1 O r Davide disse in cuor suo: «Un giorno o l'altro io perirò per mano di Saul; non vi è nulla di meglio per me che mettermi in salvo nel paese dei Filistei; così Saul desisterà dal ricercarmi ancora in tutto il territorio d'Israele così scamperò dalle sue mani».

¶ And David said in his heart, In the end I shall be killed some day by the hand of Saul; there is nothing better for me than that I should escape once and for all into the land of the Philistines; and Saul shall despair of me, to seek me any more within the borders of Israel; so shall I escape out of his hand.

2 P erciò Davide si levò e si recò con i seicento uomini che aveva con sé, da Akish figlio di Maok, re di Gath.

And David arose, and he went over with the six hundred men that were with him unto Achish, the son of Maoch, king of Gath.

3 C osì Davide rimase con Akish a Gath, lui e i suoi uomini, ciascuno con la sua famiglia; Davide con le sue due mogli: Ahinoam la Jezreelita, e Abigail la Karmelita, già moglie di Nabal.

And David dwelt with Achish at Gath, he and his men, each one with his household, David with his two wives, Ahinoam, the Jezreelitess, and Abigail, who had been the wife of Nabal of Carmel.

4 F u quindi riferito a Saul che Davide era fuggito a Gath, ed egli non lo cercò più.

And it was told Saul that David had fled to Gath, and he sought him no more.

5 D avide disse ad Akish: «Se ho trovato grazia ai tuoi occhi, mi sia dato un luogo in una città della campagna dove io possa abitare. Perché dovrebbe il tuo servo abitare con te nella città reale?».

And David said unto Achish, If I have now found grace in thine eyes, let me be given a place in one of the cities of the land that I may dwell there, for why should thy slave dwell in the royal city with thee?

6 C osì quel giorno Akish gli diede Tsiklag; per questo Tsiklag è appartenuta ai re di Giuda fino al giorno d'oggi.

Then Achish gave him Ziklag that day. Therefore, Ziklag pertains to the kings of Judah unto this day.

7 I l tempo che Davide rimase nel paese dei Filistei fu di un anno e quattro mesi.

And the number of days that David dwelt in the country of the Philistines was four months and some days.

8 D avide e i suoi uomini salivano e facevano razzie nel paese dei Gheshuriti dei Ghirziti e degli Amalekiti; queste popolazioni abitavano da tempi antichi il paese, estendendosi da Shur fino al paese d'Egitto.

¶ And David and his men went up and invaded the Geshurites and the Gezrites and the Amalekites, for these had inhabited the land for a long time, from as thou goest unto Shur even unto the land of Egypt.

9 D avide devastava il paese e non lasciava in vita né uomo né donna, prendeva quindi pecore, buoi, asini, cammelli e indumenti, e ritornava e andava da Akish.

And David smote the land and left neither man nor woman alive and took away the sheep and the oxen and the asses and the camels and the apparel and returned and came to Achish.

10 Q uando Akish chiedeva: «Dove avete fatto razzie quest'oggi?» Davide rispondeva: «Contro il sud di Giuda contro il sud del Kenei».

And Achish would say, Where have ye raided today? And David would say, Against the south of Judah and towards the Negev of the Jerahmeelites or towards the Negev of the Kenites.

11 D avide non lasciava in vita né uomo né donna, perché potevano portare notizie e diceva: «Potrebbero dare notizie a nostro riguardo e dire: "Così ha fatto Davide"». Questo fu il suo modo di agire tutto il tempo che rimase nel paese dei Filistei

And David left neither man nor woman alive, to bring tidings to Gath, saying, Lest they should tell on us, saying, So did David. And this was his manner all the time he dwelt in the land of the Philistines.

12 C osì Akish si fidava di Davide e diceva: «Egli si è reso odioso al suo popolo Israele e così sarà per sempre mio servo».

And Achish believed David, saying, He is making himself abominable unto his people of Israel; therefore, he shall be my slave for ever.
