1 T utti i capi delle forze, Johanan, figlio di Kareah, Jezaniah figlio di Hoshaiah e tutto il popolo, dal piú piccolo al piú grande, si avvicinarono

¶ Then all the princes of the armies, and Johanan the son of Kareah, and Jezaniah the son of Hoshaiah, and all the people from the least even unto the greatest, came near,

2 e dissero al profeta Geremia: «Deh, giunga la nostra supplica davanti a te e prega l'Eterno, il tuo DIO per noi, per tutto questo residuo (perché di molti che eravamo siamo rimasti in pochi, come ti rendi conto con i tuoi stessi occhi),

and said unto Jeremiah the prophet, Let, we beseech thee, our supplication be accepted before thee, and pray for us unto the LORD thy God, even for all this remnant (for we are left but a few of many, as thine eyes do behold us)

3 a ffinché l'Eterno, il tuo DIO, ci mostri la strada per la quale dobbiamo camminare e ciò che dobbiamo fare».

that the LORD thy God may show us the way in which we walk, and that which we should do.

4 I l profeta Geremia disse loro: «Ho capito! Ecco, pregherò l'Eterno, il vostro DIO, secondo le vostre parole e vi farò sapere tutto ciò che l'Eterno vi risponderà; non vi nasconderò nulla».

Then Jeremiah the prophet said unto them, I have heard you; behold, I will pray unto the LORD your God according to your words; and it shall come to pass, that whatever thing the LORD shall answer you, I will declare it unto you; I will keep nothing back from you.

5 E ssi allora dissero a Geremia: «L'Eterno sia un testimone verace e fedele contro di noi, se non faremo secondo ogni parola che l'Eterno, il tuo DIO ci manderà a dire per tuo mezzo.

Then they said to Jeremiah, The LORD be a true and faithful witness between us, if we do not even according to all things for the which the LORD thy God shall send thee to us.

6 S ia la sua risposta gradita o sgradita, noi ubbidiremo alla voce dell'Eterno, il nostro DIO, al quale ti mandiamo, affinché ce ne venga bene nell'ubbidire alla voce dell'Eterno, il nostro DIO».

Whether it be good, or whether it be evil, we will hear the voice of the LORD our God, to whom we send thee; that, obeying the voice of the LORD our God, it may be well with us.

7 D opo dieci giorni avvenne che la parola dell'Eterno fu rivolta a Geremia.

¶ And it came to pass after ten days, that the word of the LORD came unto Jeremiah.

8 E gli allora chiamò Johanan, figlio di Kareah, tutti i capi delle forze che erano con lui e tutto il popolo, dal piú piccolo al piú grande,

Then he called Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the princes of the armies which were with him, and all the people from the least even to the greatest,

9 e disse loro: «Cosí dice l'Eterno, il DIO d'Israele, al quale mi avete mandato perché gli presentassi la vostra supplica:

and said unto them, Thus hath the LORD, the God of Israel said, unto whom ye sent me to present your supplication before him,

10 " Se continuate a rimanere in questo paese, io vi stabilirò e non vi distruggerò, vi pianterò e non vi sradicherò, perché mi pento della calamità che ho fatto venire su di voi.

If ye will still abide in this land, then I will build you, and not pull you down, and I will plant you, and not pluck you up; for I repent of the evil that I have done unto you.

11 N on temete il re di Babilonia, di cui avete paura; non temetelo dice l'Eterno, perché io sono con voi per salvarvi e per liberarvi dalla sua mano.

Do not be afraid of the king of Babylon, of whom ye are afraid; do not be afraid of him, said the LORD: for I am with you to save you and to deliver you from his hand.

12 I o vi userò misericordia, affinché egli vi usi misericordia e vi faccia ritornare nel vostro paese

And I will show mercies unto you, that he may have mercy upon you and cause you to dwell in your own land.

13 M a se, disubbidendo alla voce dell'Eterno, il vostro DIO, voi dite: "Non vogliamo rimanere in questo paese"

But if ye say, We will not dwell in this land, not listening to the voice of the LORD your God,

14 e dite: "No, vogliamo andare nel paese d'Egitto, dove non vedremo la guerra né udremo squillo di tromba né soffriremo piú fame di pane, e là dimoreremo",

saying, No, but we will go into the land of Egypt, where we shall see no war, nor hear the sound of the shofar, nor have hunger of bread; and there we will dwell:

15 e bbene, ascolta allora la parola dell'Eterno, o residuo di Giuda! Cosí dice l'Eterno degli eserciti, il DIO d'Israele: "Se avete veramente deciso di andare in Egitto e vi andate per stabilirvi,

and now therefore hear the word of the LORD, ye remnant of Judah; thus hath the LORD of the hosts, the God of Israel said: If ye altogether set your faces to enter into Egypt, and go to sojourn there;

16 l a spada che temete vi raggiungerà là, nel paese d'Egitto, e la fame di cui avevate paura vi si attaccherà addosso là in Egitto e là morirete.

then it shall come to pass that the sword, which ye feared, shall overtake you there in the land of Egypt, and the famine, of which ye were afraid, shall follow close after you there in Egypt; and there ye shall die.

17 A vverrà dunque che tutti quelli che hanno deciso di andare in Egitto per dimorarvi moriranno di spada, di fame o di peste. Nessuno di loro scamperà o sfuggirà alla sventura che io farò venire su di loro".

So shall it be with all the men that set their faces to go into Egypt to sojourn there; they shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence; and none of them shall remain or escape from the evil that I will bring upon them.

18 P oiché cosí dice l'Eterno degli eserciti, il DIO d'Israele: "Come la mia ira e il mio furore si sono riversati sugli abitanti di Gerusalemme, cosí il mio furore si riverserà su di voi, quando entrerete in Egitto, e voi diventerete un oggetto di esecrazione, di stupore, di maledizione e di obbrobrio e non vedrete piú questo luogo".

For thus hath the LORD of the hosts, the God of Israel said: As my anger and my fury have been poured forth upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so shall my fury be poured forth upon you when ye shall enter into Egypt, and ye shall be an execration and an astonishment and a curse and a reproach; and ye shall see this place no more.

19 O residuo di Giuda, l'Eterno vi dice: "Non andate in Egitto!" Sappiate bene che oggi vi ho solennemente avvertiti.

The LORD hath said concerning you, O ye remnant of Judah. Do not go into Egypt; know certainly that I have admonished you this day.

20 V oi avete usato inganno contro voi stessi, quando mi avete mandato dall'Eterno, il vostro DIO, dicendo: "Prega per noi l'Eterno, il nostro DIO, e tutto ciò che dirà l'Eterno, il nostro DIO, fallo sapere a noi fedelmente, e noi lo faremo".

Why did ye cause your souls to err? For ye sent me unto the LORD your God, saying, Pray for us unto the LORD our God; and according unto all that the LORD our God shall say, so declare unto us, and we will do it.

21 I o ve l'ho fatto sapere oggi, ma voi non ubbidite alla voce dell'Eterno, il vostro DIO, né a nulla di ciò che vi ha mandato a dire per mezzo di me.

And now I have this day declared it to you, but ye have not obeyed the voice of the LORD your God, nor any thing for which he has sent me unto you.

22 O r dunque sappiate bene che voi morirete di spada, di fame e di peste, nel luogo in cui desiderate andare a dimorare».

Now therefore know certainly that ye shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence, in the place where ye desire to go and to sojourn.
