1 Q uando il re Ezechia udí questo, si stracciò le vesti, si coprí di sacco ed entrò nella casa dell'Eterno.

¶ And it came to pass when king Hezekiah heard it, that he rent his clothes and covered himself with sackcloth and went into the house of the LORD.

2 Q uindi mandò Eliakim, prefetto del palazzo, Scebna, il segretario, e i piú anziani dei sacerdoti coperti di sacco, dal profeta Isaia, figlio di Amots,

And he sent Eliakim, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe and the elders of the priests covered with sackcloth unto Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz.

3 i quali gli dissero: «Cosí dice Ezechia: Questo giorno è un giorno di angoscia, di castigo e di vergogna, perché i figli stanno per nascere, ma non c'è forza per partorirli.

And they said unto him, Thus saith Hezekiah, This day is a day of trouble and of rebuke and of blasphemy, for the sons are come to the breaking of the water, and there is no strength in her who is to bring them forth.

4 F orse l'Eterno, il tuo DIO, ha udito le parole di Rabshakeh, che il re di Assiria suo signore, ha mandato a insultare il DIO vivente, e lo castigherà a motivo delle parole che l'Eterno, il tuo DIO, ha udito. Innalza dunque una preghiera per il residuo che ancora rimane».

It may be the LORD thy God will hear the words of Rabshakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master has sent to blaspheme the living God and to reprove with the words which the LORD thy God has heard; therefore lift up thy prayer for the remnant that is still left.

5 C osí i servi del re Ezechia si recarono da Isaia.

So the slaves of king Hezekiah came to Isaiah.

6 E Isaia disse loro: «Questo direte al vostro signore: Cosí dice l'Eterno: Non aver paura a motivo delle parole che hai udito, con le quali i servi del re di Assiria mi hanno insultato.

And Isaiah said unto them, Thus shall ye say unto your master, Thus saith the LORD, Do not be afraid of the words that thou hast heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me.

7 E cco, io manderò su di lui uno spirito e, appena avrà udito una certa notizia ritornerà nel suo paese; e nel suo paese lo farò cadere di spada».

Behold, that I am sending a spirit in him, and he shall hear a rumour and return to his own land; and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land.

8 C osí Rabshakeh ritornò e trovò il re di Assiria che assediava Libnah, perché aveva saputo che il re era partito da Lakish.

¶ So Rabshakeh returned, and found the king of Assyria warring against Libnah, for he had heard that he was departed from Lachish.

9 A llora il re di Assiria sentí dire riguardo Tirhakah, re di Etiopia: «E' uscito per muoverti guerra». Appena udí questo, egli mandò dei messaggeri ad Ezechia, dicendo:

And he heard say concerning Tirhakah king of Ethiopia, He is come forth to make war with thee. And when he heard it, he sent messengers to Hezekiah, saying,

10 « Direte cosí a Ezechia, re di Giuda: Non lasciare che il tuo DIO, nel quale confidi, t'inganni dicendo: Gerusalemme, non sarà data nelle mani del re di Assiria

Thus shall ye speak to Hezekiah king of Judah, saying, Do not let thy God, in whom thou dost trust, deceive thee, saying, Jerusalem shall not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.

11 E cco, tu hai udito ciò che i re di Assiria hanno fatto a tutti gli altri paesi, votandoli alla distruzione. Scamperesti tu soltanto?

Behold, thou hast heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands by destroying them utterly, and shalt thou be delivered?

12 H anno forse i re delle nazioni liberato quelli che i miei padri hanno distrutto: Gozan, Haran, Retsef e i figli di Eden che erano a Telassar?

Have the gods of the Gentiles delivered those whom my fathers have destroyed, as Gozan and Haran and Rezeph and the sons of Eden which were in Telassar?

13 D ove sono il re di Hamath, il re di Arpad e il re della città di Sefarvaim, di Hena e di Ivah?».

Where is the king of Hamath and the king of Arphad and the king of the city of Sepharvaim Hena, and Ivah?

14 E zechia prese la lettera dalle mani dei messaggeri e la lesse; poi salí alla casa dell'Eterno e la distese davanti all'Eterno.

And Hezekiah took the letters from the hand of the messengers and read them; and Hezekiah went up unto the house of the LORD and spread them before the LORD.

15 Q uindi Ezechia pregò l'Eterno, dicendo:

And Hezekiah prayed unto the LORD, saying,

16 « O Eterno degli eserciti, DIO d'Israele, che siedi tra i cherubini, tu sei DIO, tu solo, di tutti i regni della terra, tu hai fatto i cieli e la terra.

O LORD of the hosts, God of Israel, that dwellest between the cherubim, thou art the God, even thou alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth; thou hast made the heavens and earth.

17 P orgi il tuo orecchio, o Eterno, e ascolta, apri i tuoi occhi, o Eterno, e vedi. Ascolta tutte le parole di Sennacherib che ha mandato a dire per insultare il DIO vivente.

Incline thine ear, O LORD, and hear; open thine eyes, O LORD, and see and hear all the words of Sennacherib, who has sent his messengers to blaspheme the living God.

18 I n verità, o Eterno, i re di Assiria hanno devastato tutte le nazioni e i loro paesi

Of a truth, LORD, the kings of Assyria have laid waste all the nations and their countries

19 e hanno gettato nel fuoco i loro dèi, perché quelli non erano dèi, ma opera delle mani dell'uomo, legno e pietra; per questo li hanno distrutti.

and have cast their gods into the fire, for they were no gods, but the work of men’s hands, wood and stone; therefore they have destroyed them.

20 M a ora, o Eterno, DIO nostro, liberaci dalle sue mani, affinché tutti i regni della terra conoscano che tu solo sei l'Eterno».

Now therefore, O LORD our God, save us from his hand that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that thou art the LORD, even thou only.

21 A llora Isaia, figlio di Amots, mandò a dire ad Ezechia: «Cosí dice l'Eterno, il DIO d'Israele: Poiché tu mi hai pregato riguardo a Sennacherib, re di Assiria,

¶ Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent unto Hezekiah, saying, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Whereas thou hast prayed to me against Sennacherib king of Assyria:

22 q uesta è la parola che l'Eterno ha pronunciato contro di lui: La vergine, figlia di Sion, ti disprezza e si fa beffe di te la figlia di Gerusalemme scuote il capo dietro a te.

This is the word which the LORD has spoken concerning him, Has he despised thee? Has he laughed thee to scorn O virgin daughter of Zion? Has he shaken his head behind thy back O daughter of Jerusalem?

23 C hi hai insultato e oltraggiato? Contro chi hai alzato la voce e arrogantemente levato i tuoi occhi? Contro il Santo d'Israele.

Whom hast thou reproached and blasphemed? and against whom hast thou exalted thy voice and lifted up thine eyes on high? even against the Holy One of Israel.

24 P er mezzo dei tuoi servi hai insultato il Signore e hai detto: "Con la moltitudine dei miei carri sono salito in cima ai monti, nei recessi del Libano. Abbatterò i suoi cedri piú alti e i suoi cipressi piú belli; raggiungerò la sua altura piú remota, la sua foresta piú lussureggiante.

By the hand of thy slaves thou hast reproached the Lord, and hast said, By the multitude of my chariots I shall come up to the height of the mountains to the sides of Lebanon, and I will cut down the tall cedars thereof and the choice fir trees thereof; and I will enter into the height of his border and the forest of his Carmel.

25 H o scavato e bevuto acqua, con la pianta dei miei piedi ho disseccato tutti i fiumi d'Egitto

I have dug and drunk water; and with the sole of my feet shall I dry up all the rivers of sustenance.

26 N on hai forse udito che da lungo tempo ho preparato questo, da tempi antichi ne ho formato il disegno? Ora ho fatto accadere questo: che tu riducessi in cumuli di rovine città fortificate.

Hast thou not heard long ago how I have done it and of ancient times that I have formed it? Now I have brought it to pass, that thou should be to lay waste defenced cities into ruinous heaps.

27 P erciò i loro abitanti, privi di forza, erano spaventati e confusi, erano come l'erba dei campi, come l'erbetta verde, come l'erba dei tetti, che è bruciata prima che cresca.

And their inhabitants, of little strength, dismayed and confounded shall be as the grass of the field and as the green shrub as the grass on the housetops, that before it comes to maturity it is dried up.

28 M a io conosco la tua dimora, il tuo uscire e il tuo entrare e anche il tuo infuriarti contro di me.

I have understood thy state, thy going out and thy coming in, and thy rage against me.

29 P oiché ti sei infuriato contro di me e la tua insolenza è giunta ai miei orecchi, ti metterò il mio anello alle narici, il mio morso in bocca e ti farò ritornare per la strada per la quale sei venuto.

Because thy rage against me, and thy tumult, is come up into my ears, therefore I will put my hook in thy nose and my bridle in thy lips, and I will turn thee back by the way by which thou didst come.

30 E questo sarà il segno per te: quest'anno mangerete ciò che cresce spontaneamente, il secondo anno ciò che nasce dallo stesso, ma il terzo anno seminerete e mieterete, pianterete vigne e ne mangerete il frutto.

And this shall be a sign unto thee, Ye shall eat this year such as grows of itself; and the second year that which springs of the same: and in the third year ye shall sow and shall reap and shall plant vineyards and shall eat the fruit thereof.

31 E il residuo della casa di Giuda che sarà scampato continuerà a mettere radici in basso e a fare frutto in alto.

And the remnant that is escaped of the house of Judah shall again take root downward and bear fruit upward:

32 P oiché da Gerusalemme, uscirà un residuo e dal monte di Sion quelli che sono scampati. Lo zelo dell'Eterno degli eserciti farà questo».

For out of Jerusalem shall go forth a remnant and from Mount Zion shall come an escape; the zeal of the LORD of the hosts shall do this.

33 P erciò cosí dice l'Eterno contro il re di Assiria: «Egli non entrerà in questa città né vi lancerà alcuna freccia, non le verrà davanti con scudi né costruirà contro di essa alcun terrapieno.

Therefore thus saith the LORD concerning the king of Assyria, He shall not come into this city, nor shoot an arrow there, nor come before it with shields, nor cast a bank against it.

34 E gli ritornerà per la stessa strada da cui è venuto e non entrerà in questa città», dice l'Eterno.

By the way that he came, by the same shall he return and shall not come into this city, saith the LORD.

35 « Poiché io proteggerò questa città per salvarla, per amore di me stesso per amore di Davide, mio servo».

For I will defend this city to save it for my own sake and for my slave David’s sake.

36 Q uindi l'angelo dell'Eterno uscí e colpí nell'accampamento degli Assiri centottantacinquemila uomini; e quando la gente si alzò al mattino, ecco erano tutti cadaveri.

Then the angel of the LORD went forth and smote in the camp of the Assyrians a hundred and eighty-five thousand; and when they arose early in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses.

37 A llora Sennacherib, re di Assiria, levò le tende, partí e fece ritorno a casa e rimase a Ninive.

So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed and went and returned and dwelt at Nineveh.

38 E avvenne che, mentre egli stava adorando nel tempio del suo dio Nisrok, i suoi figli Adrammalek e Sharetser lo uccisero a colpi di spada; poi si rifugiarono nel paese di Ararat. Al suo posto regnò suo figlio Esarhaddon.

And it came to pass, as he was worshipping in the house of Nisroch his god, that Adrammelech and Sharezer his sons smote him with the sword; and they escaped into the land of Ararat and Esarhaddon his son reigned in his stead.
