1 S iete años tenía Joás cuando comenzó a reinar, y cuarenta años reinó en Jerusalén. El nombre de su madre fue Sibia, de Beerseba.

¶ Joash was seven years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Zibiah of Beersheba.

2 E hizo Joás lo recto ante los ojos de Jehová todos los días de Joiada, el sacerdote.

And Joash did that which was right in the sight of the LORD all the days of Jehoiada, the priest.

3 J oiada lo hizo casar con dos mujeres, y engendró hijos e hijas.

And Jehoiada took for him two wives, and he begat sons and daughters.

4 D espués de esto, aconteció que Joás decidió restaurar la casa de Jehová.

And it came to pass after this that Joash desired to repair the house of the LORD.

5 R eunió a los sacerdotes y a los levitas, y les dijo: «Salid por las ciudades de Judá y recoged dinero de todo Israel, para que cada año sea reparada la casa de vuestro Dios; y vosotros poned diligencia en el asunto.» Pero los levitas no pusieron diligencia.

And he gathered together the priests and the Levites and said to them, Go out unto the cities of Judah and gather of all Israel money to repair the house of your God from year to year, and be diligent in this matter. However the Levites were not diligent.

6 P or lo cual el rey llamó al sumo sacerdote Joiada y le dijo: «¿Por qué no has procurado que los levitas traigan de Judá y de Jerusalén la ofrenda que Moisés, siervo de Jehová, impuso a la congregación de Israel para el tabernáculo del Testimonio?»

Therefore the king called for Jehoiada, the chief, and said unto him, Why hast thou not required of the Levites to bring in out of Judah and out of Jerusalem unto the tabernacle of the testimony the collection, according to the commandment of Moses, the slave of the LORD and of the congregation of Israel?

7 P ues la impía Atalía y sus hijos habían destruido la casa de Dios, y además habían gastado en los ídolos todas las cosas consagradas de la casa de Jehová.

For the wicked woman, Athaliah, and her sons had broken up the house of God, and they had also bestowed all the dedicated things of the house of the LORD upon Baalim.

8 M andó, pues, el rey que hicieran un arca, la cual pusieron fuera, a la puerta de la casa de Jehová;

And at the king’s commandment they made an ark and set it outside at the gate of the house of the LORD.

9 e hicieron pregonar en Judá y en Jerusalén que trajeran a Jehová la ofrenda que Moisés, siervo de Dios, había impuesto a Israel en el desierto.

And they made a proclamation through Judah and Jerusalem to bring in to the LORD the collection that Moses the slave of God laid upon Israel in the wilderness.

10 T odos los jefes y todo el pueblo se gozaron, trajeron ofrendas y las echaron en el arca hasta llenarla.

And all the princes and all the people rejoiced and brought in and cast into the ark until they had fulfilled their duty.

11 Y cuando llegaba el momento de llevar el arca al secretario del rey por medio de los levitas, si veían que había mucho dinero, venía el escriba del rey y el que estaba puesto por el Sumo sacerdote, llevaban el arca, la vaciaban y la retornaban a su lugar. Así lo hacían de día en día, y recogían mucho dinero.

Now it came to pass, that at what time the ark was brought unto the king’s office by the hand of the Levites and when they saw that there was much money, the king’s scribe and the high priest’s officer came and emptied the ark and took it and returned it to its place. Thus they did day by day and gathered money in abundance.

12 L uego el rey y Joiada lo daban a los que hacían el trabajo del servicio de la casa de Jehová. Estos contrataban canteros y carpinteros para que repararan la casa de Jehová, y artífices en hierro y bronce para componer la Casa.

And the king and Jehoiada gave it to those that did the work of the service of the house of the LORD and hired masons and carpenters to repair the house of the LORD and also those that wrought iron and brass to mend the house of the LORD.

13 H acían, pues, los artesanos la obra, y con sus manos la obra quedó restaurada; restituyeron la casa de Dios a su antigua condición, y la consolidaron.

So the workmen wrought, and by their hands the work was done, and they restored the house of God and strengthened it.

14 C uando la terminaron, trajeron al rey y a Joiada lo que quedaba del dinero e hicieron de él utensilios para la casa de Jehová, utensilios para el servicio, morteros, cucharas, vasos de oro y de plata. Y sacrificaron holocaustos continuamente en la casa de Jehová durante todos los días de Joiada.

And when they had finished it, they brought the rest of the money before the king and Jehoiada, of which they made vessels for the house of the LORD, vessels to minister and to offer with, and spoons and vessels of gold and silver. And they offered burnt offerings in the house of the LORD continually all the days of Jehoiada.

15 P ero Joiada envejeció y murió lleno de días; tenía ciento treinta años cuando murió.

¶ But Jehoiada waxed old and was full of days when he died; he was one hundred and thirty years old when he died.

16 L o sepultaron en la Ciudad de David con los reyes, por cuanto había hecho el bien en Israel, con Dios y con su casa.

And they buried him in the city of David among the kings because he had done good in Israel, both toward God and toward his house.

17 M uerto Joiada, vinieron los príncipes de Judá y le ofrecieron obediencia al rey. El rey los oyó,

Now after the death of Jehoiada, the princes of Judah came and worshipped the king. Then the king hearkened unto them.

18 y ellos abandonaron la casa de Jehová, el Dios de sus padres, y sirvieron a los símbolos de Asera y a las imágenes esculpidas. Entonces la ira de Dios vino sobre Judá y Jerusalén por este su pecado.

And they left the house of the LORD God of their fathers and served groves and idols, and wrath came upon Judah and Jerusalem for their guilt.

19 Y les envió profetas para que los hicieran volver a Jehová, los cuales los amonestaron; pero ellos no los escucharon.

Yet he sent prophets to them to bring them again unto the LORD, and they testified against them, but they would not give ear.

20 E ntonces el espíritu de Dios vino sobre Zacarías, hijo del sacerdote Joiada, se puso en pie, en un lugar alto, y dijo al pueblo: «Así ha dicho Dios: ¿Por qué quebrantáis los mandamientos de Jehová? No os vendrá bien por ello, porque por haber dejado a Jehová, él también os abandonará.»

And the Spirit of God clothed himself in Zechariah, the son of Jehoiada, the priest, who being over the people, said unto them, Thus hath God said, Why do ye transgress the commandments of the LORD? Ye shall not prosper in this; for because ye have forsaken the LORD, he shall also forsake you.

21 P ero ellos conspiraron contra él, y por mandato del rey lo apedrearon hasta matarlo, en el patio de la casa de Jehová.

And they conspired against him and stoned him with stones at the commandment of the king in the court of the house of the LORD.

22 A sí el rey Joás no se acordó de la misericordia que Joiada, padre de Zacarías, había tenido con él, sino que mató a su hijo, quien dijo al morir: «¡Jehová lo vea y lo demande!»

Thus Joash, the king, did not remember the mercy which Jehoiada, his father, had done to him but slew his son; who said when he died, The LORD look upon it and require it.

23 A la vuelta del año subió contra él el ejército de Siria, que invadieron a Judá y a Jerusalén, mataron de entre el pueblo a todos los principales, y enviaron todo el botín al rey de Damasco,

And at the end of the year, the host of Syria came up against him, and they came to Judah and Jerusalem and destroyed all the princes of the people from among the people and sent all the spoil of them unto the king of Damascus.

24 p ues aunque el ejército de Siria había venido con poca gente, Jehová entregó en sus manos un ejército muy numeroso, por cuanto habían abandonado a Jehová, el Dios de sus padres. Así sufrió Joás el castigo merecido.

For even though the army of the Syrians had come with a small company of men, the LORD delivered a very great host into their hand because they had forsaken the LORD God of their fathers. So they executed judgments against Joash.

25 C uando se fueron los sirios, dejándolo agobiado por sus dolencias, conspiraron contra él sus siervos, a causa de la sangre de los hijos de Joiada, el sacerdote, y lo hirieron en su cama, donde murió. Lo sepultaron en la Ciudad de David, pero no en los sepulcros de los reyes.

And when they were departed from him (for they left him in great diseases), his own slaves conspired against him for the blood of the sons of Jehoiada, the priest, and slew him on his bed, and he died; and they buried him in the city of David, but they did not bury him in the sepulchres of the kings.

26 L os que conspiraron contra él fueron Zabad hijo de Simeat, el amonita, y Jozabad hijo de Simrit, el moabita.

Those that conspired against him were Zabad, the son of Shimeath, an Ammonitess, and Jehozabad, the son of Shimrith, a Moabitess.

27 E n lo tocante a los hijos de Joás, la multiplicación que hizo de las rentas y la restauración de la casa de Jehová, está escrito en la historia del libro de los reyes. Y reinó en su lugar su hijo Amasías.

Now concerning his sons, and of the multiplication that he did of the taxes and the repairing of the house of God, behold, they are written in the story of the book of the kings. And Amaziah, his son, reigned in his stead.
