1 G iobbe riprese il suo discorso e disse:

¶ Moreover, Job continued his parable and said,

2 « Oh, potessi essere come nei mesi di un tempo, come nei giorni in cui Dio mi proteggeva,

Oh, that I were as in months past, as in the days when God preserved me;

3 q uando la sua lampada brillava sopra il mio capo e alla sua luce camminavo in mezzo alle tenebre;

when his lamp shone upon my head, and by its light I walked in the darkness;

4 c om'ero ai giorni della mia maturità, quando il consiglio segreto di Dio vegliava sulla mia tenda,

as I was in the days of my youth, when God was familiar in my tent;

5 q uando l'Onnipotente era ancora con me e i miei figli mi stavano intorno;

when the Almighty was yet with me, when my children were about me;

6 q uando mi lavavo i piedi nel burro e la roccia versava per me ruscelli d'olio.

when I washed my steps with butter, and the rock poured me out rivers of oil!

7 Q uando uscivo verso la porta della città e rizzavo il mio seggio in piazza,

¶ When I went out to the gate to judgment, when I had my seat prepared in the plaza!

8 i giovani, al vedermi, si tiravano in disparte, i vecchi si alzavano e rimanevano in piedi;

The young men would see me and hide themselves, and the aged would arise and stand.

9 i principi smettevano di parlare e si mettevano la mano alla bocca;

The princes would refrain from talking and lay their hand on their mouth;

10 l a voce dei capi si smorzava e la loro lingua si attaccava al palato.

the voice of the principals would not be noticed, and their tongue would cleave to the roof of their mouth.

11 L 'orecchio che mi udiva, mi proclamava beato, e l'occhio che mi vedeva, mi rendeva testimonianza,

When the ears that heard me, called me blessed; and when the eyes that saw me, gave witness to me:

12 p erché liberavo il povero che gridava in cerca di aiuto, e l'orfano che non aveva alcuno che l'aiutasse.

because I delivered the poor that cried and the fatherless who had no one to help him.

13 L a benedizione del morente scendeva su di me e facevo esultare il cuore della vedova.

The blessing of the one that was ready to perish came upon me; and I caused the widow’s heart to sing for joy.

14 A vevo indossato la giustizia ed essa mi rivestiva; la mia equità mi faceva da mantello e turbante.

I put on righteousness, and it clothed me as a robe; and my diadem was judgment.

15 E ro occhi per il cieco e piedi per lo zoppo;

I was eyes to the blind and feet to the lame.

16 e ro un padre per i poveri e investigavo il caso che non conoscevo.

I was a father to the needy; and the cause which I did not know I searched out.

17 S pezzavo le mascelle del malvagio e strappavo dai suoi denti la preda.

And I broke the fangs of the wicked and caused their teeth to release the prey.

18 E pensavo: "Morirò nel mio nido e moltiplicherò i miei giorni come la sabbia;

¶ Then I said, I shall die in my nest, and I shall multiply my days as the sand.

19 l e mie radici si stenderanno verso le acque, la rugiada rimarrà tutta la notte sul mio ramo;

My root is spread out by the waters, and the dew shall remain upon my branches.

20 l a mia gloria sarà sempre nuova in me e il mio arco acquisterà nuova forza nella mia mano.

My glory is renewed with me, and my bow is renewed in my hand.

21 G li astanti mi ascoltavano in aspettazione e tacevano per udire il mio consiglio.

They would hear me and wait, and keep silent at my counsel.

22 D opo che avevo parlato non replicavano, e le mie parole cadevano su di loro come gocce di rugiada.

After my words they would not reply, but my reason dropped upon them.

23 M i aspettavano come si aspetta la pioggia e spalancavano la loro bocca come per l'ultima pioggia.

And they waited for me as for the rain, and they opened their mouth wide as for the latter rain.

24 I o sorridevo loro quando erano sfiduciati, e non potevano sminuire la luce del mio volto.

If I laughed at them, they did not believe it; and they did not cast down the light of my countenance.

25 Q uando andavo da loro, mi sedevo come capo e stavo come un re tra le sue schiere, come uno che consola gli afflitti».

I approved their way and sat at the head and dwelt as a king in the army, as one that comforts the mourners.
