1 « Baja y siéntate en el polvo, virgen, hija de Babilonia. Siéntate en la tierra, sin trono, hija de los caldeos, porque nunca más te llamarán tierna y delicada.

¶ Come down, and sit in the dust, O virgin daughter of Babylon; sit on the ground, without a throne, O daughter of the Chaldeans; for thou shalt no longer be called tender and delicate.

2 T oma el molino y muele harina; quítate el velo, levanta tus faldas, desnuda tus piernas, pasa los ríos.

Take the millstones and grind meal; uncover thy locks, remove the shoes from thy feet, uncover the thigh, pass over the rivers.

3 S erá expuesta tu desnudez, serán vistas tus vergüenzas. Haré retribución y no habrá quien se libre»,

Thy nakedness shall be uncovered and thy shame shall be seen; I will take vengeance, and I will not help any man.

4 d ice nuestro Redentor: Jehová de los ejércitos es su nombre, el Santo de Israel.

As for our redeemer, the LORD of the hosts is his name, the Holy One of Israel.

5 « Siéntate, calla y entra en las tinieblas, hija de los caldeos, porque nunca más te llamarán “soberana de reinos”.»

Sit, be silent, and go into darkness, O daughter of the Chaldeans; for thou shalt no longer be called, The lady of kingdoms.

6 « Me enojé contra mi pueblo, profané mi heredad y los entregué en tus manos; no les tuviste compasión; sobre el anciano agravaste sobremanera tu yugo.

I was wroth with my people; I have profaned my inheritance and given them into thine hand; thou didst show them no mercy; upon the ancient thou hast very heavily laid thy yoke.

7 D ijiste: “Para siempre seré señora”, pero no has pensado en esto ni te has acordado de tu final.

¶ And thou didst say, I shall be a lady for ever. Until now thou hast not laid these things to heart, neither didst thou remember thy latter end.

8 O ye, pues, ahora esto, mujer voluptuosa, tú que estás sentada confiadamente, tú que dices en tu corazón: “Yo soy y fuera de mí no hay otra; no quedaré viuda ni conoceré orfandad.”

Therefore now hear this, thou delicate one, that dost sit in confidence and say in thine heart, I am, and no one else beside me; I shall not sit as a widow, neither shall I be fatherless.

9 E stas dos cosas te vendrán de repente, en un mismo día: orfandad y viudez. Con toda su fuerza vendrán sobre ti, a pesar de la multitud de tus hechizos y de tus muchos encantamientos.

But these two things shall come to thee in a moment in one day; the loss of thy fathers and widowhood: they shall come upon thee in their perfection for the multitude of thy sorceries and for the great abundance of thine enchantments.

10 P orque te confiaste en tu maldad, diciendo: “Nadie me ve.” Tu sabiduría y tu misma ciencia te engañaron, y dijiste en tu corazón: “Yo, y nadie más.”

For thou hast trusted in thy wickedness: thou hast said, No one sees me. Thy wisdom and thine own knowledge; it has deceived thee; for thou hast said in thine heart, I am, and no one else beside me.

11 V endrá, pues, sobre ti un mal cuyo origen no conocerás; caerá sobre ti un quebrantamiento que no podrás evitar. Una destrucción que no podías suponer vendrá de repente sobre ti.

Therefore shall evil come upon thee; thou shalt not know from where it rises; and mischief shall fall upon thee; thou shalt not be able to put it off: and destruction shall come upon thee suddenly, which thou shalt not know.

12 » Persiste ahora en tus encantamientos y en la multitud de tus hechizos, en los cuales te fatigaste desde tu juventud. ¡Quizá podrás mejorarte! ¡Quizá te fortalecerás!

Stand now with thine enchantments and with the multitude of thy sorceries in which thou hast laboured from thy youth; if so be thou shalt be able to better thyself, if so be thou may prevail.

13 T e has fatigado en tus muchos consejos. Comparezcan ahora y te defiendan los contempladores de los cielos, los que observan las estrellas, los que cuentan los meses, para pronosticar lo que vendrá sobre ti.

Thou art wearied in the multitude of thy counsels. Let now those that contemplate the heavens, those that speculate regarding the stars, those that teach the courses of the moon, stand up and defend thee from these things that shall come upon thee.

14 H e aquí que serán como el tamo; el fuego los quemará, no salvarán sus vidas del poder de la llama; no quedará brasa para calentarse ni lumbre a la que arrimarse.

Behold, they shall be as stubble; the fire shall burn them; they shall not deliver their lives from the hand of the flame; there shall not be a coal left to warm at, nor light to sit before it.

15 A sí te serán aquellos con quienes te fatigaste, los que traficaron contigo desde tu juventud; cada uno irá por su camino, no habrá quien te salve.»

Thus shall they be unto thee with whom thou hast laboured, even thy merchants, from thy youth: they shall wander each one to his own way; there shall be no one to save thee.
