken the daughter of Meshullam, the son of Berechiah.

19 T ambién contaban delante de mí las buenas obras de Tobías, y a él le referían mis palabras. Y Tobías enviaba cartas para atemorizarme.

They also reported his good deeds before me and uttered my words to him. And Tobiah sent letters to put me in fear.
