1 O r avvenne che quando ebbe consolidato il regno e si fu rafforzato, Roboamo abbandonò la legge dell'Eterno e tutto Israele con lui.

¶ And it came to pass, when Rehoboam had confirmed the kingdom and had strengthened himself, he forsook the law of the LORD, and all Israel with him.

2 N ell'anno quinto del re Roboamo, Scishak, re d'Egitto, salí contro Gerusalemme (perché essi avevano peccato contro l'Eterno),

And it came to pass that in the fifth year of King Rehoboam, Shishak, king of Egypt, came up against Jerusalem, because they had rebelled against the LORD,

3 c on milleduecento carri e sessantamila cavalieri; e con lui dall'Egitto venne un popolo innumerevole: Libici, Sukkei ed Etiopi.

with twelve hundred chariots and sixty thousand horsemen; and the people were without number that came with him out of Egypt: the Lubims, the Sukkiims, and the Ethiopians.

4 E gli espugnò le città fortificate che appartenevano a Giuda e giunse fino a Gerusalemme.

And he took the fenced cities which pertained to Judah and came to Jerusalem.

5 A llora il profeta Scemaiah si recò da Roboamo e dai capi di Giuda, che si erano radunati a Gerusalemme per paura di Scishak, e disse loro: «Cosí dice l'Eterno: "Voi avete abbandonato me, perciò anch'io ho abbandonato voi nelle mani di Scishak"».

Then Shemaiah, the prophet, went to Rehoboam and to the princes of Judah, that were gathered together to Jerusalem because of Shishak, and said unto them, Thus hath the LORD said, Ye have forsaken me, and therefore, I have also left you in the hand of Shishak.

6 A llora i principi d'Israele e il re si umiliarono e dissero: «L'Eterno è giusto».

And the princes of Israel and the king humbled themselves; and they said, The LORD is righteous.

7 Q uando l'Eterno vide che si erano umiliati, la parola dell'Eterno fu rivolta a Scemaiah, dicendo: «Poiché essi si sono umiliati, io non li distruggerò, ma concederò loro fra poco liberazione e la mia ira non si riverserà su Gerusalemme per mezzo di Scishak.

And when the LORD saw that they humbled themselves, the word of the LORD came to Shemaiah, saying, They have humbled themselves; therefore, I will not destroy them, but I will deliver them shortly; and my wrath shall not be poured out upon Jerusalem by the hand of Shishak.

8 T uttavia saranno asserviti a lui, cosí conosceranno per esperienza cosa significa servire a me e servire ai regni delle nazioni».

Nevertheless, they shall be his slaves that they may know what it is to serve me and to serve the kingdoms of the nations.

9 C osí Scishak, re d'Egitto, salí contro Gerusalemme e portò via i tesori della casa dell'Eterno e i tesori del palazzo reale; portò via ogni cosa; prese anche gli scudi d'oro che Salomone aveva fatto.

So Shishak, king of Egypt, came up against Jerusalem and took away the treasures of the house of the LORD and the treasures of the king’s house; he took it all; he also carried away the shields of gold which Solomon had made.

10 A l loro posto il re Roboamo fece fare scudi di bronzo e ne affidò la custodia ai capitani delle guardie che sorvegliavano la porta della casa del re.

And in their place King Rehoboam made shields of brass and committed them to the hands of the princes of the guard that kept the entrance of the king’s house.

11 O gni volta che il re entrava nella casa dell'Eterno, le guardie andavano a prenderli e poi li riportavano nella sala delle guardie.

And when the king entered into the house of the LORD, the guard came and brought them, and afterward they returned them again into the guard chamber.

12 P oiché Roboamo si era umiliato, l'ira dell'Eterno si ritirò da lui e non lo distrusse completamente; in Giuda c'erano anche delle cose buone.

And when he humbled himself, the wrath of the LORD turned from him that he would not destroy him altogether; and also in Judah things went well.

13 C osí il re Roboamo si rafforzò in Gerusalemme e continuò a regnare. Quando iniziò a regnare, Roboamo aveva quarantun'anni, e regnò diciassette anni a Gerusalemme, la città che l'Eterno aveva scelto fra tutte le tribú d'Israele per stabilirvi il suo nome. Sua madre si chiamava Naamah, l'Ammonita.

¶ So King Rehoboam was strengthened and reigned in Jerusalem; and Rehoboam was forty-one years old when he began to reign, and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city which the LORD had chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, to put his name there. And his mother’s name was Naamah, an Ammonitess.

14 E gli fece il male, perché non applicò il suo cuore a ricercare l'Eterno.

And he did evil because he did not prepare his heart to seek the LORD.

15 L e gesta di Roboamo, dalle prime alle ultime, non sono forse scritte negli annali del profeta Scemaiah e del veggente Iddo, secondo le genealogie? Vi furono guerre in continuazione fra Roboamo e Geroboamo.

Now the acts of Rehoboam, first and last, are they not written in the book of Shemaiah, the prophet, and of Iddo, the seer concerning genealogies? And there was war between Rehoboam and Jeroboam continually.

16 P oi Roboamo si addormentò con i suoi padri e fu sepolto nella città di Davide. Al suo posto regnò suo figlio Abijah.

And Rehoboam slept with his fathers and was buried in the city of David, and Abijah, his son, reigned in his stead.
