1 E cco ciò che mi fece vedere il Signore, l'Eterno: egli formava cavallette, quando iniziava a crescere la seconda erba; ed ecco, la seconda erba veniva dopo la falciatura del re.

¶ Thus hath the Lord GOD showed unto me, and, behold, he formed grasshoppers in the beginning of the shooting up of the latter hay; and, behold that the latter hay grew after the king’s reapings.

2 Q uando esse ebbero finito di divorare l'erba della terra io dissi: «Signore, Eterno deh perdona. Come potrebbe durare Giacobbe, dato che è piccolo?».

And it came to pass that when they had come to an end of eating the grass of the land, then I said, O Lord GOD, forgive, I beseech thee; who shall lift up Jacob? for he is small.

3 L 'Eterno si pentí di questo: «Ciò non avverrà», disse l'Eterno.

The LORD repented of this; It shall not be, said the LORD.

4 E cco ciò che mi fece vedere il Signore, l'Eterno: il Signore, l'Eterno, proclamava di voler difendere la sua causa col fuoco; e il fuoco divorò il grande abisso e divorò una parte del paese.

Afterward the Lord GOD showed me this: And, behold, the Lord GOD called to judge by fire, and it devoured the great deep and ate up the inheritance.

5 A llora io dissi: «Signore, Eterno, deh, cessa. Come potrebbe durare Giacobbe, dato che è piccolo?».

Then said I, O Lord GOD, cease, I beseech thee; who shall raise up Jacob? for he is small.

6 L 'Eterno si pentí di questo: «Neppure questo avverrà», disse il Signore, l'Eterno.

The LORD repented of this: This also shall not be, said the Lord GOD.

7 E cco ciò che egli mi fece vedere: il Signore stava ritto sopra un muro a piombo e con un filo a piombo in mano.

Thus he showed me: and, behold, the Lord stood upon a wall made by a plumbline, with a plumbline in his hand.

8 L 'Eterno mi disse: «Amos, che cosa vedi?». Io risposi: «Un filo a piombo». Allora il Signore disse: «Ecco, io pongo un filo a piombo in mezzo al mio popolo Israele; non lo risparmierò piú a lungo.

And the LORD said unto me, Amos, what seest thou? And I said, A plumbline. Then said the Lord, Behold, I set a plumbline in the midst of my people Israel: I will not again pass over them any more:

9 G li alti luoghi d'Isacco saranno devastati e i santuari d'Israele saranno distrutti; io mi leverò con la spada contro la casa di Geroboamo».

And the altars of Isaac shall be destroyed, and the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste; and I will rise upon the house of Jeroboam with the sword.

10 A llora Amatsiah, sacerdote di Bethel mandò a dire a Geroboamo re d'Israele: «Amos congiura contro di te in mezzo alla casa d'Israele; il paese non è in grado di sopportare tutte le sue parole.

¶ Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, Amos has conspired against thee in the midst of the house of Israel; the land is not able to bear all his words.

11 A mos infatti ha detto cosí: Geroboamo morirà di spada e Israele sarà certamente deportato lontano dal suo paese.

For thus hath Amos said, Jeroboam shall die by the sword, and Israel shall surely be led away captive out of their own land.

12 A matsiah disse ad Amos: «Veggente, va scappatene nel paese di Giuda; là mangerai pane e là profetizzerai;

And Amaziah said unto Amos, O thou seer, go, flee thee away into the land of Judah, and eat thy bread there, and prophesy there:

13 m a non profetizzare piú a Bethel, perché è il santuario del re e la residenza reale».

but do not prophesy any more in Bethel: for it is the king’s sanctuary, and the head of the kingdom.

14 A llora Amos rispose e disse ad Amatsiah: «Io non ero profeta né figlio di profeti, ma ero un mandriano e coltivavo i sicomori.

Then Amos answered and said to Amaziah, I am not a prophet, neither am I a prophet’s son, but I am a herdsman and a gatherer of sycamore fruit:

15 L 'Eterno mi prese da dietro al gregge, e l'Eterno mi disse: "Va' profetizza al mio popolo d'Israele

and the LORD took me as I followed the flock, and the LORD said unto me, Go, prophesy unto my people Israel.

16 O ra perciò ascolta la parola dell'Eterno: Tu dici: "Non profetizzare contro Israele e smettila di parlare contro la casa di Isacco"

Now therefore hear thou the word of the LORD: Thou sayest, Do not prophesy against Israel and do not drop thy word against the house of Isaac.

17 P erciò cosí parla l'Eterno: "Tua moglie si prostituirà nella città, i tuoi figli e le tue figlie cadranno di spada e il tuo paese sarà spartito con la corda; tu morirai su terra impura e Israele sarà certamente deportato lontano dal suo paese"».

Therefore thus hath the LORD said; Thy wife shall be a harlot in the city, and thy sons and thy daughters shall fall by the sword, and thy land shall be divided by lots; and thou shalt die in a polluted land; and Israel shall surely go into captivity from his land.
