1 D eposta dunque ogni malizia ed ogni inganno, le ipocrisie, le invidie ed ogni maldicenza,

¶ Having therefore left all malice and all guile and hypocrisies and envies and all murmurings,

2 c ome bambini appena nati, desiderate ardentemente il puro latte della parola, affinché per suo mezzo cresciate,

as newborn babes, desire the rational milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby in health;

3 s e pure avete gustato che il Signore è buono.

if so be ye have tasted that the Lord is benevolent;

4 A ccostandovi a lui, come a pietra vivente, rigettata dagli uomini ma eletta e preziosa davanti a Dio,

¶ coming unto whom (is the living Stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious),

5 a nche voi, come pietre viventi, siete edificati per essere una casa spirituale, un sacerdozio santo, per offrire sacrifici spirituali, graditi a Dio per mezzo di Gesú Cristo.

ye also, as living stones, are built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, well pleasing to God by Jesus, the Christ.

6 N ella Scrittura si legge infatti: «Ecco io pongo in Sion una pietra angolare, eletta, preziosa, e chi crede in essa non sarà affatto svergognato».

Therefore, also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion the chief corner stone, chosen, precious; and he that believes on him shall not be confounded.

7 P er voi dunque che credete essa è preziosa, ma per coloro che disubbidiscono: «La pietra, che gli edificatori hanno rigettato, è divenuta la testata d'angolo, pietra d'inciampo e roccia d'intoppo che li fa cadere».

Unto you, therefore, who believe he is precious; but unto those who are disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,

8 E ssendo disubbidienti, essi inciampano nella parola, e a questo sono altresí stati destinati.

and a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense, even to those who stumble at the word, not obeying in that for which they were ordained.

9 M a voi siete una stirpe eletta, un regale sacerdozio, una gente santa, un popolo acquistato per Dio, affinché proclamiate le meraviglie di colui che vi ha chiamato dalle tenebre alla sua mirabile luce;

But ye are the chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, an acquired people, that ye should show forth the virtues of him who has called you out of darkness into his marvellous light.

10 v oi, che un tempo non eravate un popolo, ma ora siete il popolo di Dio; voi, che non avevate ottenuto misericordia, ma ora avete ottenuto misericordia.

Ye who in the time past were not a people, but are now the people of God, who in the time past had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.

11 C arissimi, io vi esorto, come stranieri e pellegrini, ad astenervi dai desideri della carne che guerreggiano contro l'anima.

Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from the carnal desires which war against the soul

12 C omportatevi bene fra i gentili affinché, là dove vi accusano di essere dei malfattori, a motivo delle buone opere che osservano in voi, possano glorificare Dio nel giorno della visitazione.

and have your honest conversation among the Gentiles, so that, in that which they murmur about you as of evildoers, having witnessed your good works, they may glorify God in the day of visitation.

13 S ottomettetevi dunque per amore del Signore ad ogni autorità costituita: sia al re come al sovrano,

¶ Therefore, be subject to every human ordinance that is of the Lord, whether it be to a king or to a superior,

14 s ia ai governatori, come mandati da lui per punire i malfattori e per lodare quelli che fanno il bene,

and unto governors as unto those that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers and for the praise of those that do well.

15 p erché questa è la volontà di Dio, che, facendo il bene, turiate la bocca all'ignoranza degli uomini stolti.

For this is the will of God, that in well doing ye may silence the ignorance of vain men,

16 C omportatevi come uomini liberi, non facendo uso della libertà come di un pretesto per coprire la malvagità, ma come servi di Dio.

as being free, yet not using your liberty to cover maliciousness, but as slaves of God.

17 O norate tutti, amate la fratellanza, temete Dio, rendete onore al re.

Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king.

18 S ervi, siate con ogni timore sottomessi ai vostri padroni, non solo ai buoni e giusti, ma anche agli ingiusti,

Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear, not only to the good and humane, but also to the unjust.

19 p erché è cosa lodevole se uno, per motivo di coscienza davanti a Dio, sopporta afflizioni soffrendo ingiustamente.

For this is due to grace, if a man for conscience toward God endures grief, suffering wrongfully.

20 C he gloria sarebbe infatti se sopportate pazientemente delle battiture, quando siete colpevoli? Ma se sopportate pazientemente delle battiture quando agite bene, questa è cosa gradita a Dio.

For what glory is it if, when ye are buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do well and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is due to grace from God.

21 A questo infatti siete stati chiamati, perché Cristo ha sofferto per noi, lasciandoci un esempio, affinché seguitate le sue orme.

Because for this were ye called: for the Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps

22 « Egli non commise alcun peccato e non fu trovato alcun inganno nella sua bocca»,

who did no sin neither was guile found in his mouth,

23 O ltraggiato, non rispondeva con oltraggi; soffrendo, non minacciava, ma si rimetteva nelle mani di colui che giudica giustamente.

who, when he was cursed, did not return the curse; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but committed himself to him that judges righteously;

24 E gli stesso portò i nostri peccati nel suo corpo sul legno della croce, affinché noi, morti al peccato, viviamo per la giustizia; e per le sue lividure siete stati guariti.

he himself bore our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness; by whose wound ye were healed.

25 E ravate infatti come pecore erranti, ma ora siete tornati al pastore e custode delle anime vostre.

For ye were as sheep that had gone astray, but are now converted unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.
