1 A llora Elifaz di Teman rispose e disse:

¶ Then Eliphaz, the Temanite, answered and said,

2 « Se qualcuno provasse a parlarti. ti darebbe fastidio? Ma chi potrebbe trattenere le parole?

If we attempt to commune with thee, thou wilt be grieved. But who can withhold himself from speaking?

3 E cco tu ne hai ammaestrati molti e hai fortificato le mani stanche,

Behold, thou hast instructed many, and thou hast strengthened the weak hands.

4 l e tue parole hanno sorretto i vacillanti, e hai rinfrancato le ginocchia che si piegavano.

Thy words have upheld the one that was falling, and thou hast strengthened the feeble knees.

5 M a ora che il male succede a te, vieni meno; ha colpito te, e sei tutto smarrito.

But now that it is come upon thee, thou art grieved; it touches thee, and thou art troubled.

6 L a tua pietà non è forse la tua fiducia, e l'integrità della tua condotta, la tua speranza?

Is not this thy fear, thy confidence, thy hope, and the integrity of thy ways?

7 R icorda: quale innocente è mai perito, e quando mai furono distrutti gli uomini retti?

¶ Remember, I pray thee, who ever perished, being innocent? Or where were the righteous cut off?

8 C ome io stesso ho visto, quelli che arano iniquità e seminano guai, ne raccolgono i frutti.

Even as I have seen, those that plow iniquity and sow wickedness, reap the same.

9 A l soffio di Dio periscono dal vento della sua ira sono consumati.

By the breath of God they perish, and by the spirit of his anger they are consumed.

10 I l ruggito del leone la voce del leone feroce e i denti dei leoncelli sono spezzati.

The roaring of the lion and the voice of the fierce lion and the teeth of the young lions, are broken.

11 I l leone trova la morte per mancanza di preda, e i piccoli della leonessa sono dispersi.

The old lion perishes for lack of prey, and the stout lion’s whelps are scattered abroad.

12 U na parola mi è furtivamente giunta, e il mio orecchio ne ha colto il sussurro.

¶ Now the matter was also hidden from me, but my ear has perceived a little of it.

13 F ra i pensieri delle visioni notturne, quando un sonno profondo cade sui mortali,

In imaginations of visions of the night, when deep sleep falls upon men,

14 u no spavento mi prese e un fremito che fece tremare tutte le mie ossa.

fear came upon me and trembling, which made all my bones to shake.

15 U no spirito mi passò davanti e i peli del mio corpo si rizzarono.

Then a spirit passed before me which caused the hair of my flesh to stand up.

16 S i fermò, ma non potei riconoscere i suo aspetto; una figura mi stava davanti agli occhi; c'era silenzio poi udii una voce che diceva:

A ghost stood in front of me, whose face I did not recognize, and I heard it say,

17 " Può un mortale essere piú giusto di Dio? Può un uomo essere piú puro del suo Fattore

Shall mortal man be more just than God? Shall a man be more pure than his maker?

18 E cco, egli non si fida neppure dei suoi servi, e riscontra difetti persino nei suoi angeli;

Behold, he put no trust in his slaves, and his angels he charged with folly.

19 q uanto piú in quelli che abitano in case di argilla, il cui fondamento è nella polvere, e sono schiacciati come una tarma.

How much more with those that dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, who shall be crushed by the moth!

20 D alla mattina alla sera sono distrutti; periscono per sempre, senza che nessuno ci badi.

They are destroyed from morning to evening; they perish for ever without anyone regarding it.

21 L a corda della loro tenda non viene forse strappata? Essi muoiono, ma senza sapienza"».

Does their beauty perish with them? They die and do not know.
