1 D opo questo Absalom si procurò un cocchio, cavalli e cinquanta uomini che corressero davanti a lui.

¶ And it came to pass after this that Absalom prepared himself chariots and horses and fifty men to run before him.

2 A bsalom si alzava al mattino presto e si metteva a lato della via che portava alla porta della città. Cosí, se qualcuno aveva una causa e andava dal re per ottenere giustizia, Absalom lo chiamava e gli diceva: «Di quale città sei?». L'altro gli rispondeva: «Il tuo servo è di tale e tale tribú d'Israele».

And Absalom rose up early and stood beside the way of the gate; and when anyone that had a controversy came to the king for judgment, then Absalom called unto them and said, Of what city art thou? And he said, Thy slave is of one of the tribes of Israel.

3 A llora Absalom gli diceva: «Vedi, le tue ragioni sono buone e giuste, ma non c'è nessuno da parte del re che ti ascolti».

And Absalom would say unto them, See, thy matters are good and just; but there is no one delegated by the king to hear thee.

4 P oi Absalom aggiungeva: «Se facessero me giudice del paese, chiunque avesse un processo o una causa verrebbe da me, e io gli farei giustizia».

And Absalom would say, Oh, that I were made judge in the land, that everyone who has any suit or cause might come unto me, and I would do him justice!

5 Q uando poi qualcuno si avvicinava per prostrarsi davanti a lui egli stendeva la mano, lo prendeva e lo baciava.

And it was so, that when anyone came near unto him to do him obeisance, he put forth his hand and took him and kissed him.

6 A bsalom faceva cosí con tutti quelli d'Israele che venivano dal re per chiedere giustizia; in questo modo Absalom si cattivò il cuore della gente d'Israele.

And Absalom did according to this manner with all Israel that came to the king for judgment; so Absalom stole the hearts of those of Israel.

7 O r avvenne che, dopo quattro anni, Absalom disse al re: «Ti prego lasciami andare ad Hebron ad adempiere un voto che ho fatto all'Eterno.

¶ And at the end of a predetermined period of forty years, it came to pass that Absalom said unto the king, I pray thee, let me go to Hebron and pay my vow, which I have vowed unto the LORD.

8 P oiché, durante la sua permanenza a Gheshur in Siria, il tuo servo ha fatto un voto, dicendo: "Se l'Eterno mi riconduce a Gerusalemme, io servirò l'Eterno!"».

For thy slave vowed a vow while I abode at Geshur in Syria, saying, If the LORD shall bring me again indeed to Jerusalem, then I will serve the LORD.

9 I l re gli disse: «Va' in pace!». Allora egli si levò e andò a Hebron.

And the king said unto him, Go in peace. So he arose and went to Hebron.

10 P oi Absalom mandò degli emissari per tutte le tribú d'Israele, a dire: «Quando sentirete il suono della tromba, direte: "Absalom è proclamato re a Hebron"».

But Absalom sent spies throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, As soon as ye hear the sound of the shofar, then ye shall say, Absalom reigns in Hebron.

11 C on Absalom partirono da Gerusalemme duecento uomini, come invitati; essi andarono innocentemente, senza sapere nulla.

And two hundred men of Jerusalem went with Absalom, that were invited by him, and they went in their integrity, without knowing anything.

12 A bsalom, mentre offriva i sacrifici, mandò a chiamare dalla sua città di Ghiloh Ahithofel, il Ghilonita, consigliere di Davide. Cosí la congiura acquistava forza perché il popolo andava crescendo di numero intorno ad Absalom.

Absalom also sent for Ahithophel, the Gilonite, of David’s counsel, from his city, even from Giloh, while he offered sacrifices. And the conspiracy was strong, for the people increased continually with Absalom.

13 A rrivò quindi da Davide un messaggero a dire: «Il cuore degli uomini d'Israele segue Absalom».

¶ And the word came to David, saying, The hearts of the men of Israel are after Absalom.

14 A llora Davide disse a tutti i suoi servi che erano con lui a Gerusalemme: «Levatevi e fuggiamo; altrimenti nessuno di noi scamperà dalle mani di Absalom. Affrettatevi a partire affinché non ci sorprenda improvvisamente e faccia cadere su di noi la rovina, e non colpisca la città passandola a fil di spada».

Then David said unto all his slaves that were with him at Jerusalem, Arise, and let us flee, for we shall not otherwise escape from Absalom; make speed to depart lest he overtake us suddenly and bring evil upon us and smite the city with the edge of the sword.

15 I servi del re gli dissero: «Ecco i tuoi servi sono pronti a fare tutto ciò che piacerà al re, nostro signore».

And the king’s slaves said unto the king, Behold, thy slaves are ready to do whatever my lord the king shall choose.

16 I l re dunque partí, seguito da tutta la sua casa, ma lasciò dieci concubine a custodire, il palazzo.

And the king went forth and all his household after him. And the king left ten women, who were concubines, to keep the house.

17 I l re partí, seguito da tutto il popolo, e si fermarono all'ultima casa.

And the king went forth and all the people after him and stopped in a place that was far off.

18 T utti i servi del re passavano davanti, accanto a lui, tutti i Kerethei, tutti i Pelethei, e tutti i Ghittei, che l'avevano seguito da Gath in numero di seicento, camminavano davanti al re.

And all his slaves passed to his side, and all the Cherethites and all the Pelethites and all the Gittites, six hundred men who had come on foot with him from Gath, went before the king.

19 A llora il re disse a Ittai di Gath «Perché vieni anche tu con noi? Torna indietro e rimani col re, perché sei un forestiero per di piú un esule dalla tua patria.

Then the king said to Ittai, the Gittite, Why dost thou also go with us? Return to thy place and abide with the king; for thou art a stranger and also an exile.

20 T u sei arrivato solo ieri e oggi dovrei farti vagare con noi, quando io stesso non so dove vado? Torna indietro e riconduci con te i tuoi fratelli in benignità e fedeltà».

Whereas thou didst come but yesterday, should I this day make thee go up and down with us? Seeing I go where I go, return thou and take back thy brethren; mercy and truth are in thee.

21 M a Ittai rispose al re dicendo: «Com'è vero che l'Eterno vive e che vive il re mio signore, in qualunque luogo sarà il re mio signore per morire o per vivere, là sarà anche il tuo servo».

And Ittai answered the king and said, As the LORD lives and as my lord the king lives, for life or for death, wherever my lord the king shall be, there also will thy slave be.

22 A llora Davide disse a Ittai: «Va'avanti e prosegui». Cosí Ittai il Ghitteo passò oltre con tutta la sua gente e con tutti i fanciulli che erano con lui.

Then David said to Ittai, Go, therefore, and pass. And Ittai, the Gittite, passed and all his men and all the little ones that were with him.

23 T utti quelli del paese piangevano ad alta voce, mentre tutto il popolo passava. Il re passò il torrente Kidron e tutto il popolo passò in direzione del deserto.

And all those of the land wept with a loud voice, and all the people passed the brook Kidron; and then the king also passed, and all the people passed unto the way of the wilderness.

24 E d ecco venire anche Tsadok con tutti i Leviti, i quali portavano l'arca del patto di DIO. Essi deposero l'arca di DIO e Abiathar offrí sacrifici, finché tutto il popolo finí di uscir dalla città.

¶ And behold Zadok also and with him all the Levites who bore the ark of the covenant of God, and they set down the ark of God. And Abiathar went up after all the people had finished leaving the city.

25 P oi il re disse a Tsadok: «Riporta in città l'arca di DIO! Se io trovo grazia agli occhi dell'Eterno, egli mi farà tornare e me la farà rivedere insieme con la sua dimora.

But the king said unto Zadok, Carry back the ark of God into the city; if I shall find grace in the eyes of the LORD, he will bring me again and show me both it and his tabernacle.

26 M a se dice: "Non ti gradisco", eccomi, faccia di me ciò che gli pare».

But if he should say, I have no delight in thee; behold, here I am, let him do to me as seems good unto him.

27 I l re disse ancora al sacerdote Tsadok: «Non sei tu il veggente? Torna in pace in città con i due vostri figli: Ahimaats, tuo figlio e Gionathan, figlio di Abiathar.

The king said also unto Zadok, the priest, Art not thou a seer? Return into the city in peace and your two sons with you, Ahimaaz, thy son, and Jonathan, the son of Abiathar.

28 V edete, io aspetterò nelle pianure del deserto, finché non mi giunga da parte vostra qualche parola per avvertirmi».

See, I will tarry in the plain of the wilderness until you send word to me.

29 C osí Tsadok e Abiathar riportarono a Gerusalemme l'arca di DIO e là rimasero.

Then Zadok and Abiathar carried the ark of God again to Jerusalem, and they remained there.

30 D avide saliva il pendio del monte degli Ulivi e, salendo, piangeva; camminava col capo coperto e a piedi scalzi. E tutta la gente che era con lui aveva il capo coperto e, salendo, piangeva.

And David went up by the ascent of Mount Olivet and wept as he went up and had his head covered, and he went barefoot. And all the people that were with him covered each one his head, and they went up, weeping as they went up.

31 Q ualcuno venne a dire a Davide: «Ahithofel è con Absalom tra i congiurati». Davide disse: «O Eterno, ti prego rendi vani i consigli di Ahithofel!».

¶ And it was told David, saying, Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom. Then David said, O LORD, I pray thee, turn the counsel of Ahithophel into folly.

32 Q uando Davide giunse in vetta al monte, dove adorò DIO, ecco farglisi incontro Hushai, l'Arkita con la veste stracciata e il capo coperto di terra.

And it came to pass that when David came to the top of the mount to worship God there, behold, Hushai, the Archite came to meet him, with his coat rent and earth upon his head,

33 D avide gli disse: «Se tu prosegui con me, mi sarai di peso;

Unto whom David said, If thou pass on with me, then thou shalt be a burden unto me;

34 m a se torni in città e dici ad Absalom: "lo sarò tuo servo, o re; come fui servo di tuo padre nel passato, cosí sarò ora tuo servo", tu renderai vano in mio favore il consiglio di Ahithofel.

but if thou return to the city and say unto Absalom, I will be thy slave, O king as I have been thy father’s slave until now, so will I now also be thy slave; then thou may defeat the counsel of Ahithophel for me.

35 N on avrai là con te i sacerdoti Tsadok ed Abiathar? Tutto ciò che sentirai dire da parte della casa del re lo farai sapere ai sacerdoti Tsadok ed Abiathar.

Are not Zadok and Abiathar, the priests, there with thee? Therefore, it shall be that whatever thou shalt hear out of the king’s house, thou shalt tell it to Zadok and Abiathar, the priests.

36 E cco, essi hanno là con sé i loro due figli, Ahimaats figlio di Tsadok e Gionathan figlio di Abiathar; per mezzo di loro mi farete sapere tutto ciò che sentirete»

Behold, they have there with them their two sons, Ahimaaz, Zadok’s son, and Jonathan, Abiathar’s son; and by them you shall send unto me everything that you hear.

37 C osí Hushai amico di Davide, tornò in città e Absalom entrò in Gerusalemme.

So Hushai, David’s special companion came into the city, and Absalom came into Jerusalem.
