1 U ltimate queste cose, i capi vennero da me, dicendo: «Il popolo d'Israele, i sacerdoti e i Leviti non si sono separati dai popoli di questi paesi, per quanto riguarda le abominazioni dei Cananei, degli Hittei, dei Perezei, dei Gebusei degli Ammoniti, dei Moabiti, degli Egiziani e degli Amorei.

¶ Now when these things were done, the princes came to me, saying, The people of Israel and the priests and the Levites, have not separated themselves from the peoples of the lands of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, the Ammonites, the Moabites, the Egyptians, and the Amorites, doing according to their abominations,

2 E ssi infatti hanno preso in moglie alcune delle loro figlie per sé e per i propri figli mescolando cosí la stirpe santa con i popoli di questi paesi. Purtroppo i capi e i magistrati sono stati i primi a commettere questo peccato».

for they have taken of their daughters for themselves and for their sons, and the holy seed is mingled with the peoples of the lands; and the hand of the princes and of the governors has been foremost in this trespass.

3 Q uando udii questa cosa, mi stracciai le vesti e il mantello, mi strappai i capelli della testa e della barba, e mi sedetti costernato.

And when I heard this thing, I rent my garment and my mantle and plucked off of the hair of my head and of my beard and sat down astonied.

4 A llora tutti coloro che tremavano alle parole del DIO d'Israele si radunarono presso di me a motivo del peccato di quelli ritornati dalla cattività; e io rimasi seduto e costernato fino all'oblazione della sera.

Then each one that trembled at the words of the God of Israel because of the transgression of those that had been carried away were assembled unto me; and I sat astonied until the evening sacrifice.

5 A ll'oblazione della sera mi alzai dal mio digiuno, con la veste e il mantello stracciati; poi caddi in ginocchio e stesi le mani verso l'Eterno, il mio DIO,

¶ And at the evening sacrifice I arose up from my affliction; and having rent my garment and my mantle, I fell upon my knees and spread out my hands unto the LORD my God

6 e dissi: «O mio DIO, io sono confuso e mi vergogno di alzare la mia faccia a te, o mio DIO, poiché le nostre iniquità si sono moltiplicate fin sopra il nostro capo, e la nostra colpa è giunta fino al cielo.

and said, O my God, I am confused and ashamed to lift up my face to thee, my God, for our iniquities have multiplied over our head, and our guiltiness is grown up unto heaven.

7 D ai giorni dei nostri padri fino al giorno d'oggi siamo stati grandemente colpevoli, e a motivo delle nostre iniquità noi, i nostri re e i nostri sacerdoti siamo stati dati in mano dei re delle nazioni straniere, in balìa della spada, dell'esilio, del saccheggio e dell'obbrobrio, come è al presente.

Since the days of our fathers, we have been in great guiltiness unto this day; and for our iniquities we, our kings and our priests, have been delivered into the hand of the kings of the lands, to the sword, to captivity, to spoil, and to confusion of face, as it is this day.

8 M a ora l'Eterno, il nostro DIO, ci ha fatto grazia per un breve istante, lasciandoci un residuo e dandoci un asilo nel suo santo luogo, e cosí il nostro DIO ha illuminato i nostri occhi e ci ha dato un piccolo risveglio nella nostra schiavitù.

And now as for a brief moment there has been the mercy of the LORD our God, to leave us an escape, and that we may be given a stake in his holy sanctuary that our God may illuminate our eyes and give us a little preservation of life in our bondage.

9 I nfatti noi eravamo schiavi, tuttavia il nostro DIO non ci ha abbandonati nella nostra schiavitú, ma ci ha ottenuto il favore dei re di Persia, risvegliandoci per rialzare la casa del nostro DIO, restaurandone le rovine e per darci un muro di protezione in Giuda e a Gerusalemme.

For we were slaves; yet our God did not forsake us in our bondage, but has extended mercy over us before the king of Persia, that we may be given life to lift up the house of our God and to cause the desolations thereof to be restored and to give us a wall of protection in Judah and in Jerusalem.

10 M a ora, o nostro DIO, che diremo dopo questo? Poiché abbiamo abbandonato i tuoi comandamenti,

And now, O our God, what shall we say after this? For we have forsaken thy commandments,

11 c he ci avevi ingiunto per mezzo dei tuoi servi, i profeti, dicendo: "Il paese in cui entrate per prenderne possesso è un paese impuro per l'impurità dei popoli di questi paesi, per le abominazioni con cui l'hanno riempito da un capo all'altro con le loro contaminazioni.

which thou hast commanded by thy slaves the prophets, saying, The land, unto which ye go to possess it, is an unclean land because of the uncleanness of the people of the lands, for the abominations with which they have filled it from one end to another with their uncleanness.

12 O ra dunque non date le vostre figlie ai loro figli, né prendete le loro figlie per i vostri figli; non cercate mai la loro prosperità né il loro benessere, perché cosí diventerete forti, mangerete i migliori prodotti del paese e lo lascerete in eredità ai vostri figli per sempre".

Now, therefore, do not give your daughters unto their sons, neither take their daughters unto your sons, nor seek their peace or their prosperity forever, that ye may be strengthened, and eat the good of the land and leave it for an inheritance to your sons forever.

13 M a dopo tutto quanto ci è venuto addosso a motivo delle nostre azioni malvagie e delle nostre grandi colpe, poiché tu, o DIO nostro, ci hai punito meno di quanto meritavano le nostre colpe e ci hai lasciato un residuo come questo,

And after all that is come upon us for our evil deeds and for our great guiltiness, seeing that thou our God hast intervened that we no longer be oppressed because of our iniquities and hast given us such an escape as this,

14 t orneremo noi di nuovo a violare i tuoi comandamenti e a unirci in matrimonio con i popoli che commettono queste abominazioni? Non ti adireresti contro di noi fino a distruggerci senza lasciare piú alcun residuo o superstite?

should we again break thy commandments and join in affinity with the people of these abominations? Would thou not be angry with us until thou hadst consumed us, so that there should be no remnant nor escape?

15 O Eterno, DIO d'Israele, tu sei giusto, e perciò oggi siamo rimasti noi, un residuo di scampati. Eccoci davanti a te con la nostra colpa, benché a causa di essa nessuno può reggere davanti a te!».

O LORD God of Israel, thou art righteous; for we have an escape, as it is this day, behold us here, before thee in our guiltiness; for we cannot stand before thee because of this.
